Pelosi: I Want to Bring Back 'Fairness Doctrine'

Pelosi: I Want to Bring Back 'Fairness Doctrine' Photo of Ken Shepherd. By Ken Shepherd | June 25, 2008 - 10:38 ET

Over at HumanEvents.com, John Gizzi has House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on the record saying that the Democratic caucus, far from being agnostic on the so-called Fairness Doctrine, is actually interested in resurrecting it. What's more, Pelosi herself wants to bring back the policy that could literally silence conservative talk radio.

From his June 25 article:

At a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor yesterday, I asked Pelosi if Pence failed to get the required signatures on a discharge petition to get his anti-Fairness Doctrine bill out of committee, would she permit the Pence measure to get a floor vote this year.

"No," the Speaker replied, without hesitation. She added that "the interest in my caucus is the reverse" and that New York Democratic Rep. "Louise Slaughter has been active behind this [revival of the Fairness Doctrine] for a while now."

Pelosi pointed out that, after it returns from its Fourth of July recess, the House will only meet for another three weeks in July and three weeks in the fall. There are a lot of bills it has to deal with before adjournment, she said, such as FISA and an energy bill.

"So I don't see it [the Pence bill] coming to the floor," Pelosi said.

"Do you personally support revival of the ‘Fairness Doctrine?'" I asked.

"Yes," the speaker replied, without hesitation.

Conservative leaders including Media Research Center President and NewsBusters Publisher Brent Bozell have called for an up-or-down vote on ending the "Fairness Doctrine" once and for all.

For more on that, read this related NewsBusters piece.

The only way that Democrats will quit threatening to establish this “fairness doctrine” crap is if conservatives start liking the idea and demand their own networks or equal time on the msm networks.

I think he said once that he would be broadcasting somewhere, even if it is a small local station.

If in fact this unconstitutional monstrosity is revived, I predict sales of satellite radios will go through the roof . . . and the conservative talk that will flourish there will make today's commentators seem like George McGovern in comparison. After all, then they will only have to answer to subscribers, not advertisers (who are susceptible to boycotts, etc.)

"Yes," the speaker replied, without hesitation.

My FRiends, perhaps you agree that the upcoming election is the most critical we've yet faced.

If Obama is elected with a veto-proof majority in the Congress, the Marxist, (actually, make that STALINIST) Pelosi Dems will surely ...

(a) Wreck this great country, and ...

(b) Ensure that they will be "re-elected" in perpetuity.

It is pure Stalinism, without any doubt. Pelosi and her band of “hammer-and-sickle” thugs, want to suppress free speech which CARRIES THE TRUTH about their repressive, socialist agenda. Pure and simple. Under a transparent blanket of PURE FRAUD, the so-called “FAIRNESS DOCTRINE” is a flat-out attempt to squash the First Amendment and any political dissent. Not much different than the old Soviet Union, is it?

I hope a bill to reinstate the fairness doctrine never makes it to the floord of the House and Senate, but if it does, I will be one of what I imagine will be millions of conservative demonstrators protesting at the National Mall.

I would almost like to see that demonstration happen, but I’d naturally prefer that it never becomes necessary. But can you imagine what a sight that would be?

Not at all.

And it's all built on a legal fallacy. The “Fairness Doctrine” assumes that IDEOLOGIES have rights, not people.

Broadcasters want to make money. They do so by selling ads, and they can charge more if more people listen. Therefore, they broadcast what PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR.

Pelosi’s plan basically tells a segment of the population that they can't hear what they want, but instead must listen to the government line - something familiar to people who have fled Castro's Cuba, I'm sure.

It is absolutely disgusting that any significant portion of the electorate would ever support this. Maybe the only way to kill it would indeed be to “fight fire with fire” and apply the same rules to the MSM news, newspapers sold on government-owner property, like train stations (after all, the space there is a finite resource), etc.

Let's hope this garbage sinks the Dems again. Too many people want to give each party a chance to govern, again as if it's the parties who have rights. It's THE PEOPLE who have rights, and if one party has sunk so far that it deserves permanent exile from office, so be it.

Satellite transmission frequencies are allocated by the government, thus are just as vulnerable to the Fairness Doctrine as terrestrial broadcasts. I could see Rush switching to pirate transmitters off the coast for the Exile in Broadcasting network.

Seriously, Rush would be the last to go. Stations could make more money with three hours of Rush balanced by three hours of dead air with commercials scattered through each than they could with six hours of bland sports/home repair/cooking/music/other non-controversial programming. Replacing the three hours of dead air would only lose a little bit of rating when switched to three hours of liberal BS. The first to go would be the remaining local talkers and the lower to middle rated syndicated shows.

Look up the Progressive Caucus - Our Very Own Fifth Column, right here in Congress.

Until 1999, worked in open partnership with Democratic Socialists of America

The Progressive Caucus is an organization of Members of Congress founded in 1991 by newly-elected House Representative Bernie Sanders (Independent-Vermont), the former mayor of Burlington and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which describes itself as “the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International.”

I would like to see Rush start voicing support for it and DEMANDING time on ABC/NBC/CBS/etc.

We could start a rating website, based on the political rating systems, that rates very media figure. Then promote the site to all the conservative outlets. Google bomb it to the top of a search for "fairness doctrine".

You can bet that Pelosi & Co. are imagining it. Visions like that are the reason that liberals are scared to death of the outcome of the Heller case. Not that they really think "crazed gun owners" are going to start shooting people -- even though that's the MSM argument they propound -- but because they don't like the idea of people being able to resist indoctrination and slavery with armed force.
