Kanjorski pushes ‘dump the pump’
Times Leader ^ | 6/17/08 | Steve Mocarsky

Posted on 06/17/2008 6:15:31 AM PDT by Born Conservative

WILKES-BARRE – U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski on Monday blasted members of OPEC and the U.S. petroleum industry and asked the public to “dump the pump” and refrain from pumping gas and driving on Thursday unless absolutely necessary.

Kanjorski said that by cutting down the consumption of petroleum products by a few percentage points, Americans would send a message that “we’re aware of the fact that we’re being taken advantage of, and that this $135-a-barrel oil and $4-plus gasoline has to cease.”

Joined by Luzerne County Transportation Authority Director Stan Strelish at a press conference on Public Square, Kanjorski promoted public transportation and legislation he said would help reduce energy prices.

He asks that Americans use public transportation and refrain from pumping gasoline on Thursday as part of a nationwide initiative.

Strelish said anyone who drops $1 in a bus fare box on Thursday will receive a pass allowing him or her to ride any LCTA bus any time and anywhere for the entire day.

Kanjorski said those who must drive should try to carpool, and teens and adolescents should refrain from “cruising.”

The congressman said a message also must be sent to oil companies in the United States that, “rather than being satisfied with good profits, have gone on to celebrate enormous profits.”

“If we send a message that we’ve had enough, and damn it, we won’t take it anymore,” Kanjorski said, pounding his fist on a podium, “even the American oil companies will begin to realize that they should be satisfied with a reasonable profit, not the gigantic profit they’re getting now.”

Strelish said people learned the importance of mass transportation when gas prices doubled in the 1970s, but until recently, it has been underused. He expects that will change, given gas prices recently hitting $4 per gallon.

Kanjorski said he supports legislation he said can reduce energy costs, including House Bill 6052 – the Saving Energy Through Public Transportation Act. At the LCTA’s request, he plans to sponsor the bill, which would authorize $1.7 billion in grants for mass transit authorities for fiscal years 2008 and 2009 to help lower fares and expand transit services.

Kanjorski's previous plan to reign in high oil prices was to tax the "windfall profits" of the eeeeevil oil companies. Now, he must have received one of those emails to not buy gas on a particular day.

I hope he keeps coming up with these idiotic plans, so that he is replaced by "Mayor Lou" Barletta.

“Sending a message” has got to be the most overused expression in current usuage, although thankfully, it has declined somewhat in recent years.

Yah. This action would send a message that we’re focused on useless, meaningless ritual moves instead of ANYTHING that would make any kind of difference.

“At the end of the day” I’d like to see an IQ test given for Congress members.

Drill Here, Drill Now! Cheaper gas for me, more profit for the oil companies.

I called Senator Grassley’s office this morning, the guy that answered the phone said that they are getting a lot of calls in favor of drilling and tapping our own supplies of oil.

Republicans could hit this one out of the park, if they would only try.

This (expletive deleted) moron is but one example of the human waste we have elected to public office.

His (Kanjorski's) "gigantic profits" turns out to be roughly 10%.

Let's get some tar and feathers.

Republicans could hit this one out of the park, if they would only try.

If there is one issue that puts most voters into a state of apoplexy, it's gas prices. I would be running ads 24/7 with Pelosi's promise to cut gas price if only we'd elect a Democrat congress in 2006. And emphasizing that prices have doubled since the Democrats have been handed the keys to the store.

But they don't call the Republicans the "stupid party" for nothing!

How many times do I have to explain that this is a meaningless non-sacrifice?

How many of us must pump gas EVERY day?

A single day of boycotting is totally meaningless - you probably wouldn’t have needed to pump that day anyway!

It’s much like “boycotting” a store you previously didn’t like at all anyway! It’s meaningless!

To be meaningfull, better to say you won’t pump for a month - everyone surely will need to pump in that time, so it’d mean more.

Oh, but then you’d really be sacrificing, right? Ooops.

Lets pretend this idiotic suggestion would have an effect.

Who would it affect?

Certainly not OPEC, who pumped the crude, sold it, and made their money months ago.

Not the transportation companies, who hauled the crude in their tankers and dumped it off at the terminal and have already been paid.

The refinery took that crude and converted it into gasoline and other products, sold those products, and made their money.

Gasoline distributors took that gas, put it in trucks and delivered it to gasoline stations, where they’re often delivering COD - in other words, they get cash for the gas when they pump it into the gas station’s holding tank.

So who would this affect? The local businessman who owns that gas station on the corner. The one who paid for that gas he has in the ground that you won’t buy in order to make a cheap point. He still has to pay all his bills that day to stay open. He still has to pay his employees, and his property taxes, and all the other expenses he incurs in order to make that gasoline under his station available to you for the few cents he gets per gallon.

Yes, lets screw the businessman in our own neighborhood to make a point. That’ll show those eeeeeevil oil companies.

How blanking stupid is this?!!! Yeah, let’s stop driving on Thursdays and then everyone can get in line at the pumps on Friday and waste gas idling in the long lines. What is it with politicians and Washington, DC? Is it something in the water? No, I have two intelligent kids living in DC working in the conservative think-tank movement, so I know it isn’t the water.

This proposal is very economically silly. Refusing to buy gasoline does not ultimately change demand, as people would simply buy gasoline on a different day.

Or are people not supposed to drive on Thursday, also? This would conserve gasoline.

(I may have not understood an English retoric used in his terms of speech, so if my interpretation is not corrrect, please forgive me.)

Someone should publicly ask him why we should expect a bunch of countries that are basically unfriendly to the U.S. to give us a special discount price on oil, because we’re too damned stupid to drill or refine our own?

I’m sure Russia and Brazil and the Saudis will hasten remorsefully to sell us cheap gas at a discount if we boycott our local gas stations one day next week.

Simplest things to do to drive the price of oil down is open up the west to shale oil and coastal drilling, build more nukes and coal fired plants, implement coal gasification, have only 12 non-farm gasoline formations nationally ( one set of 3 each for rural and each urban winter, and the same for the summer formulations ), raise interest rates, cut spending to strengthen the dollar and finally, expand domestic refining capacity with reducing of the federal seriously remover the red tape to put these on the fast track.

Any Senator or Congressman saying anything different is whizzing down our backs and laughing in our faces.

So, when will Congress actually do something smart for a change?

Any 3 of these moves together would bring oil back to the $60/brl range in 30-60 days.
