During the week after Fathers Day, I received a number of interesting emails from readers asking me to write about the dearth of looting after the recent floods in Iowa. Specifically, they wanted me to write about the reason there was so much more looting in New Orleans after Katrina hit the Chocolate City in 2005. Of course, the problem involves so much more than race a factor most people are thinking about, even if they wont admit it...

Maybe Looter guy was on vacation
I love the outraged replies from Liberals on Adams’ website. It is all racism, you know.
—interesting article-—and another place to point out that the black male “community” murders more of its own members every few months than were lynched in the entire period 1865 to present-—
Given the lack of any mention of whether or not there is any white looting in Iowa, the headline is very strange, indeed.
In fact, I would expect there to be SOME white looting in Iowa. I have been a high school teacher for 30 years; and in the past two or three years, for the first time, a significant number of my students, predominantly white, raise their hand when asked if they would loot if a chaotic event occurred. I usually use news events where looting is occurring, here or abroad, to broach the question. In one class, again predominantly white, some hispanic, some native American, lower-level achiving, 70% raised their hands. I let them know, mainly by leaving my jaw on the floor for a few beats, how shocked I was at such an attitude. The times, they are a-changin’.
Yes, there’s white looting here in Iowa. One woman was arrested in Cedar Rapids for trying to take bottles of alcohol out of a flooded bar.
Um....
That’s it.
It is hard to loot in a tightly knit community. In a big city it is easier to justify taking from someone you don’t know, but it is pretty hard to take from a neighbor you see at the grocery store, the gas station and at church.
Looting also requires a mob mentality with others grabbing the stuff you can’t get to.
They’re too busy filling up sandbags.
Perhaps there’s been a serious loss of ethical consciousness.
I'll agree with that...

NOLA Convention Center after Katrina
Idle question:
In the Soviet Union, was stealing from someone rich considered wrong?
That's a completely meaningless statistic.
You might also notice that malnutrition kills more people in the United States each year (3510, almost all elderly, according to official CDC statistics) than died in the September 11 attacks (2974, not counting 19 terrorists).
Yet only an idiot would say that malnutrition poses a bigger problem for Americans than Osama bin Laden.
As a Great American, Willie Cunningham, points out...it has nothing to do with race. It has to do with bankrupt culture. Once, black music gave us R&B, Gospel, Blues and Rock. Today, if you asked someone to give you an example of "black music" they would probably say "Rap". You do the math.
You can post a comment at the site, if you wish.
The times, they are a-changin.
I don't think so. Looting has never been tied to race, just class and character. If there was a nation wide disaster we'd certainly see our share of looters of all races.
I clicked on this provocative headline fully expecting to see a crowd of white looters emptying stores while knee-deep in muddy flood waters.
Instead, the only muddied waters I found were an assortment of hackneyed excuses that have flooded the currents of society for the past 40-some years.
To me it is rather obvious that you can’t tear down and build up at the same time unless you count anthills.
Maybe the cops and politicians in Iowa aren’t as crooked as they clearly are in New Orleans.
How is it meaningless? Murder is murder isn't it?
Wow, you have a chip on your shoulder. I take it you're a fan of Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Madonna? Aren't they paragons of "white" music? If you're going to accuse 40 million black Americans of having a "bankrupt culture" maybe you should pause a moment for some self-reflection.
It is about culture; a sub-culture that teaches that The Man has stolen things from you, so it is OK to steal things back.
Yes, you got it. All 40 million American blacks thinks it's ok to steal and that's what "black culture" says. What rock did you crawl out from under?
Big screen TV’s. Yummy!
“In the Soviet Union, was stealing from someone rich considered wrong?”
in Soviet Russia, the rich steal YOU !! (hey OT)
I’m sure they planned to eat all of those televisions that were stolen within hours of the hurricane.
Interesting also is all the ads for security systems or drug rehab. have used only whites ..... imagine a picture of a black guy in a mask doing a home break in or talking about his drug rehab clinic .....
Let’s face facts; All of us know the reason that we do not see images of looters in Iowa. It is that the racist news media won’t show images of whites looting while they will show images of blacks like they did in New Orleans.
WOW- I got sick writing that even though I know it was sarcasm.
The real reason is that the kind of people you have in Iowa are very different than the the type in New Orleans. Or at least most of the people in Iowa are different from many in New Orleans.
We all have to be PC now. I wonder why this has not been mentioned in MSM?
We had looting here in the Missouri Ozarks after recent tornados. A friend had her house demolished. While she tried to find her belongings, other people picked through whatever was blown around. They even tried to dig up plants from her yard.
You cant be series?
And dead people are dead people. More Americans are killed each year by hepatitis than died in 9/11 and Pearl Harbor, combined.
Am I trying to minimize the importance of 9/11 or Pearl Harbor? No. But don't manipulate statistics to try to minimize the impact of lynching, which was a form of domestic terrorism. The power of terrorism on a population far surpasses its numerical toll.
Just got this from my BIL in email. Might as well pass it along...

Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa/Illinois and helping the folks affected by the floods?
Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn’t solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and trailers) are?
Why isn’t the Federal Government relocating Iowa/Illinois people to free hotels in Chicago?
When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed?
Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?
Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?
When will we hear anyone say that he wants to rebuild a “vanilla” Iowa/Illinois, because that’s the way God wants it?
Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism?
Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?
Why, in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa/Illinois flooding ever again?
Wow, you have a chip on your shoulder.
Nope, I just hate rap music and all that it glorifies. If you can see a way in which treating women like "hoes", glorifiying gun violence, and drug use is somehow superior to the Ink Spots mellow crooning, the dulcit tones of The Platters, or the heartfelt joy of Mahalia Jackson, then you are a better man than I am. I am more impressed by people that can compose beautiful music than those who can rhyme under time pressure.
And completely aside from the issue of the impressive and beautiful music black culture has given us in the past, when was the last time you heard of a barbershop quartet being involved in putting a cap in someone's @$$?
Yeah, I bet the color televisions and bags of Nikes, I saw being carried out of stores [in NO] on the news, were very nutricious. /sarc
-”Suppose you had a family to feed but had no money, would it be ok to steal a loaf of bread?”
-”I guess so.”
-”Suppose you had a large family would it be ok to steal a truckload of bread.”
-”Sure.”
-”Suppose your family like cigarettes better than bread; would it be ok to steal a truck load of cigarettes?” The Simpsons
I have no idea, from this thread, what in the H-E-double hockeysticks you are talking about.
Check out the rates of black-on-white rape, gang rape, murder, and assault and then get back to us.
“But don’t manipulate statistics to try to minimize the impact of lynching, which was a form of domestic terrorism.”
Pointless to talk about lynching 150 years ago, as you noted in your original reply. There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.
Are we now going back into history with new-age PC terms like ‘domestic terrorism’ to describe past injustices? Are you for real? Is this limited only to lynching? Slavery deserves a doubleplusgood word too!
I remarked to my wife, as we watched the coverage of Iowa, of the cooperative workline of people filling up the sacks of sand in an orderly manner. There were some teenagers, young men and women, but older, fat, grandmotherly types were in the same line. They were not bitching. They kept up with the younger people and a few even had smiles on their faces. Where was Wolfe Blitzer saying, "But....they are just so white." Those people exemplified the pioneer spirit and rugged individualism to deal with whatever nature threw at them. They were Americans.

Your class might be interested in a similar question asked at our senior center. All raised their hand when asked “would you shoot looters if you had the means to do so during a chaotic event?”
you still need to eat during a natural disaster.

Especially during sporting events you’re trying to watch on the big screen you just stole and can’t power up for some reason.
You're suggesting that barbershop quartets are somehow reflective of mainstream "white culture" (whatever that means)? How many barbershop quartet-playing radio stations do you pick up in your neck of the woods?
My guess is that about as many whites 18-35 listen to barbershop quartets as blacks -- approximately zero, give or take.
Making racial arguments here is simply demented.

We don’t have such a rule at FR. I think we should. I use excerpts as teasers.
And what’s wrong with going to a site to get the story?
It looks like they pulled the column. Not available from your link or from Townhall.com. Must have offended too many sensitive types.
“Maybe another factor is that people have been free to leave the affected portions of Iowa”
People were free to leave NO also. They had the wherewithal to leave before they were trapped in Iowa
They must have pulled it. I went to the site two ways and its not to be found.
It's amazing and sad - how ANYONE can rewrite history to rationalize one of the most criminal and uncivilized episodes in our history.
For days before the storm - the Federal Government issued WARNINGS of the impending danger---advising INCOMPETENT CITY and STATE Government (all of whom were elected by these same citizens) to LEAVE the city.
They were not "imprisoned" by anything but their own lack of initiative and DEPENDENCE upon others to care for them.
At some point -- those who wish respect, must demonstrate a character and behavior deserving respect under ANY and ALL circumstances.
Doesn't sound like they were "imprisoned" before they became marauding mobs and folks responded to keep them from entering their neighborhoods... or the storm whose warnings they ignored washed out streets and drowned the buses their ignorant Mayor never put into service...
What excuse or rationale will you offer for the NOLA thugs who were welcomed into CHARITABLE host sanctuary cities -- and immediately showed their gratitude by raising their crime rates to all time highs?
What explanation would you offer for the completely different citizen response in areas that were FAR more damaged by the full force of the storm in Mississippi and Alabama???
All areas of America are not the same. The people in this part of the country don't spend a bunch of time waiting around for the government to come in and do what we can do ourselves. I'm not saying that looting could never be a problem in these types of situations or that the government may never be needed, but it's just not the first thing that comes to mind when a "tragedy" strikes.
Cordially,
Congressman Billybob
