Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family -- who has stayed unusually quiet in this election cycle likely due to his loathing of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. -- will tomorrow attack Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, on Tuesday for a speech the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee delivered in 2006 to the liberal Christian group Call to Renewal.
The AP was given an advance copy of Dobson's 18-minute radio segment, which has already been taped, and will air Tuesday.
In it, Dobson hammers Obama's views of religion, and says the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee is trying to govern by the "lowest common denominator of morality," and calls Obama's views "a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution."
Obama's original speech, delivered on June 28, 2006, (you can listen to it HERE) started with a discussion of his 2004 Senate opponent, Alan Keyes, who said that "Jesus Christ would not vote for Barack Obama."
Obama said that he "was urged by some of my liberal supporters not to take this statement seriously, to essentially ignore it .But what they didn't understand, however, was that I had to take Mr. Keyes seriously, for he claimed to speak for my religion, and my God. He claimed knowledge of certain truths." Moreover, "Keyes's implicit accusation that I was not a true Christian nagged at me."
The speech delves into Obama's view of the constructive role religion plays in society, beseeching "work that progressive leaders need to do" on the subject, followed by his views of "what conservative leaders need to do -- some truths they need to acknowledge."
That included "the critical role that the separation of church and state has played in preserving not only our democracy, but the robustness of our religious practice," Obama said, as well as "the increasing diversity of America's population, the dangers of sectarianism have never been greater. Whatever we once were, we are no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers."
"And even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama asked. "Would we go with James Dobson's, or Al Sharpton's? Which passages of Scripture should guide our public policy? Should we go with Leviticus, which suggests slavery is ok and that eating shellfish is abomination? How about Deuteronomy, which suggests stoning your child if he strays from the faith? Or should we just stick to the Sermon on the Mount - a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application? So before we get carried away, let's read our bibles. Folks haven't been reading their bibles."
Dobson responds, per the AP, that "I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology" and charges that Obama "is dragging Biblical understanding through the gutter."
"Am I required in a democracy to conform my efforts in the political arena to his bloody notion of what is right with regard to the lives of tiny babies?" Dobson asks. "What he's trying to say here is unless everybody agrees, we have no right to fight for what we believe."
In response to Dobson's comments, Joshua DuBois, national director of religious affairs for the Obama campaign responded in a statement: "Barack Obama is committed to reaching out to people of faith and standing up for American families, and a full reading of his 2006 Call to Renewal speech shows just that. Obama is proud to have the support of millions of Americans of faith and looks forward to working across religious lines to bring our country together."
P.S. Look at how he is looking at Dick Cheney in that pic!
You cannot be Pro-abortion and be a Christian. But taken a step further...Pro-abortionists are linked to evil.
You know the old joke: If you call a pig’s tail a leg, how many legs would the pig have? The answer is four - calling a tail a leg doesn’t turn it into a leg.
Then there’s this one: Sitting in church won’t make you a Christian any more than sitting in a garage will make you a car.
I'll bet it did!
Dodson to Attack Obama Tuesday for Distorting the Bible. The Bible is about as foreign to him as his Law books are. He hasn’t opened them in a long, long while. He knows just enough to get himself in trouble. Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. And he most certainly has not heard the Word of God preached in his Church Ever!
Coming together is on their terms.Coming together means we all get to STFU and do what we're told and pay more taxes and drive no more cars and heat no more houses and bow when the High and Mighty drive down the street in their limos and, above all (I may have already mentioned this) STFU and do what we're told.
Under the bus...
Thank God.
“Distorting the Bible?”
Isn’t the purpose of Dobson’s brand of ‘Christianity’ that anybody can interpret the Bible without the guidance of religious authority?
Jim Dob can take his brown nose and take a hike. McCain has shown he is not needed and now this clown is just trying to stay relevant. Hey howabout a photo-op where you can roll around on the floor or speak in tongues or something. It would be just about as authentic.
“Isnt the purpose of Dobsons brand of Christianity that anybody can interpret the Bible without the guidance of religious authority?”
What’s that? (Use The Bible for you answer)
Dobson's own hand and mouth helped bring about the McCain nomination. I guess what goes around really does come around eh, James?
I like that.
“That” is obviously anything he says. And anything I or you say for that matter—a personal interpretation.
And thus, not much of an institution.
Bingo!

So he opposed McCain. Big deal.
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=53743
So did a lot of Conservatives, and many still do.
Dobson has accomplished quite a lot in his life and his ministry has done wonderful things.
That is obviously anything he says. And anything I or you say for that mattera personal interpretation.
And thus, not much of an institution.’
Oh. So - - - institutions are the final authority?
No. But an institution creates a set of common beliefs.
Instead of making it up as one goes along.
Point taken. I’m sure he has done good with his ministry. Reacting more to his attempt to reinsert himself. Seems like he regrets his earlier remarks (now that he is not part of the discussion) and is trying to sneak back into the picture.
If I’m McCain I leave this guy in the basement. Where he put himself.
“No. But an institution creates a set of common beliefs.
Instead of making it up as one goes along.”
Oh. Who does that?
It’s unfortunate the Dobson has jettisoned his expertise in psychology to remain in the political arena.
He could remain a positive resource for those with personal and family concerns.
Too bad.
Oh, I believe there was that guy in Oklahoma who claimed that God put a bounty on his life that others had to pay (to his University I think it was); there was that nice man from Ferriday, La (the cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis, I believe) who claimed that a street hooker in his car was really—the Devil, who had fooled him with magic; there is that guy in Tidewater, Viriginia who claims to be able to leg lift some 500+ lbs. (or thereabouts) because of Holy Spirits, etc...
Could go on, but you get the point. I know a few bad apples are not representative—
but, I ain’t sticking my hand in that barrell.
Interesting, but I think we’re off the subject.
Dobson is certainly right about Obama distorting the bible. Obama actaully said that the Sermon on the Mount somehow gave credence to same-sex marriages “and was more important than some obscure verse from Romans.” So, Obama twisted the words of Jesus at the same time belittling the great Apostle to the Gentiles, St. Paul.
Obama is the most arrogant politician I have ever seen in my life!!!!
Outrageous statement....
?????...uh...No!
Pro-”choice” = pro choosing evil.
When referring to saving the life of a baby that was “accidentally” born alive
as “too much of a burden on a woman”,
Obama has exposed his evil pragmatist beliefs.
The institution (the church) provides 2000 years of study, teachings, and traditions concerning the interpretation, meaning and implementation of Scripture in our personal and common life.
If I say that a Gospel teaching is something different than that commonly believed over the years, than I may want to reexamine my position.
The sad splits that appear among believers today can also be found in history.
When I first became a Christian (when Jesus became Lord of my life at age 35---even though I had been in church since infancy)...
Dobson's daily radio ministry was an integral influence in my growth & maturity.
His daily 'guests' & his own words brought a panarama of colors to my Christian experience...
My children loved his Adventures in Odyssey....actually, we all loved it and would stop our day to listen.....(it was a kid's program, although very unique and wonderful)
He exemplified & still does, core Christian values and high standards.
I am indepted to him for giving a focus to our family's growth.
That's a few of many many reasons I love him and will defend him every time someone says something against him.
His whole life has been to love and glorify God....
I fail at this....but, IMO, he doesn't and he hasn't....even though he is human.
Just wanted you to know my perspective.
“The institution (the church) provides 2000 years of study, teachings, and traditions concerning the interpretation, meaning and implementation of Scripture in our personal and common life.”
What church?
Jesus wasn’t a black, whitey-hater???
Great point.
There are no surprises at all in Obama's "theology." This is exactly what in preached to all United Church of Christ congregations, not just at Trinity.
I encountered the stench of this evil during the fight in the Episcopal church over the gay bishop. It was very tiresome how the gay advocates would trot out the same old arguments every time. It got to be where one could easily script a speech for them - "Bible bad, used for slavery; Bible bad - used to put woman down; SHELLFISH!"
Evil really is banal, boring and infantile.
You mentioned that Obama hasn't opened a law book for a long time. Did you know that some of our top law schools are no longer using law books? It's true, there was an article in the WSJ, back in March, about Yale switching from studying precedent to a sort of, on the job training, for law school. Harvard and the University of WA has already made the switch. They now just give the kids a subscription to lexis-nexis and turn them loose in a court room. This has so many ramifications for the futue of our legal system, that it is unbelievable, but the reason for it is affirmative action. Many of the affirmative action students are not capable of memorizing the vast amounts of precedent that exists, let alone understanding it. So now, whenever you hire a young lawyer, each case will be sort of an open book case. Oh, I forgot to mention that the lowest grade that a student in the law school at the University of WA can receive is a B+, because there is nothing really to grade.
If BHO wins in Nov he is a very strong candidate indeed.
He was Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Southern California School of Medicine for 14 years.
He spent 17 years on the staff of the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
And he started Focus on the Family (founded in 1977)....which now has a political arm and can and does respond to political ideas.
Focus on the Family has millions of loyal listeners.
You may not like this or like him, but these are the facts
“No. But an institution creates a set of common beliefs.
Instead of making it up as one goes along.”
What any institution is pretty irrelevant, according to my Bible. The book of Galatians talks plenty about that.
Does that mean that churches don’t ever get it right? Of course, not. I just don’t need someone to tell me what the Bible says. I can open it and read it myself. I suspect James Dobson is pretty good at that, too. I would also suspect that he doesn’t come away with any bizarre notions about what it says, unlike Barack Obama(who I would guess doesn’t really ever read the Bible anyway).
Hussein Obama is a sadly deceived individual who has no business whatsoever being the next POTUS.
Im an ordained minister and Im not going to say that a person is not a born-again Christian if they vote along the lines of the Democrat party platform (pro-abortion, pro-gay unions, pro-gun control), but I will say that if they do, they are against God and His commands, extremely immature in the faith, they have sided with the devils agenda, and are astonishingly ignorant of the what the Bible says.
Lets just look at one example of Biblical truth as it relates to murdering innocent children through abortion as defined by the Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary.
ABORTION
The Bible places a high value on all human life, including that of the unborn. Biblical teaching declares that life is a sacred, God-given gift (Gen. 1:26-27; 2:7; Deut. 30:15-19; Job 1:21; Ps. 8:5; 1 Cor. 15:26), especially the life of children (Ps. 127:3-5; Luke 18:15-16), and condemns those who take it away (Exod. 20:13; 2 Kings 1:13; Amos 1:13-14). The development of unborn life is controlled by God (Job 31:15; Ps. 139:13-16; Eccles. 11:5; Isa. 44:2; 46:3; 49:5; Jer. 1:5; Luke 1:15; Gal. 1:15). The personhood of the fetus is clearly taught in Exod. 21:22 where the unborn is called a child (yeled) rather than a fetus (nephel or golem). Hos. 9:11 implies that life begins at conception, while Luke 1:41,44 recognizes the consciousness of an unborn child.
The high value placed on unborn human life in the Bible is consistent with the Mosaic law regarding negligent miscarriage (Exod. 21:22-25). This law can be compared to similar statutes in the Code of Hammurabi (nos. 209-214) in which the punishment exacted for acts of negligence that resulted in a womans miscarriage was dependent on the legal or social status of the mother, not the personhood (or supposed lack thereof) of her unborn child. Middle Assyrian law no. 53 (12th century b.c.) made a self-induced miscarriage (an abortion) a capital offense.
I could go on and on but you get my drift. There is NO WAY that a true, mature, born-again Christian who has a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ can possibly vote for the Satanic, demonic, Democrat party agenda of death, destruction, socialism, and ultimately communism. Jesus Christ never would support this, nor should his followers.
Republican and conservative ideals are not perfect but they do match FAR BETTER with Biblical principles. They do respect the sanctity of life, believe that marriage is between one man and one woman, believe in the right of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms, and believe the U.S. Constitution is not open for compromise.
Barak Hussein Obama is in the simplest terms a pawn of Satan, foolishly attempting to do his bidding to the detriment of our nation - and needs to be recognized as such.
Should be:
“What any institution has to say is pretty irrelevant...”
well said!
James Dobson went on national television and spat out his disapproval at almost visceral hatred level of Fred Thompson as an early candidate, in addition to publically questioning his Christianity. Fred was probably one of two true conservatives running counting Hunter.
Dobson stepped way over his political knowlege and expertise. Frankly, he showed his own hypocrisy, I’ll never hold the same amount of respect for the man, if any at all.
Hence, I hope he’s happy with McCain.
Over many years, I have listened to, watched, and enjoyed live & in person the words of James Dobson and I have never experienced a level of 'visceral hatred' from this man.
It was a TV news show broadcast. If you want a link that describes his spewing and FReeper reaction, search old Fred Thompson articles.
Anyone that listens to what James Dodson said about Obama and the Bible should remember what Dr. Bruce Prescott of Mainstream Baptists Oklahoma (and a member of the Americans United Board of Trustees), said about him: “Only a fundamentalist demagogue who has made a career of ‘manipulating’ and ‘brainwashing’ people to read the Bible through medieval lenses could find cartoon characters teaching tolerance so threatening.” ( he was refering to s spongebob / winnie the pooh, barney cartoon about tolerance)
Key word “demagogue”
I've never heard of Bruce Prescott, but this nation and many others have heard of James Dobson...
He who honors me, I will honor
This is James Dobson's legacy.
