John McCain's Vietnam jailer backs him

REPUBLICAN US presidential candidate John McCain has got some unexpected support from his former Vietnam War jailer, who said he would vote for the former navy pilot if he could.

Speaking to the BBC from Haiphong, Tran Trong Duyet also insisted that Senator McCain's assertions that he was tortured during his time at the prison were lies, and that no one held there was ever subjected to torture.

There is no doubt they were tortured although I read that after Ho Chi Minh died, they began to be treated better.

There are a thousand ways of defending your position, but relying on the outrageous lies of that Charlie Commie bastard camp officer reveals a lot about you. So you agree with him that no American was tortured in the Hanoi Hilton?

No one who has come upon the corpse of a former captive of the VC or NVA would ever believe the Communist bastards didn’t torture captives.

No one!

It makes me sick to think of the bullshit we’re putting our warriors though and the care we’re giving to “captives” - yet STILL the Left and World are being critical of us!

Where were this bastards in the 60’s and 70’s, when it was OUR guys being tortured?

Dear God, why are they printing this crap?

D**n Commies...

I honestly don’t know what world I’m living in anymore when a Communist prison guard gets press for their lies and propaganda. What is this like some kind of reverse psychology? The commie would vote for him? They know full well that this type of a story is intended to throw support over to Obama - the REAL marxist/communist.

And, you’re right - the left is going to eat this up and believe every word coming from these $&*#*%@#’s mouths (fill in the characters with the expletive of your choice). Makes me want to scream, I tell ya!

Seriously, is it just me, or is this election much worse than others in the past - as far as the propaganda and rhetoric, and the media? The first real election I remember was Reagan - were the elections back in the late 60s and early 70s like this?

[Apologies for the foul language, I know it’s not really lady-like, but, well, I’m seriously upset by this...]

Two thoughts - first, WTF’s with that “person” the jailer, - he’d vote for McCain “if he could” THEN calls him a liar??? What am I missing here?

second, if anyone in this election’s a Mancurian candidate, we should all know by now which one THAT is......

I have my doubts about McCain - he supports too many socialist inspired programs for my taste personally, but it’s pretty clear who the died in the wool radical marxist/communist is in this election. Don’t fall for their crap...

McCain on lower right

In August of 1968, a program of vigorous torture methods began on McCain, using rope bindings into painful positions and beatings every two hours, at the same time as he was suffering from dysentery.[84][79] Teeth and bones were broken again, as was McCain's spirit; the beginning of a suicide attempt was stopped by guards.[79] After four days of this, McCain signed and taped[94] an anti-American propaganda "confession" that said, in part, "I am a black criminal and I have performed the deeds of an air pirate. I almost died, and the Vietnamese people saved my life, thanks to the doctors."[79] He used stilted Communist jargon and ungrammatical language to signal that the statement was forced.[89]. Source

OK, so that's Senator McCain's story. Now here's what Obama's pal Bill Ayers and his slime ball friends were up to during this same time period...

November 22, 1970 -- During a fund-raising tour for GI deserters, Vietnam Veterans Against the War and the Black Panthers, Jane Fonda is quoted in the Detroit Free Press as telling a University of Michigan audience: "I would think that if you understood what communism was, you would hope, you would pray on your knees that we would someday become communist," and "The peace proposal of the Viet Cong is the only honorable, just, possible way to achieve peace in Vietnam."
Source: http://www.wintersoldier.com/index.php?topic=Timeline

Fonda made the following statement at the University of Texas: "We've got to establish a Socialist economic structure that will limit private profit-oriented businesses. Whether the transition is peaceful depends on the way our present governmental leaders react. We must commit our lives to this transition ...... We should be very proud of our new breed of soldier. It's not organized but it's mutiny, and they have every right."
--Karen Elliott Dallas Morning News December 11, 1971

From 1972: "I am not a do-gooder, I am a revolutionary. A revolutionary woman."

"It was at the Chicago home of [Bill] Ayers and [Bernardine] Dohrn that Obama, then an up-and-coming 'community organizer,' had his political coming out party in 1995. Not content with this rite of passage in Lefty World — where unrepentant terrorists are regarded as progressive luminaries, still working 'only to educate' — both Obamas tended to the relationship with the Ayers."

Allies in War
By David Horowitz
FrontPageMagazine.com | Monday, September 17, 2001:

ON THE MORNING OF THE ATTACKS on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, along with a million other readers of the New York Times including many who would never be able to read the paper again, I opened its pages to be confronted by a color photo showing a middle-aged couple holding hands and affecting a defiant look at the camera. The article was headlined in an irony that could not have been more poignant, "No Regrets For A Love Of Explosives."

The couple pictured were Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, former leaders of the 1960s’ Weather Underground, America’s first terrorist cult. One of their bombing targets, as it happened, was the Pentagon.

"I don’t regret setting bombs," Ayers was quoted in the opening line of the Times profile; "I feel we didn’t do enough."

In 1969, Ayers and his wife convened a "War Council" in Flint Michigan, whose purpose was to launch a military front inside the United States with the purpose of helping Third World [Maoist-communist] revolutionaries conquer and destroy it.

Taking charge of the podium, dressed in high-heeled boots and a leather mini-skirt – her signature uniform – Dorhn incited the assembled radicals to join the war against "Amerikkka" and create chaos and destruction in the "belly of the beast."

Her voice rising to a fevered pitch, Dohrn raised three fingers in a "fork salute" to mass murderer Charles Manson whom she proposed as a symbol to her troops. Referring to the helpless victims of the Manson Family as the "Tate Eight" (the most famous was actress Sharon Tate) Dohrn shouted:

"Dig It. First they killed those pigs, then they ate dinner in the same room with them, they even shoved a fork into a victim’s stomach! Wild!"

(big snip)

Today William Ayers is not merely an author favored by the New York Times, but a Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

His Lady Macbeth [Bernardine Dohrn] is not merely a lawyer, but a member of the American Bar Association’s governing elite, as well as the director of Northwestern University’s Children and Family Justice Center.

In 1976, the FBI's Chicago Field Office prepared a summary which described the activities of the Weather Underground Organization, also known as Weathermen. This organization described itself as a revolutionary organization of communist men and women. The FBI's analysis of its motivations, beliefs, and international travels are outlined in this summary.

[some excerpts from the 1976 report linking the organization to foreign governments...]

From the moment in October, 1967, when Radio Hanoi announced the formation of the South Vietnamese Peoples Committee for Solidarity with American People (by the National Liberation Front (NLF), the political arm of the Viet Cong) with the objective of establishing relations with "progressive organizations and individuals in the United States," a political front was enjoined in behalf of the national interests of the Democratic Republic of North Vietnam (DRV) (and the NLF), the purpose of which was to intensify the anti-war sentiment in the United States. From the initial meeting between the Vietnamese and leading anti-war activists held in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, in November, 1967, to the July, 1969, meeting with leading Weatherpeople held in Havana, Cuba, the influence of Vietnamese representatives on the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) leadership became sharply pronounced. At the same time, the example of the Cuban revolution became the guide for the emerging American student revolutionary. With an increasing number of trips to Havana where the youthful revolutionary could learn at first hand how to create revolution, the influence of Cuba on the developing WUO [Weather Underground Organization] was enormous.

The WUO obtained their revolutionary methodology from the Cubans and Vietnamese and, importantly, put into practice what they had learned from them. The Weathermen, of course, did not just happen to come about during the June, 1969, SDS National Convention. They fully admit their radical heritage began during experiences gained in SDS and as shown herein their international contacts with representatives of the DRV and NLF which began in 1967 increased their anti-imperialist consciousness so that by 1969 they had solidified their revolutionary commitment to include the maximum optimum of armed struggle. So, when Huynh Van Ba, representative of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of Vietnam (PRG), instructed the WUO to "look for the person who fights hardest against the cops...Don't look for the one who says the best thing. Look for the one who fights," the campus base was forgotten and the WUO began to recruit the greasers and assorted oddments who had displayed their hatred of authority in direct combat with police.

From David Horowitz's FrontPageMag.com/DiscoverTheNetworks.org:
March 6, 1970: "three members of the Weather Underground accidentally killed themselves in a Manhattan townhouse while attempting to build a powerful bomb they had intended to plant at a social dance in Fort Dix, New Jersey -- an event that was to be attended by U.S. Army soldiers. Hundreds of lives could have been lost had the plot been successfully executed."
http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/groupProfile.asp?grpid=6808

"The bomb was intended to be planted at a non-commissioned officer's dance at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
The bomb was packed with nails to inflict maximum casualties upon detonation."

Bill Ayers TODAY (April 6, 2008), from his own red communist star-headed website, begging to debate communism vs capitalism with Sean Hannity and STILL calling for revolution!

"Imperialism. I’m against it, and if Sean Hannity and others were honest, this is the ground they would fight me on. Capitalism played its role historically and is exhausted as a force for progress: built on exploitation, theft, conquest, war, and racism, capitalism and imperialism must be defeated and a world revolution—a revolution against war and racism and materialism, a revolution based on human solidarity and love, cooperation and the common good —must win.

We begin by releasing our most hopeful dreams and our most radical imaginations: a better world is both possible and necessary.

I read a book by Erich Hartmann, the all time ace of aces. He was captured by the Communists after WWII and was regularly tortured.

A strange thing is he says he was never beaten. They had a law which said they couldn't beat prisoners so they didn't. Of course torturing is even worse.

Now I suspect the Vietnamese had no rules at all except maybe keep them alive as long as it benefited them to do so.

If course, which explains why he got back and couldn't even raise his arm over his head.

and negates all the other testimonies from the other officers that were held prisoner with him - and also were subject to torture.

So who do we believe = this guard or one of our most decorated and admired military men, the man that shared a cell and torture with McCain: Col. Day, the most decorated service man since Gen. Douglas MacArthur, with more than 70 medals?

excerpts of what Col. Day says:

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/05/08/mccains-former-hanoi-cell-mate-describes-character-in-deplorable-conditions/

"Day said the first time he saw McCain, he believed the future senator was close to death and that the only reason for the chance encounter was part of a Vietnamese ploy to break the morale of U.S. servicemen already in captivity.

“I took one look at him, and my brain instantly said, ‘They dropped this guy off on me to claim that we let him die,’” Day said. “He was just emaciated. Very, very skinny, in this full body cast. Just filthy.”

The U.S. soldiers were held sometimes five to a cell, barely big enough for two.

“He had this gimpy knee where he’d busted his knee, this arm had been fractured in a couple places, he’d been bayoneted in the leg, this arm was out at the shoulder and, in fact, during that time it was out at the shoulder so long it wore a hole in this bone,” Day said.

During captivity, they were tortured mercilessly, Day said, describing one tactic that McCain has also recalled.

“They roped me under the arms, tied my hands behind my back, ran another rope to that, got me up on a chair, threw that rope up over a rafter and jerked the chair out from under me and your own weight just tears your body apart,” he said.

Day’s broken arm was re-broken during torture so he would never fly again. McCain played physical therapist.

“John said, ‘Well we’ll gather up some bamboo, and he was in a bandage on his leg at that time. So I got some strips of bamboo, smuggled them into the room, John put his foot in my arm pit and pulled on my wrist ’till we could get the bone forced back down … it wasn’t exactly perfect but it worked out he got it back to where it was functional,” Day said.

...“John would help me. … John would pull my fingers out straight. They would just instantly recurl. And finally, one morning, I had just the slightest bit of movement in this hand — finger — and we both cried,” Day said.

McCain, whose military record was released to the Associated Press on Wednesday, received 17 commendations over his career from 1951-81. They included the Silver Star for his conduct in captivity. He also received the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Bronze Star.

Day said by any humane standard, McCain would have been a good candidate for early release from the camp, but that wasn’t in his playbook.

“It also wasn’t in his playbook to die. In fact he quickly became a leader.”

Can you picture obamiation in those circumstances?

You’re welcome. I just wish Hannity, Limbaugh, Ingram and O’Reilly would use more of this damaging information against Obama. For example, I don’t think Hannity has once told his audience that Bill Ayers and his Weather Underground were a communist organization, never mind that they actually met and were trained by the KGB, also the North Vietnamese and Cuban governments. For that matter, I can’t recall Limbaugh ever doing it either. O’Reilly and Laura Ingram are even more clueless on these issues. Same goes for Rev Wright’s Black Liberation Theology. Other than that one special Friday night edition of Hannity’s America (the one I posted a partial transcript of), Hannity has completely ignored the fact that BLT is a revolutionary communist ideology which only uses religion as a means to promote hatred, division and revolutionary sentiment. He seems to have totally forgotten what he learned on his own previous program. The others are even worse, having not once, to my knowledge, ever informed their audiences of the true nature of BLT. How in hell can we defeat these bastards if we continue ignoring such powerful information as this. I mean, even the dopiest democrat, would HAVE to wake up and see how dangerous these people really are.

Hannity is a joke!
He is WAY over his head, assuming the role of “Champion of the Right”....
He’s doing battle, unarmed in the battle of wits.

His heart may be in the right place, but battles are won by those with WEAPONS.
Hannity simply can’t or won’t grab the jugular and pull it towards him with enough force to dispatch the enemy.

In fact - I doubt there is any other program on TV, beside BOR who invites the major $%#$# like Sharpton, Jackson, or some wannabe “soldier” from the Black Panthers or “Nation of Islam”...
Why give these bastards the camera time - if you’re not going to tear their silly $#@ up?

By weakly playing the role of “conservative” against the aggressive “Leftist” Colmes -— it results in a net negative for conservatives...

The MOST effective, intelligent and aggressive TV host is without question -— Laura Ingram.
Of all the others — I would prefer Laura in my fighting position. (For lots of reasons!)

The MOST effective, intelligent and aggressive TV host is without question -— Laura Ingram. Of all the others — I would prefer Laura in my fighting position. (For lots of reasons!)

From a previously posted response which I saved...

None of the right-wing talk show hosts seem to know beans about the communist left. Laura Ingram, for example, once interviewed Leslie Cagan (national coordinator of United for Peace and Justice) on her radio show and didn't once ask her about her communist leanings and overall anti-American views. She didn't even get the name of the org right (she called them United for Justice and Peace). And this was around the time of the 2004 Republican convention in New York City, when UFPG staged a 500,000-strong protest outside New York City's Madison Square Garden, site of the 2004 convention.

Cagan is a longtime supporter of communist causes and a devoted admirer of Fidel Castro. She also started up an org called Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism. CCDS is an old offshoot of Communist Party USA. The vice chair of CPUSA (Judith LeBlanc) is the co-chair of United for Peace and Justice.

More recently, while subbing for O'Reilly, Ingram had on the Factor a young woman named Sunsara Taylor. Talyor is a leading spokesperson for the org World Can't Wait--Drive Out the Bush Regime. World Can't Wait is a well known front for the Revolutionary Communist Party. She also regularly writes for the RCP newspaper 'Revolution' and goes around college and high school campuses attempting to indoctrinate young naive kids into the movement. Laura Ingram, seeming not to have a clue in the world who Taylor was and what she truly represented, never once confronted her on these matters. And WCW and UFPJ are both huge and highly influential organizations.

From the Communist Party USA website, cpusa.org:
Texas Trail, 05/29/2008
"Texas Trail" was a production of Changing America. In this documentary, shot during the 2000 presidential election campaign. Judith LeBlanc (vice chair Communist Party USA) and Noel Robinowitz (Communist Party USA IT department) travel to Texas to discover the background and record of a then unknown Texas governor named George W. Bush.

Whitewashing Reds
By Cliff Kincaid
Accuracy In Media (AIM)
April 23, 2003

"New York bureau chief of the Washington Post, tried to explain why he failed to note in an April 17 puff piece about anti-war organizer Leslie Cagan that she is a co-chair of a group called the 'Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism.'

But he left out something even more important—that the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism (CCDS) is an offshoot of the old Moscow-controlled Communist Party USA (CPUSA). 'I call her a leftist,' Powell protested, as if that were an accurate and complete characterization of Cagan’s ideology.

Powell, a reporter for the paper that broke open the Watergate scandal, apparently could not find it within his power or ability to reveal that Cagan is a co-chair of a group dominated by former veteran CPUSA members such as Angela Davis. The CCDS Web site refers to the Communist Manifesto as a 'stirring document' that is relevant today.

Powell’s article did acknowledge that International ANSWER, the Workers World Party (WWP) front group behind several Washington, D.C. protests, was a 'Marxist-Leninist grouping that glorifies North Korea...' But he then ignored the hard evidence of Cagan’s communist connections and travels to Cuba. It’s clear that Powell was trying to present Cagan, the head of a rival anti-war group called United For Peace and Justice, as a more responsible activist without the WWP baggage. He could only do that by insulating Cagan from the taint of communism or even socialism."

Los Angeles riots of 1992:
"[Maxine] Waters has been criticized for her comments regarding the Los Angeles riots of 1992. In defense of the people that looted stores and damaged property, Waters said 'If you call it a riot it sounds like it was just a bunch of crazy people who went out and did bad things for no reason. I maintain it was somewhat understandable, if not acceptable. So I call it a rebellion.'[5] She also said it was 'a spontaneous reaction to a lot of injustice' and 'The anger in my district is righteous. I'm just as angry as they are.' She responded to the mass looting of Korean-owned stores by saying: 'There were mothers who took this as an opportunity to take some milk, to take some bread, to take some shoes. They are not crooks. Everybody in the street was not a thug or a hood.'"

From David Horowitz's FrontpageMag.com /DiscoverTheNetworks.org:
"Throughout its history, one of RCP's [Revolutionary Communist Party] principal objectives has been to foment civil unrest in the United States. The most notable example of such efforts occurred on April 29, 1992, when RCP members looted and trashed the downtown and government districts of Los Angeles, triggering the infamous Rodney King riots. During the days immediately preceding the violence, RCP -- which maintained close ties to the L.A. gangs known as the Crips and the Bloods -- had circulated throughout South Central Los Angeles a leaflet featuring a statement by RCP National Spokesman Carl Dix, titled 'It's Right To Rebel' -- a quote popularized by Mao Zedong.

Encouraged by Dix, RCP activists helped lead the riots that would leave 58 people dead, more than 2,300 people injured, some 5,300 buildings burned, and $1 billion in property damaged or destroyed. On the ten-year anniversary of the rioting, RCP member Joseph Veale fondly recalled the violence as 'the most beautiful, the most heroic civil action in the history of the United States.'"
http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/groupProfile.asp?grpid=6197

"The RCP upheld the 1992 sometimes-violent unrest in Los Angeles and nationally as a 'rebellion' in the aftermath of the Rodney King verdicts. Then-LAPD chief Daryl Gates alleged that the RCP was involved in the 'riots'. Los Angeles has long been one of the RCP's larger and more active branches. William 'Mobile' Shaw was a local leader who recently passed and received public commendation from the party."

And we have said that building our party itself is the most important part of organizing forces for revolution. I have also wondered why BOR and H&C keep inviting the likes of Rev. Sharpton.

However, Dan Abrams is even worse. He - and CNN also - have invited the sleazy Willie Brown, a strong defender of Rev. Jim Jones, as an "expert" TH. BTW, Brown called press criticism of Jones as, among others, "racist."

Dan Abrams and Olberman have become increasingly shrill and full of envy as they attack FOX News and Lou Dobbs on CNN.

It always seemed more than strange that McCain would want to have a reunion with his former captors - people who he said tortured him, and a friendly one at that. Recently Cindy went to visit Vietnam. Not the way a normal person would have behaved.

Did you sign up on FRee Republic just to bash McCain?

Oh, definitely NOT!!! In fact, when I was a few weeks newer here, a lady (?) on here really let me have it because I’ve been SUPPORTING JS McCain!

If you’ve read any (or more) of my previous posts, I’m obsessive about how extremely dangerous b. hussein obama is!!!

gee, sorry you misunderstood. While I would love to see a more conservative candidate as our nominee, in light of what we’re up against, McCain is our best hope of all to (hopefully) defeat the Enemy, BHO, because he appeals to the broadest base of voters.

Believe me, I consistently try to point out the good things about JSM to many here who don’t like him at all, but I’ve always been a glass is half-full person, focusing on the positives, and there are several about JSM - my own #1 priority (as I’ve often said) is national security/foreign policy. I just pray that he’ll beat b. hussein AND that he’ll make this issue his own #1 priority - we’re going to need it.

You are right.

But we are yet in the dreg-days of "affirmative action" in public conversations. Should there be a special investigative report done via visual media on say, Black Liberation Theology, you-know-who would pull out the stops and DEMAND the network offer free "equal" time to the opposing point of view, which would amount to a recruitment drive FOR (say) Black Liberation Theology.

During the 90s, literacy was below the visual charts in re pub ed students and scores. So, conservatives fought to bring back literacy to the spotlight in public education.

Communists figured massive retaliation, and so they agreed Literacy should be foremost! And thus began the proliferation of multi-culturalistic "literacy" as goals in the schools.

Science and math are now forgotten subjects at many pub ed schools; the Communists figure to agree, and they now are promoting Global Warming as their programs for improving science and math in the schools. Prior to the drop in math and science, the communists had "rainforest" math and science as their banner, but conservatives once again proved that students graduating from schools which taught "rainforest math" couldn't do basic math. Hence, the drop. Now, watch "science" become the goal, as communists agree with conservatives as to the importance of science and math.

The whirled spins.

By my estimates, we are currently in the "sound byte" wars. A stage which precipitates the next "achievement" benchmark to be attained to.

By this, I mean to commiserate with your lament; but to exhort you to recall that those who are truly looking for information and answers, still do and can find those of a like kind who are either providing or looking for the same information.

Communists are dangerous? No kidding.

If it weren't for our Constitution, and our civility here in the U.S., we'd all see very clearly the enemies of America far more clearly; more openly.

But our constitution details very specific freedoms which includes the freedom to see those enemies or not.

Come November, we shall all see a very specific thing about the people called Americans, and what they do or do not see.

It’s a perfect propaganda ploy: claim to be on someone’s side and then question their honesty.

Moreso, it gave that jailer one more chance to injure John McCain.

If one thinks about it, this carefully crafted attack on McCain is PROOF that he was tortured.

I mean, even the dopiest democrat, would HAVE to wake up and see how dangerous these people really are.

I appreciate your frustrations but I don’t think Rush or the others specifically identifying Ayers and Dohrn and Wright as communists (BTW, the Weather Underground was also funded by the KGB via World Peace Council) would make much difference. You and I already understand Obama is a cutout for Marxist revolutionaries but most of his supporters don’t really care that much. The American people are on a collision course with communism and will find out for themselves what it is. On our side of the aisle all we need do is get our act together and in 4 years be ready to drive a stake through the heart of American communism. Remember, this is a form of government that ALWAYS fails.

I am pretty sure that McCain spoke about Earl Cobeil They flogged him to death. The bloody B@st@rds.

After “Fidel” failed in having any of his group released, the “Cuba Program” continued without any real purpose or meaning. Two weeks later I moved to another room with Paul Schultz. I rarely saw “Fidel” again, except on one or two occasions. “Fidel” had been working with some other men and it appeared that one of them, Earl Cobeil, was resisting “Fidel” to the maximum. Of course, “Fidel” was retaliating. Several days after I was moved, Earl Cobeil was moved in with Don Waltman into the room next to mine. Waltman said Earl was all mixed up in his mind. On one occasion, one of the guards, Grimsey, came to the shower area and took us back to our room. “Fidel” was standing at the door. All three of us lined up. I had moved into this room with Waltman and Cobeil. We went to the shower, then we came back. So Waltman and I bowed, but Cobeil just stood there again. I said, “Hey, Cobeil, bow.” Nothing happened. Suddenly Grimsey raised his leg and pushed his foot against Cobeil¹s body, who went tumbling over toward the back of the room. “Fidel” yelled loudly at Cobeil to stop cheating him or he would teach him a lesson he would never forget. The door closed.

After having seen “Fidel” for almost every day for six months, I knew that “Fidel” was going to get his way. He was not going to let the Vietnamese see him fail in any endeavor. I was convinced that he would take a man to any length to get what he wanted. In addition, the difference between the Vietnamese and “Fidel” was that more or less once the Vietnamese got what they wanted they let up at least for awhile. Not so with “Fidel.” There wasn’t a day that went by that there weren’t threats or warnings to all of us. I was in this room with Cobeil and Waltman now; and for the rest of the quiet hour, Waltman and I tried everything imaginable to get Cobeil to come down to earth, but we were unsuccessful. Shortly after the gong sounded ending the quiet hour, “Fidel” came to the door and told me to come outside. “Fidel” asked me if Cobeil was squared away. I told him that in my honest opinion, Cobeil was not at all rational; if he continued working Cobeil over, Cobeil would never make it. I was hopeful that he would believe me about Cobeil.

He accused me of trying to help Cobeil cheat him. The door was closed, locked, and bolted. I started to talk to Cobeil again for a few minutes, when all of a sudden, “Fidel” jumped up in the window, holding the bars, screaming in his loud voice, “I caught you, I caught you cheating me.” Seconds later the door slammed open. “Fidel” screamed to me, get out, get out. A few minutes later “Fidel” returned with what looked like a fan belt of a car, but cut so it was like a whip. As “Fidel” passed by he looked at me with a glaze in his eyes of an enraged madman. “Fidel” went in after Cobeil with Grimsey and Cedric. I could hear the thud of the belt against Cobeil’s body again and again as “Fidel” screamed. I guess Cobeil was hit around 20 or 30 times. It was hard to listen, as I did, to “Fidel” beating Cobeil, a frail, diminutive man, his wrists swollen three times the normal size, a vacant stare in his eyes already pushed by torture beyond the limit for which he might have a chance to regain his sanity. It had been far easier for me to endure the straps than to have to go through this. The guards all stood around talking loudly, laughing and yelling in Vietnamese. When I saw “Fidel” with the fan belt, I was sur-prised, because up to that time I had never heard of anyone getting hit like that. As I stood there with my crutches, my heart and mind overflowed with emotion. It was the most sickening feeling to hear what was going on and know there was nothing I could do about it.

That was the last day I saw Cobeil. “Fidel” unmercifully beat a mentally defenseless, sick man to death. He, as well as the North Vietnamese Communists, must bear full responsibility for that and other acts

In Feb the BBC was playing the line that the Cubans were not involved in torturing our POW's.

That with Gore Vidals recent comments sends up red flags, real red flags that this is a concerted effort to put into question his time while a POW.

Regarding the treatment of POWs in North Vietnam, the following is from Over The Beach, The Air War in Vietnam by Zalin Grant, 1986.

“The Cuban (Yes, a Cuban guest torturer) took on the Baron (a USAF Major) as a special project. He intended to break him bad. His prestige as Comrade Big Brother was on the line. He tortured Baron and took him to a room we called the coal bin, on the other side of the camp. He tied him up the same way they did me (Lt. Chuck Rice USN) my first day and left him like that overnight. Another POW held in the next cell heard what happened.

Baron screamed all night, the POW said, until three in the morning. Then he stopped, didn’t make a further sound. Next morning, when the Cuban and the Vietnamese came, they were visibly stunned by what they found. Baron looked seventy years old. His hair had turned white overnight. He had snapped his wire and became a doddering old man . . .

He came back, his eyes blank and lie in the fetal position. We had to force feed him, but he fought and lost weight, down to about 90 pounds. Finally they took him out of our room and put him in solitary. We kept up with him for a while but eventually lost track. He died around Christmas 1970.”

I am merely repeating what others have pointed out: Would a sane person want to hold a reunion with people who tortured him? Why did McCain refuse to press war crimes charges against his captors? McCain's attitude towards the families of POW and MIA was awful. If there is a good explanation I have not heard it.
