The streets in Cedar Rapids, Iowa - all 400 blocks of them - were filled with floodwaters and other strange sights: floating Dumpsters and utility poles and sandbags piled in vain.
The cresting Cedar River wreaked widespread havoc Friday on Iowa's second-largest city, forcing the evacuation of 3,000 homes and a downtown hospital while collapsing a railroad bridge.

Obamas fault.
Where’s the looting? Did Cedar Rapids tell it’s police force to go to Vegas to de-stress?
Best news since O.J. was acquitted!
Looks to me (from what little coverage this has received) that folks are volunteering and coping with disaster.
We can’t have the good part of American spirit broadcast by the media, now can we?
I’ve got lots of standing water all around me here in Southern Wisconsin, and my boss who lives north of me has people being evacuated from her flooded town.
We were both joking at work today (Yes, we WORK on WEEKENDS) that we’re going to spend our FEMA credit cards on ‘Cabana Boys and Margaritas’ at the local pub. I mean, in a crisis, a Girl has to do what a Girl has to do! :)
It truly IS a mess, but trust me, you’re not going to hear anything but “pulling themselves up by the bootstraps and getting ON with it” stories from THIS neck of the woods. You might hear SOME whining from Milwaukee County, but that’s because a lot of NOLA “survivors” have settled there due to our largess!
We’re in ‘Flyover Country.’ Those of us “in the middle” are a bunch of dumb@sses according to either coast, and the Socialist South. *Rolleyes*
Government? Don’t need it. Don’t want it. Now, get off my land and let me finish sopping up the water! And I just CLEANED that floor! Take yer d@mn boots off at the door, Moron! ;)
Unless you watch the Weather Channel or have access to the local stations, you’re not going to see what they are calling a 500 year flood of epic proportions. People are now at risk of losing their water supply there and they had additional torrential rainfall all morning today. Iowa City has similar problems as well as Des Moines and parts of Interstate 80 are closed. It’s beyond belief. Then there’s the flooding in the Quad Cities (Il and Ia) and the Rock River is also rising now.
One would think what with all the flimflam Obama created in Iowa that he’d have some message for these folks but I guess he’s just too busy.
Just typical white folks being flooded this time.
Gone from the sidebar. Guess it’s not even worthy here.
Remember the hysteria from the MSM during New Orleans. They ignored where the hurricane actually hit.
Not a peep outta them for this when a larger area and more people are impacted. Guess they can’t blame Bush for this one and there’s no looters they can praise for their bravery.
We Iowans can handle any natural disaster, the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors remains strong. I don’t know if we’ll survive an Obama Presidency. We’re already taxed to the breaking point, thanks to Senator Tom Harkin and the like.
Can somebody put farmer overalls on Looter Guy and corn in his plastic tub?
Bless you all! I know all the folks in flyover country are pretty tough (you have to be to live here) but still this flood is something for the record books. Wish there was more information on the news, but so far just two minute sound bites at the most.

But our troubles pale when compared to what the folks in Cedar Rapids and smaller towns in the area whose names didn't make the news. What a shame.
Our town may not survive this. This is our second devastating flood in ten months. I wonder what many of the other small communities who were hit worse will do.
If it wasn’t an election year, it would get a lot of coverage.
It does in the morning cable news shows, but once 2 hits, it is all politics all the time except for some brief mentions on CNN, Fox, and MSNBC.
My best thoughts go out to you and everyone affected by this tragedy. I will pray for the best.
You can’t keep good folks down. And from my little corner of the world, you have my respect.
Stay safe.
(Diana In Wi...your sense of humor will guard you from harm..no doubt about it!)
FR puts NOTHING on the breaking news thread anymore......ridiculous.
It takes a week to even get through 3 things. There was something very worthy of breaking news the other day and it was removed and put somewhere else.
Basically, anything that has nothing to do with politics no longer is considered important on FR anymore.
Can we say that Black Iowans are coping with their flooding better than New Orleans Blacks?
It would be best to let Cedar Rapids remain flooded and not spend a tax payer dime on recovery.
I am sure the people of Cedar Rapids can find some other place in the country to live now that their city is destroyed.
It’s not below sea level that’s why.
Just to be safe, John McCain should visit Iowa and call again for Fed relief.
He'd be a day late and a dollar short, as our own two members of the House of Lords have already been chauffeured over the area by airplane. Even this much water is able to support the feet of only so many sitting senators at a given time.
Mr. niteowl77
The best breakfast I ever had in my life was in Iowa at a little place off the interstate.
Best wishes to everyone in the area.
Diana, I’m terribly sorry to see what is happening up there in your neck of the woods. Believe it or not, there are many of us here in New Orleans who are praying for you, as we know how you feel. I don’t normally respond on the NOLA bashing threads cause I like it here and don’t want to get Zotted!! Haha. but I know that you folks have a tough road ahead of you. You are very lucky that your water has started to receed already and your clean up only requires a mop. I saw some homes with water to the rafters and i know the work ahead for those folks all too well. Not too mention the heartbreak of seeing your home and everything in it in ruins. I know it’s just stuff, but it’s YOUR stuff, and your grandma’s stuff, and it hurts. By the way, many of us did pull ourselves up by the boot straps and continue to do so, there are many fine men and women on the NOPD who did stay, sacrifice, and rescue, and did not steal, and some of you may need those government margaritas when it’s all done. God bless. My thoughts and prayers to my neighbors at the top of the Mississippi.
Paging Roscoe.
Diana, your in my prayers. Keep us updated on how you are doing. Blessings and strength for you and your family.
According to an article linked on Drudge, they are in the process of a “last effort” to save the University of Iowa in Iowa City! My son just left there a few short weeks ago. The horror of all of this is just unimaginable and not a peep from the strong Midwesterners. Bless those having to deal with it all.
I’ve been following this situation pretty closely lately... but, I have found it very strange that the MSM is not putting more attention into this story.
It has been Tim Russert ALL day long. Enough already!
you’re kidding, right?
I was thinking the same exact thing. No disrespect to him (God bless his soul), but there are alot of other very pressing issues that need media attention, such as this. It really makes me wonder about their priorities.
I live in San Diego and have never been to the Midwest but I have been on that local link I left on the above post of mine for some time now. The City of Cedar Rapids has a lot of history and some beautiful historical buildings and some very fine people live there. It is all very sad to me!!
“We Iowans can handle any natural disaster, the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors remains strong.”
We went to sign up to throw sandbags here in Des Moines today.
The line of volunteers was out the door.
So many people signed up, that most of us were not even called to help.
I read the news article from which Drudge got that quote. The entire University is NOT going under water. 12 buildings are in danger, included the Union and Hancher.
Sandbagging was discontinued late this afternoon due to a severe thunderstorm, but they will be back at it tomorrow morning at 8
“According to an article linked on Drudge, they are in the process of a last effort to save the University of Iowa in Iowa City!”
The devastation in eastern Iowa is very understated. The areas affected are not areas that flood every year either.
The crop damage (corn and soybeans) will be large; grain prices have already reflected this.
Get ready to spend much more on dairy products, beef, pork, chicken, and eggs.
“12 buildings are in danger, included the Union and Hancher.”
19 buildings on campus with major damage. And the water is rising.
From someone that has not received any Federal money for Katrina damages and whose home was a complete loss please quit comparing apples and oranges. I have been flooded twice in my life, one time like you, water went up water went down. THis is a big difference from the water goes up and stays there for a month.
I’m very sorry for your trouble but quit trying to consider yourself superior to those you know nothing about. The stories you read are from the MSM...so take them with a grain of salt and look at who is complaining. Most of the big complainers are from outside of NO, except for oour feelings about the Corp. who we are forced to put up with because of Federal laws and regardless of how much you hear about levee boards the Corp. has complete control of construction and design.
Personally I would like to have some of your Farm subsidies and be able to live in a nice small town. Well everyone has their cross to bear, especially with your Senate delagation.
I hope FEMA comes and helps you so you will know how much help they really are. When they come expect any real progress to come to a swift halt.
Best of luck and stay dry. I really like your states cheese.
They’ve already abandoned several, including an arts building. Most of the older buildings are up a rise from the river, but a lot of the newer ones are on what was thought to be the former (thanks to a flood-control dam up river in Coralville) floodplain.
Sadly, I know just what you meant by that sentence. Is that a sign of being an internet veteran ? :P
"Im very sorry for your trouble but quit trying to consider yourself superior to those you know nothing about."
Hear, hear.
Thank you for that correction.
DM RedStar still saying it’s 12.
Thanks again, for the correction.
The 19 came straight from Gov Chester over WHO, as I posted.
whatever the number, it is still going to be a massive recovery.
And that is total B.S. I don’t read much here anymore because I need something to feed my spirit once in awhile—like fellow freepers who are in need due to floods, for example. I’m already sick to death of politics and the angry freepers who fire up those threads.
