Posted on 06/20/2008 3:14:56 AM PDT by Fennie
U.S. officials say Israel carried out a large military exercise this month that appeared to be a rehearsal for a potential bombing attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, The New York Times reported on Friday.
Citing unidentified American officials, the newspaper said more than 100 Israeli F-16 and F-15 fighters took part in the maneuvers over the eastern Mediterranean and Greece in the first week of June.
It said the exercise appeared to be an effort to focus on long-range strikes and illustrates the seriousness with which Israel views Iran's nuclear program. The newspaper said Israeli officials would not discuss the exercise...

If only we had half the intestinal fortitude that the Israelis have.
Exercises by various nations happen all the time. To conclude it’s offensive is an opinion and nothing more.
Exercise APPEARED to be...
And thanks NYT for disclosing this.... Unnamed officals.... appeared to be.... pure conjecture.
I had intended to post that any military action would have to wait for the next Israeli PM, probably Natenyahu. That the incumbent lacks the fortitude for such an action after his debacle in Lebanon. Military maneuvers are sometimes just maneuvers.
Then it occurred to me that with the corruption charges poised to take him down, such a high-stakes gamble might be the only chance he has to ensure a legacy other then a cheaply bought and paid-for politician. The leader who defanged the Iranian nuke program would be a significant figure in Israeli history regardless of lesser problems. It’s an interesting thought.
We've overflown the Mediterranean many times.
Why is it heroic when Israel does it?
They may have the guts... but not the firepower or logistical support to fully succeed in conventional airstrikes. Essentially, they will just kick the beehive and hope Iran goes mental... by lashing out at America in Iraq and unleashing their trained monkeys in Lebanon and Gaza.
No matter who starts it, it's a job that must be attended to... and finished.
Tne New York TImes, like the IAEA, is on its knees for Iran.
Geez, not quite as scary as it might have been two years ago.
Bluff. If they could maneouvre the US of A to do another war, sure, but Israel will not fight alone.
And what is ‘GOD’s’ role here?
Since you seem privileged to know.
Please. The Olmert Govt is weak. Nothing in Israel is going to happen until his crises is over. This may be dragged into the President McCain administration, because Olmert is not going any where until January.
un-identified officials again. Un-elected too?
And what is GODs role here?
The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” - Genesis 12:1-3
I don’t know about you, but if I have a choice to either be blessed by God or be cursed by Him, I’m going to go for the blessings.
We can only hope.
Oh right. And so those in people who moved to Palestine from Russia, Germany, and other places in Europe are the true descendants of “Abram.”
Seems a lot of people are descendants of ‘Abram,’ so before I’ll subscribe to your interpretation of mythology, I’ll have to ask to see a receipt.
A nuclear “accident” at the Iranian nuke facility would solve the problem, at least temporarily. One cruise missile, stealth cloaked, a 10 KT kaboom...and plausible deniability.
1 little, 2 little, 3 little imams....
Don’t forget to root out the hidden 12th one.
And we were, when the Jew Jesus Christ sacrificed himself for us.
I believe “smite” is the verb most appropriate in this case.
The grand encore of “operation opera” is -— when the fat lady sings!
Do we have the intestinal fortitude to let them do it. The IAF will have to flyover Iraq to target Iran’s nukes. If we allow them to fly unopposed over Iraqi airspace we may as well do the mission ourselves since we’ll be receiving just as much condemnation as Israel. If I were betting I’d say that the President is about to send Condi back to Jerusalem to tell the Israelis to stand down. Whether the Israelis do stand down depends on whether they believe we will actively oppose their efforts.
What? You think maybe they wait until the President is out of office and someone named Hussein is in? This democracy stuff has a funny way of making stuff happen that otherwise might not. Remember when Iran released the hostages? If Carter doesn’t leave and Reagan come in, it never happens and then who knows what might have developed.
Hopefully one of those Israeli fighters is training for a visit to the New York Times offices.
Wrong on both counts, compadre.
The Obamination gets elected Potus and it is January 20, 2009.
The Obamination has just said his version of being sworn in as Potus:
“ I do solemnly swear [or affirm] that I will not support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, I will not bear true faith and allegiance to the same: that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and I will not faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me Allah.
As the Obamination starts to speak, his Pentagon guy with the football tells Obamination, that shorty after he was sworn in, Israel destroyed the political and military assets of Iran and Syria. The Mossad has killed every al Queda leader in Iran, Iraq, fghanistan, Europe and America.
Also, Israeli leaders on world wide tv are showing and documenting the Obamination’s full Islamofascist connections and most of the rats in Congress. They have demanded the surrender of those members of Congress and the Obamination to Israel and Iraq for abetting the killing of innocent Israelis and Iranians by supporting Islamofascists.
George $oreA$$ and his family members and various phoney non profit leaders are in Israel at this time being tried as War Criminals.
Because they take on proportionally bigger opponents than we do.
Are you saying that Israel HOPES Iran would take it out on America?
Like taking down Saddam? Yep, no guts here.
“Report: Israel Held Drill As Preparation For Attack On Iran”
Wouldn’t it have been had if they had not?
“Exercises by various nations happen all the time. To conclude its offensive is an opinion and nothing more.”
Today speculators are using this “news” to once again drive up the cost of oil.
Not exactly. Churchill didn't hope for Pearl Harbor... but he thanked God America was finally in the game.
Are you saying that Israel HOPES Iran would take it out on America? ..... Cinnamon Girl
That is exactly what johnny7 is saying and johnny7 has correctly assessed the logistical and operational realities of the situation.
Iran's nuclear facilities are too dispersed, hardened and defended to be knocked out with 100 sorties launched from as far away as Israel. That would be a task requiring a Shock & Awe air campaign over a few weeks that only U.S. air power can accomplish.
During Desert Storm, the coalition air campaign flew a total of 109,876 sorties over the 43-day war, an average of 2,555 sorties per day.
Such a campaign is simply beyond Israel's capabilities. Israel can start the fight but only the U.S. can finish it. Israel knows that.
Don't be too shocked about the Realpolitiks of war. Israel, like Britain in World War II, HOPES to survive and Israel is aware of the military realities.
"To have the United States at our side was to me the greatest joy. Now at this very moment I knew the United States was in the war, up to the neck and in to the death. So we had won after all!...Hitler's fate was sealed. Mussolini's fate was sealed. As for the Japanese, they would be ground to powder." ...... Winston Churchill writing about his reaction to Pearl Harbor
Iran’s nuclear facilities are too hardened to be directly rendered ineffective by conventional Israeli airstrikes, even multiple ones... and possiby even by unconvetional (read: bunker-busting) strikes.
But, those facilities prob aren;t self-sustaining. They need fuel, maybe electricity, people, etc. And they also need to be run by a goverment & military with a leadership that is still alive, and one that is not overturned by a people who are begging for the pain to stop.
Hit their refinery and electric plants too the.
You have a much less cynical view of human nature than I do. :-)
See Post 40.
I believe than Churchill probably did hope that something, whatever it needed to be, brought the U.S. into the war on the British side. Britain's very survival depended on it.
Someone's read Churchill's memoirs... ;)
The monthly expiration of the futures contract is also happening, and the lowering of Chinese fuel price support is now seen as driving crude oil up rather than down as it was yesterday. Market analyst appears to be a flexible job description. This happened AND that happened, therefore Cause-Effect and tomorrow the opposite and no one with actual money involved even cares.
It makes for a better story. ;)
should be were.
As I recall, there is a new covenant
In your opinion...which you are most welcome to FRiend.
We are doing nicely thank you both in Iraq and Afghanistan and other terror havens that fall below the radar. Israel could not be more pleased, we are a staunch and reliable Allie ... they owe their existence, in many respects, to the U.S..
Please explain the latest foray by Israel into Lebanon, alone.
