Protesters want legislative pay raises vetoed (Jindal heckled - JindalWatch® Alert)
KTBS-TV3 ^ | June 24, 2008 | Staff

Posted on 06/24/2008 12:09:42 PM PDT by abb

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, in Shreveport for a ceremonial signing of a tax cut bill passed by the Legislature, was met today by protesters upset over state lawmakers doubling their pay and the governor's decision not to veto it.

Residents around the state want the governor to veto the pay raise bill. Jindal said he thinks the raise is a bad idea but he won't veto it, saying the Legislature should deal with the consequences of its actions.

Jindal went to Chamber of Commerce Plaza in downtown Shreveport at noon today for a ceremonial signing of a bill sponsored by Sen. B.L. Shaw of Shreveport that does away with the tax increases that arose out of the so-called Stelly Plan, which changed income tax brackets in return for doing away with the state sales tax on groceries.

"The easiest thing for me would be veto it," Jindal said to cheers. "I would be the most popular governor in the state's history."

He was heckled by one man when he added, "I don't want to give legislators or anybody else an excuse to slow down the reforms that ar so important for our state."

"You promised to veto!" the heckler said.

The protesters were outside with signs when the governor arrived. They were allowed inside the Chamber of Commerce building for the governor's appearance.

Then he is an IDIOT for not fighting them on it.

Hmm. Clever. Now we get to wait and see if the Dems get voted out of their state offices, and Jindal can get some Repub legislation underway.

So what is their current pay? Anyway, why should people who can't earn a living in the private sector have any business running for the legislature? In Texas, we pay our legislators just over $7,000 per year plus a per diem when the legislature is in session.

Current pay: $16K plus perdiem plus mileage
New Pay: $35K plus perdiem plus mileage plus auto cola
What they tried for: $50k plus perdiem plus mileage plus auto cola plus $6k expense increase

Yawn. This is such a non-story.

What's funny is that there are some "FReepers" who have taken it upon themselves to try to tar and feather Bobby Jindal with it.

It's amazing how such dedicated posters appear almost out of thin air....

Veto and let them bring it up again or attempt to override the veto.

Poor choice.

Now that’s what I’m talking about. We have had those democratic, egotistical good ole boys around long enough. It would be wonderful to get some ethical, conservative republicans in the LA legislature. Let them hang themselves! In fact, my Jefferson Parish congressman is the first to be recalled. He’s only been in office about 6 months.

Too much power to soon. Seduced by the dark side.

The LA legislature right now has more Republicans that it has ever had. People will blame the pay raise on Republicans, and particularly Jindal for not stopping it.

I think he is doing the right thing. Let the legislature deal with the voters’ anger.

However, $35K plus per diem and mileage is not a lot of money for someone to be paid for their time. It would be good for those other than the very wealthy to be able to serve and conduct the People's business.

The LA Lege is part-time. Sixty day sessions one year, Ninety day the next, alternating. Plus any special sessions that may be called. $143/day perdiem for every day they’re in session or their committee is meeting regardless if they are in attendance. Plus mileage.

I have not been following Jindal, and am unfamiliar with the reasons for his popularity in some circles.

Though keeping one's word matters a great deal, would a veto here be merely symbolic, in that the legislature would have the 2/3 to override it?

I'm going to judge his decision (not to veto) by its other fruit as well, in the faint hope that it is a form of 'stategery'.

No. The veto would stick.

Search with keyword Jindal and look at the posts and stories and links over the past couple of weeks. He raised state spending a billion dollars. He fought the tax cut he just signed. He gave out big payraises to state deadheads. Look it up.

To be perfectly honest, he fooled me. He had a decent voting record in congress. I voted for him for gov. five years ago and last year. He said all the right things and made you believe them. We conservatives were excited.

But this has been a very bitter letdown. I mean Louisiana ain't got the best reputation and now this faux conservative comes along and he's no better than what we've dealt with all my life.

Well, the man needs to be taught a lesson.

One of Jindal’s campaign pledges, clearly stated in black and white on his brochure, was that he would NOT allow this legislature to vote themselves a pay raise that would take effect while they were still in office.

This is why people are absolutely furious in Louisiana. Make no mistake, the anger toward Jindal and this legislature is palpable. I’ve never seen this much anger over an issue in Louisiana since I’ve been following politics in this State for over 23 years. The electorate is fed up!!

The pay raise is effective July 1, 2008. The next election for the governor and the legislature is fall, 2011. They were just sworn in January of this year.

I think a problem here is the confusion between an office and a job. The office holder may be reimbursed for some expenses while the job holder is selling the least amount of service for the highest revenue obtainable.

I think office holders should be just that, and not there selling their services.
