Some might call it criminal. Imagine if a Presidential candidate like John McCain or Barack Obama proposed giving North Americas oil to communist China. It would be the end of their career in politics. Americans would be furious. And yet that is exactly what our Congress has been doing now for several years.
The U.S. government is forbidding drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico and off the Eastern seaboard on the Continental Shelf. Meanwhile, China is preparing to tap into the same oil pockets with Cubas cooperation. China will actually be able to pump several oil pockets in the Gulf dry while American companies are forbidden from drilling in the same areas.
Americas dependence on foreign oil is a constant topic of talk inside official Washington and in the mainstream media. Trouble is, talk is about all we get...in terms of any solutions. But, in fact, Congress is actively causing much of Americas problems with energy.
Liberals talk about alternative energy sources yet have no workable ideas. Nearly 40 years of seeking alternative energy sources have failed to produce anything that can replace oil. Tax breaks and large government research grants have added to enormous private investment into alternative fuels since the 1970s. Yet liberals talk as if this is a new idea that has never been tried. Weve tried. Forty years of research have not revealed any magic solution.
So how long should we listen to the same, tired rhetoric? It seems that Democrats expect the U.S.A. to run on granola. The next time a politician calls for developing alternative energy instead of drilling for oil, should we say The Emperor has no clothes? (There are many clever ways to make oil last much, much longer and go farther, but not to completely replace it.)

This is false.
For one, the US cannot drill in the coastal waters of Cuba. That only makes sense. Second, US companies can drill in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico right off the Cuba coastal water territory. It's the western shores of Florida that are forbidden. But there is a lease area called "lease 181" about 100 miles off the Florida panhandle that is being leased which will take time to develop.
Well Obambi is running for Jimmy Carter’s second term, and Carter gave the Chinese the Panama canal.
Blip on the news.
Says there is oil under LA a whole lotta oil.
Great place to drill cant get anymore polluted the LA hell might clean up the place by drilling.
Bogus? High bogosity? Multibogusness?
Are you sure about that?
I thought it was signed over on Bill Clintons watch.

Ahhhhh hah.
Very good thanks.

These are the faces of stagnation, of no ideas, of pandering and appeasement.

“Cheneys false comment on oil drilling attacked

Vice President Dick Cheneys office acknowledged on Thursday that he was mistaken when he asserted that China, at Cubas behest, is drilling for oil in waters 60 miles from the Florida coast.”
HOWEVER, China is all set up to drill 50 miles offshore FL.
Okay?
COMMUNIST China has a 100-year lease to drill 50 miles offshore Florida. I heard they will use a horizontal drill. I also heard that other countries are leasing what could be OUR oil, as well, including the Gulf of Mexico. So while we’re waiting around begging the EnvironMENTALists to allow us to drill, let’s at least grab some land and lease it for our future energy. If we don’t, other countries will grab more and lease it for themselves.
AVACADO WROTE: “This is false. For one, the US cannot drill in the coastal waters of Cuba.”
MOSELEY: Oh, we WISH we were talking about the coastal waters of Cuba... but we’re NOT.
Jimmy Carter gave Cuba the right to access a HUGE area of the Gulf of Mexico, within 45 miles of the Florida Keys.
We’re talking about the coastal waters of FLORIDA - within 45 miles - not Cuba.
And unfortunately U.S. companies needs the permission of the U.S. Government to explore and drill ANYWHERE in the Gulf of Mexico. Your comment is entirely logical. But unfortunately the U.S. Government is not logical. U.S. oil companies need permission from the U.S. Government anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico.
THACKNEY WROTE: “Vice President Dick Cheneys office acknowledged on Thursday that he was mistaken when he asserted that China, at Cubas behest, is drilling for oil in waters 60 miles from the Florida coast.”
MOSELEY: READ CLOSER. The only change was “IS” versus “WILL”
Cheney was wrong that China has ALREADY STARTED.
But Cheney did NOT retract, nor was he wrong, the fact that Cheney IS PREPARING TO DRILL in the Gulf of Mexico.
The only thing Cheney got wrong was that China has not actually penetrated the sea bed yet. They are doing everything necessary to get ready.
MCCRon58 WROTE: “Have we looked into the fact that the oil market is a world market, and if we increase US production, what is to stop it from being sold to overseas customers.”
MOSELEY: Yes, you are right. It is a world market. However, (1) the more supply on the market the more prices will come down everywhere. (2) Part of the reasons for high prices is EXPECTATIONS that supplies will remain tight in future years. So bringing on more supply will bring down the “speculation factor” in the high prices. (3) A HUGE part of the rising price of oil is the FALLING DOLLAR. When we import oil, exchanging oil for Drachmas, it is more expensive when the dollar falls on world markets. The more we buy our own oil at home the less this is a factor. (4) If we have a greater proportion of our own oil, it will give us greater leverage in world markets, which could bring down prices.
Bottom line, though, a battery of solutions across the board will be needed.
HAVANNA JOURNAL announces CHINA WILL DRILL with Cuba off Florida Coast
China and India to drill for Cuban oil off Florida keys in Gulf of Mexico
Published: Thu May 11, 2006
CNN
Plans for foreign oil companies, some from India and China, to drill off the cost of Cuba are prompting calls from lawmakers to ease environmental restrictions that prohibit coastal drilling in most of the U.S., according to a report Tuesday.
At a time of rising soaring gasoline prices caused partly by a lack of supply, legislators are fuming that Cuba is opening up its continental shelf for oil and gas exploration while most of the U.S. continental shelf outside the Gulf of Mexico, which extends 200 miles from shore, has been off limits for drilling since the early 1980s, the New York Times reported.
Adding insult to injury, the Times said U.S. firms were invited to bid on the Cuban contracts, but were barred by the U.S. government due to the countrys longstanding economic embargo of communist Cuba.
Red China should not be left to drill for oil within spitting distance of our shores without competition from U.S. industries, Sen. Larry Craig, Republican of Idaho, told the Times.
Firms from Canada and Spain will also drill off the Cuban coast, the article said
Craig is introducing a bill to exempt U.S. oil firms from the embargo, much as food and drug firms are, according to the article.
There are also several bills moving through Congress aimed at opening up areas more areas of the U.S. to oil and gas exploration, including coastal waters and Alaskas Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Supporters of the bills, including the oil industry, say it would help bring down oil and gas prices and decrease the countrys reliance on oil imports from the volatile Middle East.
Gasoline prices have soared 33 percent over the last year, while the price of crude oil has tripled since 2002.
But critics of more drilling say the energy obtained, which they say would be minimal and wouldnt bring down prices that much, isnt worth the environmental risks. They also say more drilling for a finite resource does nothing to promote long term conservation solutions.
Most coastal states also oppose offshore drilling, fearing unsightly rigs and oil spills will hurt their tourism industries.
The United States Geological Survey estimates the Cuban deal involves 4.6 billion barrels of oil and 9.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, according to the Times. The paper said thats enough oil and gas to power the U.S. for a few months.
The paper also cited an Interior Department study that said the U.S. continental shelf contained 115 billion barrels of oil and 633 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That would be enough oil to satisfy U.S. demand, at current consumption levels, for 16 years and enough natural gas for 25 years, according to the Times.
That's Cuba's coastal water territory.
"U.S. oil companies need permission from the U.S. Government anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico."
And they have that permission for the central Gulf of Mexico and the area covered by lease 181. They just can't explore/drill off the continental shelf of western Florida.
There are news articles talking about other countries signing such agreements:

Doesn't it seem amazing to you that Brazil, Venezuela, Canada, India, Norway, Spain and Malaysian announcements of contracts and work appear in industry news articles but the claims of China having offshore oil leases in Cuba waters only appear in bloggers and editorials?
It was publishhed in the HAVANNA JOURNAL and reported on CNN:
THACKNEY WROTE: “Doesn’t it seem amazing to you that Brazil, Venezuela, Canada, India, Norway, Spain and Malaysian announcements of contracts and work appear in industry news”
Moseley: Actually, in addition to the news report in the HAVANNA JOURNAL, the company announcements you are talking about refer to companies that are being contracted to do the work.
China and Cuba are going to pump the oil and keep the oil. To do this, they are HIRING companies to do the work for them.
Don’t be confused by the companies hired to do the work, with the “owner” of the oil that will be produced. The company announcements are by the “hirelings” being asked to use their expertise. However, this work will be done on behalf of Cuba and China, as the owners of the oil.
China is financing the drilling which Cuba cannot afford.
Read the article again. They are making plans. China has bid on several different leases and LOST. I don’t doubt someday they will pony up enough to beat out those others but so far they have not. China has done some onshore work in Cuba and has sold some oil equipment, but has not succesfully won the rights to drill offshore.
Thanks for the link, I do appreciate another source to check.
Read those articles again, China was not involved. The agreements are between Cupet (Cuba Oil) and the other countries’ companies.
