As Hollywood recovers from a tumultuous writers walkout that ended in February, U.S. television networks are bracing for a possible actors strike that could delay the upcoming fall TV season.
Jitters over renewed labor unrest have mounted in recent days as contract talks between the Screen Actors Guild and the major film and TV studios have grown increasingly rancorous with little or no sign that a settlement is near.
The three-year labor pact covering film and prime-time TV work for 120,000 SAG members is due to expire in two weeks.
SAG leaders triggered an outcry from the studios late last week by suggesting a deal was unlikely to be reached by the June 30 deadline and saying they were considering whether to seek permission of rank-and-file members to call a strike.
The talks, which began in April, have bogged down on some of the same issues that led to a work stoppage by screenwriters earlier this year, including payments earned by union talent from DVD sales and work created for the Internet.
The writers strike brought production on most scripted TV series to a halt, idled thousands of workers and forced networks to replace derailed programs with a glut of reruns and reality shows. One estimate put the total cost to the Los Angeles-area economy at $3 billion.

Man oh man this is bad. Will this delay the SC Chronicles? Will Summer Glau have to find work as a contract killer?
There was a writers strike??
Can’t they just work as AFTRA members if they want? They wouldn’t be crossing picket lines that way and shows still get done. I understand most working actors belong to both unions.

This will vastly improve the quality of entertainment.
The writers and actors will soon discover that the big studios don’t really care all that much. The majority of the public has displayed that all they care about is vulgar and obscene “reality” shows where the actors grovel in the mud and eat bugs for a chance to win a measley million dollars - so they get a whole “acting” ensemble for a whole season for the million dollars they once paid just their main actor for a season of work. What few scripted shows they produce will consist of mostly four-letter words, sexual inuendoes, nudity, homosexual agendas and constant “humorous” quips. So, why would the networks and studios care?
Finally, more good news from the marketers of deviance and death.
Ditto that, except for me its breaking news, classic movies on TCM, and TV Land which shows the TV shows I grew up with in the 60’s and 70’s. I have also become a fan of the old time radio on SIRIUS Satellite Radio, so often I just leave off the boobe tube, drift back in time and listen to Fibber McGee and Molly, or Abbott and Costello, or the radio version of Gunsmoke. The classic shows now on DVD are also nice to have around.
Todays TV with its multiple channels Suck. There was more to watch in 1967 with only 5 channels
Oh please, oh please, oh please; go ahead and strike.
Hey, where’s the “Not this Sh*t again” guy?
Science and Discovery do not rely on SAG, FAG, or any other guild and you can learn a thing or two as well.
Hey, I watched a program the other day about the Big Bang and for once I actually understood it. Don’t know if I believe it yet, but I it made sense, which was more than I could say before that show.
Exactly! Isn't it great?!! Let 'em go on strike. Reality shows will proliferate.
Actually a better idea would be to hire scabs. Maybe they can get the guys who played for the NFL that one strike season. Heck, I'd watch those too!
Good, after they bankrupt the nets, they can go to work in Paris, Bohn, Rome, Madrid and London and spew their anti America bs.
America is no longer the target audience for movies and tv pseudo drama. The real economic targets are in Europe and Asia where America is hated.
Like a lot of unions this one has its elites (including the union bosses) who will be vocal and eat very nicely, thank you, and then the rest of the schmucks who will be on Hamburger Helper while Baldwin, Penn, Clooney, and Sarandon do the emoting for the news cameras. That's about all the sympathy I'm likely to work up, but it's a fact.
Yeah, they teased me last night with a long commercial for the SCC. I was sitting there going "YEAH!". Then they said Fall 2008. Bummer!
We always have YouTube!
I’m one of those people who left network TV after the last strike. There were several weekly shows I followed, but just didn’t really care after the long hiatus of the strike. What planet do these people live on? A bigger percentage of nothing is still nothing.

Go on Strike.
P l e a s e .
You just reminded me.

Yes PLease. Lets see: Food TV, History & Discovery Channel, FOX, and a 10 year supply of Cops. Ya, I am covered.
So, Angelina Jolie gets 20 million for a film while there are thousands of “actors” out there waiting tables and working odd jobs while occasionally working for “scale.”
IT’S NOT FAIR! Something has to be done about the inequality in the acting business. All actors should be paid the same, no matter who they are or what they do.
All those “extras” on tv and film sets are being exploited by the few elite actors who make millions.
Maybe Obama can fix it!
If they go on strike how will we know? Will someone send out a memo or something?
Old red will have to stop playing the role he threw away on NYPD. I think that’s what he is currently doing on CSI Miami.
If you like, I can put you on our Dinosaur Media DeathWatch ping list so you can be up to date...
You are correct. Also, SAG now has three precedent agreements to use as guides in negotiating a deal. A strike should be avoided. But I don’t know that it will.
I sure don’t want a another strike.
Well this explains why they put off finishing Battlestar Galactica until 2009.
Who cares? As long as you have network, and cable, news channels, there will be NO LACK OF SHOW BUSINESS!
Interesting enough that all the high paid and professional actors and I would rather watch a truck driver Hugh Rowland on Ice Road Truckers than the so called professionals.
Actually they do. If you watched the NASA specials, Gary Sinese narrates them. Lots of actors narrate these specials.
Full Length Movies Coming To YouTube
YouTube has announced The YouTube Screening Room, a dedicated area on YouTube that will showcase an international selection of films.
The YouTube Screening Room will feature four new high-quality short films every two weeks, as well as feature-length films on a case-by-case basis.
Filmmakers will have the opportunity to submit their work for consideration through an online submission process. YouTube says that his will create new business opportunities for filmmakers and bring films to YouTube users that they otherwise wouldn’t see.
People will be able to communicate directly with filmmakers to share thoughts, exchange opinions with fans, and provide honest feedback using YouTube's features to comment, rate, and share films. The YouTube Screening Room will also include a "Buy Now" button, allowing filmmakers to link to websites selling DVDs and digital downloads of their films, as well as a High Quality player, which offers users the best viewing experience possible.

i've seen TWO movies in the last five years. the Passion and the 300. and since i don't have TV either, not worried.
now if all the RACECARDRIVERS went on strike... i'd have a problem.
Except... I have two words for you... Alan Rosenberg.
I KNEW it! You’re a famous actor in disguise, aren’t you, Karnage?
Almost... writer-director...
