'US intel: Hizbullah attack imminent'
Jerusalem Post ^ | 6/19/2008 | Staff

US and Canadian intelligence agencies warned Thursday that Hizbullah attacks on Jewish targets around the world could be imminent.

ABC News quoted intelligence officials as saying that Hizbullah had activated sleeper cells in Canada, and that top terror operatives had left Lebanon for the US, Canada and Africa.

According to the officials, Hizbullah wants to avenge February's assassination of its operations head Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus, for which the Shi'ite group holds Israel accountable.

Israel has repeatedly denied the allegation.

There was no reliable intelligence regarding the possible targets of such an attack, the sources told ABC News, adding, however, that Hizbullah operatives had recently been seen conducting surveillance on the Israel Embassy in Ottawa and on several Toronto synagogues.

"There are concerns Hizbullah might be ready to do something along those lines," ABC quoted a senior US counterterrorism official as saying.

CIA and National Security Agency officials quoted by the report said British and Canadian agencies began receiving a flow of intelligence on February 17, only a few days after Mughniyeh's funeral, regarding a possible Hizbullah attack.

"They want to kill as many people as they can, they want it to be a big splash," former CIA intelligence officer Bob Baer, who claimed he met with Hizbullah leaders in Beirut last month, was quoted by ABC as saying. "They cannot have an operation fail and I don't think they will. They're the A-team of terrorism."

According to officials quoted by the report, up to 20 suspected Hizbullah members have been under surveillance and their activities are being coordinated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

"Hizbullah would not carry out an attack in the West, or wherever this attack is going to occur, without approval from Teheran," Baer was quoted as saying.

No way. It would ensure McCain wins. And no, I am not being sarcastic. I would never have belived, just one year ago, that any other Dem candidate could make Hillary Clinton look wise, strong, and statesman-like.

This is why we and Israel should carpet bomb Gaza, the West Bank and Southern Lebanon.

It's is going to be interesting if Iran unleashes their hounds. They think that they learned how to defeat Israel during last summer's “war”. I think that they underestimate what Israel is capable if. Lets hope they unleash the smack down of those hoping to hasten the return of the 12th Imman.

If Hezbollaha attacks again, Karamshahar and other easy targets will be put out of commission.

Plausable deniability is no longer a valid defense.

Any attack on jews by Hizbullah will be considered an attack by the government of Iran on the target country and Israel. Appropriate measures will follow.

Some additional information on this story from today's Calgary Herald:

“More interesting is a report from ABC News that Hezbollah militants have awakened four sleeper cells and told them to go after “Jewish targets” in Ottawa and Toronto. “Canadian sources,” which means CSIS, evidently told ABC that Hezbollah operatives had been observed conducting surveillance on the Israeli embassy and on Toronto synagogues and Jewish schools.

The first thing to note is that the reports specified Hezbollah and not, for example, anonymous “Islamist militants.” In addition, one of the sleeper cells, Rashedan, was named explicitly.

Normally, as Allan Bell, president of the Toronto security company, Globe Risk Holdings, told CTV, such reports are kept secret. “If CSIS picked up these guys coming from the Middle East,” he wondered, “and they're under surveillance, why would a reporter in the U.S. be given that information?”

Good question.

There seem to be two obvious answers.

The first is to let Hezbollah know that CSIS has a mole well entrenched within the organization who is feeding them accurate and perhaps actionable intelligence. That makes the “leak,” if that is what it was, part of an on-going psychological war between CSIS and the banned terrorist group.

According to ABC there had been a lot of “chatter” lately about hitting Canadian Jewish targets in response to the death of Imad Mughniyah, deputy secretary general of Hezbollah who was killed in a bomb blast last February. He was said to have been the brains behind the bombings of the Israeli embassy and Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires in the early 1990s and was second only to Osama bin Laden on the FBI’s most wanted list. Hezbollah blamed Israel for his death.

American intelligence agencies, including CIA and the National Security Agency, which is in charge of electronic eavesdropping, were involved in monitoring and analyzing the chatter.

The second answer thus was to tell the world that Canadian-American intelligence cooperation, dating from the Cold War, was still firmly in place.”

The unspoken news (at least as it pertains to the US) is that our own govt gave the terrorists a pass to come here (legally or not). Not sure this is a slam dunk for the republican Jose given his stand on illegal immigration. Guess he’s unaware that OTMs make up a large portion of those who walk across our southern border.
