Tim Russert worked for Mario Cuomo, but that’s the extent of my knowledge of the matter.

From Wikipedia:

Russert graduated with honors from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law [1] and then worked on New York Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan's successful senatorial campaign in 1976. He served as Moynihan's chief of staff to from 1977 to 1982. He then worked on New York Democrat Mario Cuomo's successful gubernatorial campaign in 1982, and was counselor in the governor's office in Albany from 1983 to 1984. He left politics and joined the NBC Washington Bureau in 1984. In 1985 he arranged for Pope John Paul II's first interview on American television.[6] He became Washington Bureau Chief in 1988 and was later promoted to the position of senior vice president of NBC News.[7]

It appears he has enough liberal credentials for the "fourth estate" to embrace him.

Patrick Buchanan has definitively joined the ranks of “pocket stuffers”, writing sensationalist books with no basis in reality.

Hanson just won a six-figure prize for his work and doesn't have time to bandy about with ignorant and ill-mannered freepers. Buchanan by contrast, hasn't held a real job since scribbling speeches for Richard Nixon forty years ago. You know he did a great job at that, too, by the memorable Nixonian lines we all cherish.

Hanson just won a six-figure prize for his work...

From Sheldon Adelson, I presume.

We’re a society that values entertainment over thought. As individuals, we can still choose to do what’s right—that’s truly today’s countercultural choice.

Behold, a self-fulfilling prophecy - a post to bemoan the ad hominem, filled with... you guessed it! Who would’ve guessed that the “diversity” of opinion on a PJB thread @ FR would correlate with the frequency of choosing which weapon to attack?
You will need to tread carefully, or you will get “Charles Johnson’ed.”

I was pleasantly surprised to find that VD's original article didn't contain what you call ad hominem. This one does though, but he can say that he was provoked.

If there's a lesson in this it's that people don't have authority outside of their areas of expertise. What Pat Buchanan thinks about WWII doesn't carry any weight at all, because he's an amateur when it comes to the history that era.

VDH, by contrast, has shown here that he does know about the origins of WWII and more power to him, but when he starts to pose as the great strategist of our time, watch out, because that's outside of his own area of expertise.

While VDH does not mention it - and neither does PJB - but I believe the disarmement treaties of the 20's and 30's played a huge part in bringing on WW II. Countries such as Germany, Italy, and Japan disregarded the treaties and rebuilt/built up their militaries while countries such as the US and GB more or less kept to them.

I read The Rise and Fall of the Third Riech by William Manchester - a fantastic read - three times. The Nazis basically started their Final Solution as soon as they got into power. From Wikepedia -

In 1933, the Dachau concentration camp was built by the Nazis.. It became the prototype for all other camps. During its operation, 190,591 prisoners died or were exterminated.

Also, Manchester relates that before the showers and ovens, the Nazis put their prisoners in large, closed trucks where the car exhaust would slowly kill them. This proved inefficient and thus the creation of the showers and ovens.

At one time I liked PJB but he showed his true colors years ago.
