While waiting for the Supreme Court's decision in the Heller case to come down, check out this article by a gun control lawyer, who used to work for Brady Center against Handguns, saying "gun free" zones like in D.C. or at Virginia Tech aren't successful.
I anxiously await both the decision and the subsequent relevant debates. We should hear on this before the end of the month. Most likely next Monday.
My understanding is that they will most likely release their decision Monday, but may try and slip it past today. I'm not sure about how they work such things even after all this time...
--that last sentence says it all---
If it wasn’t for the fact that I had so much fun with my Stevens .22 when I was a little squirt, I’d say you should require military service or a three day acquaintance class to own a weapon. I just can’t see some commission permitting youngsters to have that much fun if they didn’t experience it themselves. Requiring military service or a three day class is more than a lot of folks could do, especially the woman who needs a handgun to protect herself from a stalker or ex-boyfriend with evil intentions. No matter what we do criminals aren’t going to suddenly obey the laws.
Then we have to remember that when you get out of the below 25 age homicide numbers, something like 40 to 60 percent is suicides. The number jumps around quite a bit year to year.
And stays pretty much the same regardless of access to firearms. People that really want to kill themselves will find a way.
I point out the recent stories about the jump in suicides in Japan, a country where firearm ownership is just about non-existent.
I hope not, as I'll be outside of computer contact all next week!
