In a historic appointment, President Bush selects Lt. Gen. Ann Dunwoody to direct the Army Materiel Command.
WASHINGTON -- President Bush on Monday nominated a top logistics officer to be the first female four-star general in U.S. history, tapping Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody to head the command responsible for supplying the Army with all its equipment.
Dunwoody's selection as chief of Army Materiel Command comes nearly 11 years after the first female three-star general was appointed, as head of Army intelligence, and 38 years after the first two female Army one-stars were named.

Clinton was going to nominate Lt Gen Claudia Kennedy head of the DIA, which would probably given her an additional star, but the Senate said she wouldn’t fly.
Speaking of Claudia Kennedy, some say she’s on Obama’s short list to be a running mate.
Material Command! Oh now there’s an insult! What’s she going to spend her time on, picking out the latest line of materials for the oh so in fashion in camouflage? Disgraceful and an insult to women!!!
What’s that? Not material. Materiel?
Oh, never mind.
She is a Master Blaster?
WTF?
She’s a three-star general...
What are you???
You, pimple in the ass of humanity, are not worthy of licking her shoes clean.
And on that note, I congratulate LtGen Dunwoody on her promotion, and thank her for her service to this country.
And as for you, I doubt you’ve ever done anything useful for the country.
Can’t be true... EVERYONE knows that the Rethuglicans are only an Old Boys network and will never let a woman get ahead...

Could not have said it better myself. Here is some of her accomplishments:
Lieutenant General Ann E. Dunwoody took over as deputy chief of staff, G-4 for the Army in October 2005. Prior to this, she served as commanding general of the United States Army Combined Arms Support Command in Fort Lee, Va. Among her assignments, she has served as commander of the Division Support Command, 10th Mountain Division (light), at Fort Drum, N.Y., and special assistant to the Chief of Staff in the Army. Dunwoody has also served as executive officer to the director of the Defense Logistics Agency From May 1989 to May 1991, Dunwoody served as executive officer and later division parachute officer for the 407th Supply and Transportation Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in Fort Bragg, N.C., and Operations Desert Shield/Storm in Saudia Arabia. Dunwoody graduated from the State University of New York with a bachelors degree in physical education. She holds a masters degree in logistics management from the Florida Institute of Technology and a masters degree in national resource strategy from National Defense University. Her awards and badges include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, Master Parachutist Badge and the Army Staff Identification Badge.
She comes from a military family, one that has served the county since the Civil War. Including her HUSBAND.
By the way for all you non-serving, assholes that may post on this thread. Master Blaster means she probably does have more balls than you.
Apparently that particular grandmother does wear Army boots. ;)
Well said, El Conservador.
And thanks for the info, 11Bush.
LOL
she must have been a real joy to work under, while she was PMS-img all those years.
“She comes from a military family, one that has served the county since the Civil War. Including her HUSBAND.”
WOW he’s pretty old, huh? :)
Congratulations to a well deserving and very brave lady. What a great way to make history.
Your comment is shameful and inappropriate to someone serving our nation in time of war.
I don't know. Do your employees complain when you are?
According to the information in your post, this was her assignment during Operation Desert Shield/Storm, but I have no idea what it means.
they never look like Laurie Dhue :(
Without doubt she’s a tough troop. Her biography seems to have many things in common with Eisenhower. Eisenhower’s claim to fame was not that of Bradley, Patton, Montomgery, LeMay, McArthur to name some big ones of that era. Eisenhower’s claim to fame wasn’t that of Black Jack Pershing of WWI.
Eisenhower’s claim to fame was that of a logistician, and that he was able to pull Operation Overlord off; no small feat at the time and given IT of the era.
I served USAF Army support as a meteorological technician in Reagan’s military. While I was in tech school they were begging for MAC personell. Napoleon said it well: “an army doesn’t walk on its feet, it walks on its belly.”
Of course very few were interested in such a tour; everybody wants to go to where the “glory” is.
Now I know that the arial refuelers would give their last dregs to those in need to RTB (or complete the mission). Now I know the value of the thankless toil, sweat, tears (and even some blood) for those logistics experts who facilitated Gulf War I & II. Khe Sahn wasn’t won exclusively by a battle commander (and neither was the Berlin Airlift).
An army marches on its stomach, and as bad as things may be for those pulling multiple 18 month tours in Iraq/Afghanistan, it’d be a LOT worse without logistics.
Just a guess (I have no real idea), but maybe she was responsible for the parachute packers, such that when the 101st Airborne dropped out of the sky, the pararchutes actually opened just prior to the MOST cristical time the chute should open?
I’m just wondering who’s ass would be on the line if there were a whole bevy of ‘chute failures.
Okay, somhow, Bush must be ripped apart for this. He’s received no credit for a multitude of firsts.
You don’t make stars by being a panty waist. I say congratulations to the general and we’ll see just how sexist the Democrats are.
Counterexample: Wesley Clark.
That’s what I was thinking, but my dad was in armor and artillery so I never dealt with any airborne aspects of the Army.
Low cut
Neither have most Generals.. not all, but most..
Its a political job mostly..
Hmmm. If she felt like it, she’d wear Army boots and you’d be wearing Army bootprints all over your a**.
And the Commander and Chief is a socialist globalist.. seeking to reduce a Republic into a Democracy.. and reduce Americas nationalist attitude into Mob Rule by mobsters.. or Democracy.. John McLaim is a craven traitor.. funded by George Soros.. and Tidewater Foundation(Teresa Heize-Kerry) and other leftist foundations..
All Generals and probably Admirals appointed in the 18 years are suspect.. especially the democrats..
Congratulations to the first female 4 star, General Ann E. Dunwoody, carrying on four generations tradition of service in the U.S. military. Our troops are truly the Finest of Americans, and the best in the world. HOOAH!
Sounding like a male who works in an airport transit wharehouse underneath a female foreman who can’t stand to either “work” or underneath a female superior in any fashion.
Your response has NOTHING to do with any logic pertaining to the appointment of the particular individual to the post in question.
True, but look at what was nominating then.
Still, he was a pretty boy, but at least had some cajones at one time, before joining the Democrat whiners.
That’s a tasteless comment.
You really show no class. The woman is a respected general, fighting to keep your ass alive.
Generals don't fight.. She is a legacy of Patty Schroeder(Col-d) enemy of the Republic..
I'm not a fan of affirmative action of either blacks or whites.. A four star general quartermaster is a bit much.. One star maybe but not four star...
What are you talking ‘bout?
Congratulations to General Dunwoody. Any of these missions, particularly in wartime are more difficult than most of these detractors can ever envision.
Project much? :eyeroll:
That’s the most ignorant thing ever posted here, and that’s saying a lot. I’m glad I don’t know you personally.
ignorant fools posting here
Congratulations, General.
I just don’t understand how that happened under a Republican administration. Sexists and all that, ya know!
Congratulations again, General Dunwoody!
Yes, I guess this sort of thing draws the ire of the underachievers.
You are not worthy to carry the name of "tired". Shame on you.
You are being way to kind to these idiots. Of course, if they can't be a success in their own, no reason to not denigrate those that can.
Non-serving asshats.
Women warriors are NOT a new phenomenon. Did you ever hear of Boudicca (ca. AD50), and the swordswomen of Fair Albion? Not myths, real people. How about the Israeli sabras? I know one personally, tougher than any 10 guys.
Harriet Tubman, after succeeding with the Underground Railroad, went on to become a spy and scout for the Union Army.
Female soldiers have sacrificed their lives in the War on Terror, Lori Piestewa being one example.
Women will do what women will do, can’t stop us. At least, not in this country.
As you are aware, our country was not an all-powerful great nation at birth; it has taken many years to get where it is, and to say other wise is incorrect and inaccurate.
Unfortunately for your thinking, life is not what it was when this country was founded, nor is the military. Today's military is extremely more powerful, mobile and multi-tasked then it was for the first "150 years".
Times change, as so do certain aspects of life; it is called adapting, something all armed forces must do in order to stay relevant.
The "first 150 years" were not wrong, they were right for the time period.
