BEIJING Chinese authorities in the restive far western region of Xinjiang have demolished a mosque for refusing to put up signs in support of this Augusts Beijing Olympics, an exiled group said on Monday. The mosque was in Kalpin county near Aksu city in Xinjiangs rugged southwest, the World Uyghur Congress said. The spokesmans office of the Xinjiang government said it had no immediate comment, while telephone calls to the county government went unanswered. China is forcing mosques in East Turkistan to publicise the Beijing Olympics to get the Uighur people to support the Games (but) this has been resisted by the Uighurs, World Uyghur Congress spokesman Dilxat Raxit said in an emailed statement. Beijing says Al-Qaeda is working with militants in Xinjiang to use terror to establish an independent state called East Turkistan.

Beijing says Al-Qaeda is working with militants in Xinjiang to use terror to establish an independent state called East Turkistan. For some reason, I don't think the results that Al-Qaeda is looking for will come to pass. In fact, I think they will be crushed ash when this is done.

My question is what kind of govt. tries to require religious structures to display govt. propaganda in the first place, whether for the olympics or anything else?

A pox on both. Ideally, we could get a low grade war started between the ROP and the ChiComms. In which case, I’d advocate that we sell weapons and intel to both sides.

I trust the spokesman of the muslim separatist political movement as far as I can throw him. Which is to say not very far as I have flabby arms and throw like a girl.
If a mosque was demolished, rest assured that there were other causes other than failure to promote the Olympics. Contrary to some of the more ignorant commenters here, the government of China generally tends to work to appease muslim sentiments. They don’t actively court ethnic unrest, but should it occur, they are not above busting heads.

A totalitarian one.
On a separate note, does anyone know the origin of the American custom of having a US flag in church (or at least the ones I’ve been to). I’ve never found this elsewhere internationally.

Does a true “Hobson’s choice” ever exist though?
the whole “equally objectionable” concept really can’t be met.
However, there is a psychological concept of choosing between two objectionable alternatives, and the closer you get to one, the more objectionable it gets, so you move to the other one, and the process repeats.
