Washington - The U.S. House of Representatives approved last night a $465 million fund included in the Mérida Plan to fight drug-trafficking in Mexico and Central America.

The initiative, which President George W. Bush proposed in October of last year, was appproved with 416 votes in favor and 12 against, legislative sources said.

The approval includes a total of $400 million for Mexico and $65 million for Central American countries.

"The Congress has reached an agreement to support the first year of the initiative meant to fight drug-trafficking and the violence it generates," said Democrat Howard Berman, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Legislative sources indicated that the bill is expected to be debated and approved by the Senate next week.

The beneficiaries are Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Belize, and Panama in Central America, and Haiti and the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean.

For the last few years, Mexico has become a platform for the smuggling of Colombian-produced cocaine into the United States.

Drug trafficking has generated a wave of violence in which some 1,400 people have died this year in Mexico.

The U.S. Department of State will have to submit a detailed expense plan to the Appropriations Committee within 45 days.

How about they build the fence and secure the border? Then it wouldn’t be so easy for them to bring drugs in from Mexico.

Stopping it at the border would be far more effective than paying off corrupt latin American officials.

These are all countries in the falsely named “free trade” agreement, CAFTA (except for Mexico which has its very own falsely named “free trade” agreement called NAFTA) which supply crooked “free trader” businessmen with their illegal alien labor in this country.

Where is the slightest evidence that they want to stop it? The drug economy is keeping the regular economy (and the continued growth of government) afloat.

We could dry the drug trade up if those who use them would simply stop. Interesting that we gripe about the cost of fuel and drug users will pay even more for a hit.

Let me connect some dots for you.

After SPP was announced 2005, Lugar introduced his North American Perimeter Security legislation and Harris introduced it into the House.

The Lugar legislation included Central America as part of the perimeter.

Now that SPP has become a dirty word, they had to masquerade their intent and now refer to it as drug interdiction.

So, the libs will agree that we need to spend $400+ million to fight drugs smuggling in LA so the drugs don’t end up here.

Wonder why they don’t think fighting terrorists on their home turf will keep the terrorists from coming here?

"Wonder why they don't think fighting terrorists......."

This all falls under the broader subject of Narco-Terror.

Also realize that there are substantial amounts of money the feds will spend stateside.
