LONDON (AFP) - A British employment tribunal on Monday awarded a Muslim woman 4,000 pounds (8,900 dollars, 5,100 euros) after a hair salon owner refused to employ her because she wears a headscarf.
The tribunal dismissed a claim of direct discrimination, but found that woman, Bushra Noah, had suffered indirect discrimination and awarded her the settlement for "injury to feelings".
The tribunal owner said she needed stylists to reflect the "funky, urban" image of her central London salon, and that new hires who have conventional hairstyles are requested to re-style it in a more "alternative" way.
In its judgement the London tribunal said it accepted Noah had not been treated differently because of her Muslim headscarf, but that it doubted there was as severe a risk to the business by employing someone wearing a head covering as the owner believed.
I honestly think these Muslims are looking to get discriminated against so they can sue.
England is falling fast.
Hey, that’s great! How many times can she apply for hairdressing jobs? What a great scam at British taxpayers’ expense.
I am thinking of putting together a team of 24 Sikh barbers who will apply for haircutting jobs all over the UK and sue when they aren’t hired. I’ll take my usual 1/3 cut (so to speak).
Little error there.
Get a little business savvy there, you never tell an applicant why they were rejected.
A tribunal of morons.
Four thousand pounds?? That’s one big woman!
Disarmed and surrounded by hostile Muslims.
Britannia's end will be just Custer's last stand.
An English friend was just here visiting. She bought pepper spray to take back. You can’t even buy that there.
What a sad way for a great nation to fall.
Western civ is toast, thanks to idiot PC liberalism and the American Communist Lawyers Union, and all their "grievance" pet causes, and if Obeymao gets elected, it's just going to get worse and worse.
I was stationed in Europe a few years ago with the military, and can assure you that your friend has much to fear.
Because the violent and uneducated muslim hordes are in Europe to conquer the place (through bloodshed if necessary), they will not be easily vanquished.
Just pray for your friend's safety in the coming years.
I am afraid so. I see no signs of the West fighting back.
They certainly do not apply equal standards is Muslim countries and never will because they WILL keep their culture as they prefer it.
Let me see, $8,900 for ‘injury to feelings’? I think I’ll move back to Britain and do something similar. No, wait, I have a conscience. Won’t be happening. So sad to see Britain buckling to the PC police.
Their combined effort is to destroy America as we know it.
But Mrs Noah, who had worked as a stylist before getting married in Syria in June 2006, claims she was so depressed by Miss Desrosiers rejection that she left the hair dressing trade soon afterwards.
She is now studying tourism and said of the interview at the Wedge salon: "She [Miss Desrosiers] just looked at me as if I was wasting her time.
"She said: 'You really should have told me on the phone that you wore a headscarf and I would have told you not to come in'."
Probably too fast to stop herself.
Sadly, so is the US.
So these jerks not only presume to know more about hair salon business that the owner, they assume that it's unimportant to customers to see how their stylist looks? It amazing that the Brits allow themselves to be ruled by such foolish petty tyrants.
“I am afraid so. I see no signs of the West fighting back.”
Yall aint been down to Texas lately, have ya? Or even Ohio, who elected a Donk but a pretty conservative and pro-2nd one (more so than that azzhat Taxt) last go around. The US has much further to fall than Europe, and despite the bad we see all the time, most of the US is getting a clue. When Europe goes full Eurabia and when a US city gets nuked (almost guaranteed under Obama, not a chance under McLame, and a negative chance under GW “you take two buildings, I take two countries” Bush), the swing will be hard, sharp, and bloody, but in the right direction.
We’ve been here before, specifically just before WWII. Lots of appeasers, even more openly pro-communist crowds, etc. then than even now. Most people don’t know it because it is not told in our history books, but there was a wave of lynchings of leftdolts across the nation after Pearl.
History repeats itself. Just remember, though, that we on the right and those in the middle aren’t the only ones to fail to learn its lessons. Those on the left (socialist/communist/nazi/fascist/islamist) fail to learn those lessons even moreso.
The communists see they can't argue with logic, so they punish because it's the end justifies the means. The only way to deal with people who make their own rules is to make your own rules reinforced with violence. The communists are proceding by using violance of the state to crush the opposition. The Bristish could go to an underground economy and starve the communists, or they could just throw the bastards out.
Upon reflection, I think that may be going a bit too far.
Very good point. Same goes for firing people. Just show them the door. Don't give them a reason, they'll use it in a lawsuit which will tie up your business for ages.
Exactly. Unless they are complete idiots they know anyway.
Of course in Europe it’s almost impossible to fire anyone.
For me, this article points out a trend that I find increasingly frightening both there and here in USofA. This is the bypassing of the court system in favor of 'code enforcement' hearings run by the government bureaucrats themselves.
I think that it is logical to believe that these same people are likely to have biases towards 'political correctness', rigid adherence to their rules/regulations and, overall, governmental control of behavior. I think we have been sold 'a bill of goods' in allowing this bypass, even if we can still go to the courts later. The drones still end up with defining the 'crime' and devising the 'punishment'.
i.e. we know your business better than you.
