Societies have a way of designating certain groups of people as "problematic" and then scapegoating them - as a class of people, without regard for individual distinctions within the designated group - as the source of the major problems that society faces. Most countries have done it at one time or another in their history. We've done it here in the United States.
Reading through reader responses throughout the online world of HoustonBelief.com, the larger chron.com site, and other major news sources in the country, I wonder if we aren't participating yet again in one of the oldest mechanisms in human social dynamics - group scapegoating. From the comments, three groups emerge as chiefly responsible for the central problems facing US society, and those whom we should fear the most: Muslims, homosexuals and immigrants.
Apparently, all Muslims (whether in the US or abroad) are outright terrorists, or are supportive of terrorist activity. They all hate the US and plan to take over the country and submit the entire population to sharia law. They have no respect for human rights, especially for women, and soon they will all declare armed jihad on non-Muslim US citizens.
Sorry for the use of profanity.
This is professional journalism? I wouldn’t use this paper to line a bird cage.
Boy, are these two broads out of touch with reality.
Sorry for the use of political incorrectness.
Some groups should be “demonized.” Notably racists, Nazis, Communists and Islamists.
The idea that all “demonizing” of groups is wrong is every bit as idiotic as the idea that it is always right. The argument should be about whether stigmatizing a group as evil is appropriate in the particular case. Then individuals can choose whether to align themselves with that group. If they do, they should be demonized.
Nazis, Commies, racists and Islamists are by definition evil. I hereby officially demonize them.
Dang, that felt good!
BTW, did you notice how the authors classify opposition to illegal immigration as being “anti-immigrant?”
All wrong. The problem is the ‘Left.’ All the other catagories are subsets of the presenting problem.
One characteristic of leftists is dishonesty...
Ayup.
Talk about a ‘strawman’ argument. This takes the cake.
How come it took 2 of these stupid broads to write this piece of drivel. I want to offially demonize stupid people who think that they are capable of a rational thought but are obviously not.

“I want to offially demonize stupid people who think that they are capable of a rational thought but are obviously not.”....... and write down their dillusional musings.
By demonizing Americans as being anti-gay, anti-Muslim, and anti-”immigrant” is this guy suggesting a need for an assault on free speech in the form of additional “hate crime” legislation? This has already been done explicitly in press coverage of the Canadian “Human Rights Tribunals”.
