Protesters want legislative pay raises vetoed (Jindal heckled - JindalWatch® Alert)

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, in Shreveport for a ceremonial signing of a tax cut bill passed by the Legislature, was met today by protesters upset over state lawmakers doubling their pay and the governor's decision not to veto it.

Residents around the state want the governor to veto the pay raise bill. Jindal said he thinks the raise is a bad idea but he won't veto it, saying the Legislature should deal with the consequences of its actions.

Jindal went to Chamber of Commerce Plaza in downtown Shreveport at noon today for a ceremonial signing of a bill sponsored by Sen. B.L. Shaw of Shreveport that does away with the tax increases that arose out of the so-called Stelly Plan, which changed income tax brackets in return for doing away with the state sales tax on groceries.

"The easiest thing for me would be veto it," Jindal said to cheers. "I would be the most popular governor in the state's history."

He was heckled by one man when he added, "I don't want to give legislators or anybody else an excuse to slow down the reforms that ar so important for our state."

"You promised to veto!" the heckler said.

The protesters were outside with signs when the governor arrived. They were allowed inside the Chamber of Commerce building for the governor's appearance.

I think he is doing the right thing. Let the legislature deal with the voters’ anger.

However, $35K plus per diem and mileage is not a lot of money for someone to be paid for their time. It would be good for those other than the very wealthy to be able to serve and conduct the People's business.

They’re part-time, too.

Are you saying that the LA legislature is also part time or clarifying that the Texas legislature is part time?

The LA Lege is part-time. Sixty day sessions one year, Ninety day the next, alternating. Plus any special sessions that may be called. $143/day perdiem for every day they’re in session or their committee is meeting regardless if they are in attendance. Plus mileage.

It’s breaking news that a guy heckled Jindal? The moderators need to start locking these threads until Mike Huckabee (aka abb) starts classifying them correctly.

Are you now the posting police? If the mods want it removed, they’ll take care of it and I’m ok with that.

I have not been following Jindal, and am unfamiliar with the reasons for his popularity in some circles.

Though keeping one's word matters a great deal, would a veto here be merely symbolic, in that the legislature would have the 2/3 to override it?

I'm going to judge his decision (not to veto) by its other fruit as well, in the faint hope that it is a form of 'stategery'.

No. The veto would stick.

Search with keyword Jindal and look at the posts and stories and links over the past couple of weeks. He raised state spending a billion dollars. He fought the tax cut he just signed. He gave out big payraises to state deadheads. Look it up.

So is the fawning just a Republican form of Obama syndrome (good speeches + visible minority)?
