[Fred Thompson writes:]
Our Democratic friends are once again scrambling to defend Senator Obama's latest national security gaffe.
Obama supports the recent Supreme Court majority opinion in the Boumediene decision, which extended for the first time habeas corpus rights to foreign enemy combatants held abroad. The Senator went even further than the Court and said that accused terrorists should be tried in American courts as was Omar Abdel Rahman, "the blind sheik", who masterminded the first World Trade Center bombing.
Last week, in a call with reporters and bloggers, I pointed out Obama's folly. The Rahman case demonstrates some of the main reasons why we should not treat enemy combatants as ordinary criminal defendants. Such proceedings potentially compromise results, sources and methods of intelligence gathering. In the course of prosecuting Rahman, the government was compelled to turn over a list of un-indicted co-conspirators to the defendant. That list included the name of Osama bin Laden. We later learned that within ten days a copy of that list reached bin Laden in Khartoum, letting him know that his connection to that case had been discovered.
My comments apparently caused the DNC to send out an A.P.B. for anything that might help their candidate out of this problem. Their "Googling" efforts revealed the fact that last year I pointed out that bin Laden would have to be given due process when he is apprehended.
Given that our Democrat friends apparently don't understand what "due process" means for enemy combatants, they probably thought they had found a silver bullet for their candidate. For them, my statement supports Obama's argument for terrorist trials in United States courts.
Of course, it doesn't...

The comments on the article are interesting as well. Obama isn’t qualified to be an intern and has managed to get where he is.
Reminds me of the little video response to poor old fat Michael Moore ... and when I read Fred’s words, I can hear his voice in my head. Kinda like the sound of that wisdom don’tchaknow.
I still want Fred. I say we organize a national “Draft Fred” campaign and force the RNC to dump McCain at the convention.
Tell me that wouldn’t ignite the base.
Sure am glad that everyone on this board went for the Huckster and Romney and the rest. Thanks for not supporting the conservative in the race... Least he still remembers which team he plays on. GO FRED!
The only way we could get Fred as President is for McCain to pick him as running mate and then after taking office John could not continue as president. Frankly, I hope Joihn picks Fred because John sure isn’t up to dealing with the lying deceit-filled media and the dnc.
If ONLY someone like Fred could be making policy or helping shape it in the next administration.
Not true at all.
If you, I, and another million Republicans emailed the RNC today, and demanded that they replace McCain with Fred, it would happen.
The RNC doesn't own us, or the process of electing our president. They can only force upon us that which we are willing to accept.
There is no law which binds the American people to accept the nominee of any political party. This isn't a totalitarian dictatorship - yet.
No - the only reason we're going to get McCain is because not enough of us will raise our voices against him.
But after watching him campaign this past year, I am left wondering if it would be enough to ignite Fred.
If Fred had been a Governor of Tennessee at one time, he would be a shoo-in for VP.
I only wish I’d had the chance to vote for Fred.
Fred wouldn't be the first reluctant, yet magnificent leader.
For all of his very real faults and missteps, Harry Truman loved this country and knew his duty to America and to our allies.
He never wanted the job of VP, much less the top job, but it came to him nonetheless. Once there, he performed beyond his capabilities in many ways.
Fred Thompson has the right temperament and the right principles to run this country. He's courageous, a bona fide patriot, and he's what we need at this time. We need to draft him for president for the good of the country.
I like Fred. I think his adherence to the written Constitution and preference to turn a lot of political issues back to the States to decide is exactly correct.
However, given that he endorsed McCain on February 12th of this year, when he quit the campaign, how is this draft Fred effort going to work?

A non vote for McCain is a vote for Obama!
I like Fred too, but, let’s face reality, he was a lousy candidate.
How many votes did McCain get?
We can dream. :(
I still want Fred. I say we organize a national Draft Fred campaign and force the RNC to dump McCain at the convention.
How can this happen when he was unable to get more than 2 or 3 percent of the population to vote for him in the primaries. As much as it sickens me, we are stuck with who we have.
“Fred! Instead”
Someone in the comments at Hot Air left that one. I sense a new sticker in the works...
If you have noticed recently they are now trying to pull the same stunt with McCain. I have seen articles in the past few days about his campaign being in disarray, how he is lacking focus, etc., etc. I guess they figure it worked before so they will try it again...
I think you misunderstood. I will be voting FOR Fred Thompson! I will NOT be forced to vote for the choices put forward by either the RNC or DNC. Fred may not win, but I will have not lost.
Well, I gave money to Fred - not much but I donated. However, by the time the primary came around in Maryland, Fred had already dropped out and so did Romney. I voted for Romney anyway.
NO! you are the one who doesn’t get it. Fred isn’t running.
Foolish thinking!
It started with the Rudy folks creating a rotten narrative on Fred because he was coming on fast. That narrative was hard to shake and those same folks drifted to Romney then McCain. Fred was the closest thing to a real conservative in the race. Now we are stuck with McCrazy.
I sent Fred’s campaign $100. He sent me a thank you note with a combination of my name and my wife’s name...
Yeah, and that probably went right to McCain’s camp like mine did. I think that is fine actually, but I have yet to send McCain anything. Frankly, at this moment, I could care less. That is unfortunate.
I could add about 20 more things to that list, but like I said, I am really apathetic about the race right now. Not sour grapes per se, but just frustrated that the only Republican running is one I loathed for years watching the Sunday shows.
Foolish thinking!
)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
I wonder how many like you that will vote for McCain simply to vote against Obama are willing to send a lot of your hard earned cash to the McCain campaign.
You may not be aware that even though I am not running for the President of the USA I am FREE to vote for myself is I so please. Freedom is not foolish. Acting as a lemming is foolish.
I’ll hold my nose while I vote in November.
I’m voting for McCain - Obama is to dangerous to ignore.
I usually help get people to the polls, drive people such and so forth. This year someone might have to drag my rear to be honest. Not motivated.
Think we could pull off a Torricelli and dump McCain for Fred? It worked in NJ.
Thanks for not supporting the conservative in the race...
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I voted for Fred Dalton Thompson in the South Carolina primary, thank you very much!
“He was a lousy candidate because from day one the MSM told everyone he was a lousy candidate. Conservatives knew he was closer to them on all the issues than either Romney or Huckabee but they chose to believe what they were fed by the media.”
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
You got that right! Hit one more nail squarely on the head and you are an honorary carpenter.
It's amazing to me that people will stubbornly ignore this...stubborn, egotistic, ignorant? or all three.
I would like to see Fred appointed as AG...
ahh................
the not understanding is on your part...or you think we're too dumb to understand that if you vote for someone else, that is a NON VOTE for McCain....which gives O another vote up. Math is absolute. No amount of tongue twisting can change it...
I just can't see my active duty children saluting a Marxist!
Got an address?
Exactly.
If he can’t be Veep, we need Fred on the Supreme Court!
Do you like Obama less than McCain? If you don't vote for McCain that's who you'll get. I don't like McCain much myself; Fred was my guy, but he's far and away better than Obama. Since the War on Terror and the Supreme Court are two of the most important issues to me, McCain is much better on either of them than Obama, so I'll have no problem voting for McCain.
Offered like a Barrite liebertarian. All Barry Obamamessiah needs is for the republican brand to be fractured. Keep working, you’ll get him elected yet!
What color is the sky in Hyperbole Land?
To you willfully blind, it doesn’t matter, all colors are the same as they circle down the drain of conceit you focus upon.
I need that little smiley parading around with the OMG OMG on it. Some of you folks absolutely amuse me! The hard work some of you are doing to stomp on the constitution in other arenas while promoting this liberal Republican all makes a lot of sense. Conservative my foot.
Go Fred!
