No Drilling. No New Refineries. Get a Horse!
Canada Free Press ^ | June 13, 2008 | Alan Caruba

Posted on 06/14/2008 7:00:23 PM PDT by Delacon

I keep wondering how long it will take Americans to connect the dots and figure out why the most powerful economy the world has ever seen cannot manage to drill for oil in its own backyard and then get it refined nearby.

The news on June 10, if anyone was paying attention, was about the way the Natural Resources Defense Council and other environmental groups were able to thwart the plans of ConocoPhillips to expand its refinery in Roxana, Illinois. An appeal to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was upheld because, said the EPA, its air permit, previously granted, just did not meet all the excruciating requirements involved.

For the record, ConocoPhillips was and is prepared to invest an estimated $1 billion to add a second coker, otherwise known as a crude oil processor. The company wants to expand in order to process Canadian tar sands oil. These days it refines approximately 306,000 barrels of oil per day to produce gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, asphalt and other products.”

This explains in part why ExxonMobil has just announced it will sell off its gas stations because the real money is made “upstream” as they say in the oil industry. The profits from the “downstream”, in this case at the pump, are so small as to be a drag on earnings.

All those members of Congress that want to punish the oil companies for making a profit should check the balance sheet. From 2003 to 2007, ExxonMobil paid taxes (in all forms) in the amount of $64.7 billion. This actually exceeded its U.S. earnings by more than $19 billion! You do the math. Exploration, discovery, and drilling are where the money is. Wisely, this company has...

"According to the Sierra Club, “climate change is decimating many species” and pushing Congress to pass the Global Warming Wildlife Survival Act. Another name for it might as well be the “Do Not Drill for Oil, Mine for Coal, and Build a Pipeline for Natural Gas Act.” The world is not running out of polar bears, but Americans who have to pay $4 plus for a gallon of gasoline are beginning—at last—to run out of patience."

The Global Warming Wildlife Survival Act is something I'll be keeping my eye on.

This “act” is NOT about “wildlife survival.” It is about the destruction of capitalism and the United States. Get ready America! We’re about to become a third world banana republic. Ever swept the floor in a dirt hut?

I defy the liberals to come for my bicycle! They will take my means of transportation from my cold, dead hands. I don't need a refinery to go where I want.

I’m thinking McCain will come to this. Obama simply can not. It will be the most important issue of this campaign. He is such a stuck in the mud, its just a question of when. The sooner the better. We have to turn up the heat. Independents will vote for him on this. Cons like me, will hold their nose and go out and vote for him on this. He might even pick up over half the Hilary voters on this. He has to know this. Keep up the cap and trade crap, keep saying no drilling in ANWR and he loses. A majority of the people have no high regard for either candidate. McCain jumps on this issue and he wins.

McCain might win but he’s not for drilling here or drilling now and he regularly trashes the oil companies.

“Americans who have to pay $4 plus for a gallon of gasoline are beginning—at last—to run out of patience.” ....................................Our economy is based on the combustion engine and the automobile. Keep them going and our economy prospers. My money is on the Asians (China, Japan, Korea and India) to develop a new type of engine that does not rely on petro chemicals. It may be electric, compressed air, hydrogen or something else but you can bet they’ll come up with something before we do at this rate. The key is cheap fuel for the automobile and everyone will be happy.

I think most agree that the next power source for portable fuel will be the fuel cell. It can be powered by hydrogen, methanol, and ethanol. The transition will hurt. To ease the transition, FFVs are a good way to go.

......but we are still going to need oil in the meantime. This is what the dumbasses in Washington just do not understand. They say it will take 10 years (God, I am so tired of hearing this as an excuse!) to get new oil on-line. I just do not believe it.

It hasn't taken 10 years to get any other field on-line. Unless the dimturds in Washington are planning to add even more idiotic “rules” for oil companies to follow, I think it can be done much faster.

Please do a little research about fuel cells.

No Drilling. No New Refineries. Get a Horse!

If the envirowackos ever get their wish and we're all on horseback, they'll have a big shock coming.

I was reading a book by a guy who worked his way across America in 1891-92 as a social experiment, and he mentioned that when he was in Chicago, the sidewalks and streets were slimy from the horse manure that was everywhere. He didn't mention smell, but it must have been horrific in the summertime.

As a kid in New York in the 1940s, I well remember the street cleaners sweeping up "horse apples" and it was pretty pungent even then, although there weren't near as many horses then.

That, and the fact that he mentioned that a lot of acreage went into growing hay just for the horses/cattle.

Welcome to the Third World indeed.

Don’t worry about WHY, just do what you can to cause confusion and consternation in their ranks. All government agencies take orders from the greenies, it’s been going on for decades.

My fights with the greenies has been going on since the 70s, this brand of socialism is not new, actually it has become Communism with a “friendly” face.

I used to attend meetings of the SC in nearby large city and cause cat fights and arguments by posing a few FACTS. I was also pro-hunting and fishing, man did that stir ‘em up. Rant away. Aside from that, portable fuel is the biggest problem with regards our energy needs. We can transition to non carbon based energy for everything else eventually relatively painlessly. Nuke, solar, wind etc. Hell, I dont give a damn what powers my refrigerator other than that the bill I get for it is the cheapest out there. Go 100% nuke for all I care. But thats about non portable fuel. I read a lot and I am convinced that nothing will ever again do the job as cheaply as a portable fuel as gasoline does. Never, never, never. At some point, gasoline though, as a portable fuel will become more expensive than alternatives. Those alternatives will be poured into fuel cells and not some internal combustion engine or some battery. The world will run on motors not engines eventually. Rant on.

General Motors and Shell Oil have a joint partnership for an automobile that runs on a hydrogen fuel cell.

The car will be on the market in about 3 - 5 years from now. There are 20 prototypes currently in existence;
Glenn Beck has test driven one of these vehicles for a week, and he loved it.

They're already bitching about cattle. How do you think they are going to respond to all of us taking to horseback? How are cities, who prohibit livestock in the city limits, going to respond to backyard stables?

It will be interesting. The greenies are going have a very rude awakening. Their “Brave New World” may require a great deal of bravery-—a lot more than they possess.

The point is that the fuel cell is a conversion device. Our personal transportation need for energy is dwarfed by our industrial needs and solar and wind isn't going to cut it for the foreseeable future, if ever. The fuels you mentioned all require tremendous amounts of energy to be processed to a state usable by a fuel cell conversion device. Our Congress is making it impossible to make the transition you seem to desire (no nuclear, no drilling, no coal). They are artificially limiting the supply there by driving up the price of energy across the board. This has been the goal of the Democrats for at least 20 years.

Why, I don't know? Most of these butts were fans of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge back in the 70's. Maybe they want us to be an agrarian society again.

I didn’t say the conversion would happen overnight.

My guess is that it would take a couple of decades for there to be a significant number of these vehicles on the road once they’re introduced.

Glenn Beck mentioned that a fuel cell would cost about $2.00. I have no idea how many miles a vehicle could travel for $2.00, but obviously Shell Oil intends to produce the fuel cells necessary to power these vehicles.

In the meantime, we should drill, drill, drill in America, and build new refineries and nuclear power plants. Oil and gasoline is going out of style anytime soon.

The old Nazi horse

A true story of Caipirabob's brother's experiences:

My brother got equestrian training and recently told me a story about "The old Nazi horse".

He and a buddy saw an ad in the paper for a "free horse". He had wanted to buy a horse but decided it wasn't worth it. When he saw the "free horse", he had to see what it was about.

So he went to a place out in the countryside. He met the owner, let's call him "Klaus" because I can't remember the name he told me. "Klaus" was in his late 70's/early 80's and couldn't ride horses any more. Especially this one. He said it was tempermental.

So my bro goes out to see the horse and how it behaved. Klaus said if he cared for the horse, it was his to do with as he pleased. The horse could stay in the stable, but my bro had to provide all of the necessities for maintenance.

Over the next few days my bro did his best. Feeding the horse high quality foods, cleaning and grooming and all that stuff. The horse didn't respond. In fact, it tried to bite him frequently. When he rode it, the horse would respond inconsistently to commands and one time dropped it's head to throw him. When my bro tried to "de-gunk" it's hooves, the darn thing relaxed his foot, then planted it firmly on my bro's backside and sent him across the room. My bro had always been lucky and worked with "sweet and loving" horses, but this one? The old nazi horse was impossible...

So one day my bro is about to out riding and Klaus walks up to him with a crop. The old Nazi tells my bro "Yoo schudt vreally vride vit a krrop."

My bro told him "I never really use a crop, I've always worked without one."

Klaus responded "Hokay, itz your bodee..."

He watched my bro put the saddle on the horse and double check to make sure the horse wasn't hold it's breath. My bro was pretty convinced at this point when Klaus interupted.

"No, no no...you must vatch..." So Klaus took the "krrop" and swacked the horse as hard as my bro had ever seen a horse hit. The horse exhaled, big time and the saddle slid slightly over to one side. My bro was pissed.

"Mo!@#!$%&*#@W!"

"Zee? You schudt vride vit a krrop!"

My bro was pretty much over it by then. The old Nazi horse had broken his disillusion that he could make friends with it, ever. He approached Klaus a few days later and told him he couldn't deal with the horse any more.

"Hokay, I underschtand...eetz not ze first time."

"Just great..." my bro thought.

Still, my bro didn't want to just abandoned the horse given that there wasn't anyone to take care of it properly. He still went occasionally to check on the horse and make sure it was getting the care it needed.

He stopped by one day and Klaus told him someone else had responded to his ad. A young girl had showed up and had taken over care of the old Nazi horse. My bro walked over to the stables to see how things were going. He walked in and there was the girl with a carrot in her mouth. The horse was nuzzling her face gently and then took the carrot. She had the horse's man braided and ribboned like a toy poodle. My bro could never get close enough long enough to do similar for fear of his life. "WTF?!? He said to Klaus..."

"Oh jah,..." said Klaus..."Ze horse alvays zeemed to get alonk better vit girlz, but you zeemed like zuch a nize younk man..."

My bro looked for the "krrop" in the corner. Small wonder, he thought.

That was the end of my bro's experiences with "The old Nazi horse"...

Case in point, I live in Southern Oregon, land of the Douglas Fir tree, the largest producing land of Doug Fir in the world. 80 years ago, the feds gave the timber producing counties millions of acres of land to harvest and manage for county government and job creation. Not federal lands, not state lands, County lands with a deed from the feds.

The lawyers and the spotted owl took all that away in the early 90's, we have lost so many jobs that our number one export now is our children that have to move away to find jobs. And part of the deal the lawyers made on our behalf is that the Feds would give my county, population 100,000, fifty million a year, yes 50 million a year in your taxes in what was called a "Safety Net", guaranteed for 10 years. Now the ten years is up and the lawyers from Sierra club, etc. are still getting paid to keep it in court, we still cannot cut our trees on county land, and Bush vetoed the "safety net" this year. It was put in on a military funding bill and called Pork. The veto is good if the politicians and sheriff's and little county workers cannot get paid maybe we will have some movement.

Not to go on and on but one more point. Due to the fact that we cannot harvest and replant our 40 year crop, they are all burning up anyway, along with hundreds or thousands of animals in the fires, including the spotted owl.

That is why I know it is not about the enviornment, it is about lawyers in court getting paid lawyer fees.
