MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's parliament voiced its support on Wednesday for the rights of great apes to life and freedom in what will apparently be the first time any national legislature has called for such rights for non-humans.
Parliament's environmental committee approved resolutions urging Spain to comply with the Great Apes Project, devised by scientists and philosophers who say our closest genetic relatives deserve rights hitherto limited to humans.
"This is a historic day in the struggle for animal rights and in defense of our evolutionary comrades, which will doubtless go down in the history of humanity," said Pedro Pozas, Spanish director of the Great Apes Project.
Spain may be better known abroad for bull-fighting than animal rights but the new measures are the latest move turning once-conservative Spain into a liberal trailblazer.
Spain did not legalize divorce until the 1980s, but Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's Socialist government has legalized gay marriage, reduced the influence of the Catholic Church in education and set up an Equality Ministry.

Hundreds of new voters for Zapatero!
I wonder what Dr. Zaius thinks about this?
Well, scratch Spain off the list. I’m running out of countries here.
“Get your paws off of me you damned dirty ape!”
BTW, UK has occupied Gibraltar longer than the Spanish.
What breathtaking environazi big-brotherspeak, delivered in such a matter-of-fact, breezy manner.
Utterly chilling.
How would the Inquisition handle this?
I’m just home from the dentist ... and those teeth look familiar ...
When I read the title, then clicked on the article, I seriously expected to see “The Onion” listed, but it wasn’t there...
This is unbelievable, Spain has really went down the Secularist path, I hope my Christian Brothers in Spain manage to hang on in this insane time.
“Don’t you know you’ve got to shock the monkey?”
My German Shepherd won't even take a leak if someone is looking.
Dog rights now!
It’s alright with me.
My dad took me to the circus and I got so irate at the jerk hitting the little dog in the circus act I threw my coke at him. Too bad I was too far away and it landed on a guy and his date.......
I was about 8 of course. But I still hate the circus.
Now it seems the Spanish have traded their glory of the Creator to that of the creature.
King Kong Bundy!
A soon to be powerful voting bloc I’m sure.
SSSSHHHHHH
it happens.
ARE THERE ANY SANE PEOPLE OUT THERE???
Don’t let any Americans near those apes or Mr. Justice Kennedy will grant them habeas corpus rights!
Just wait till the apes get their tax bill.
Wonder if the apes will be given any responsibilities?
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
More and more, reality is outdoing the Onion in terms of over-the-top, ludicrous insanity.
Female college students banned from whistling AT builders (behavior is harassment)
Council bans brainstorming (Word is deemed offensive to epileptics; hundreds of staff retrained)
This is unbelievable, Spain has really went down the Secularist path, I hope my Christian Brothers in Spain manage to hang on in this insane time.
They may well be able to survive physically, for now at least, but will most likely be starved spiritually in Spain just as is the case wherever Socialism gains a firm hold....even here in the USA, Christians and believers of most other religious affiliations (except for muslims and atheists, it seems) are being marginalized legislatively by the encroaching Leftist leviathan that continually pushes God out of the public square and into the shadows. What little remains in public view then oftentimes becomes corrupted.
New blood Violent gang life is passed down from parent to child (Blessed-in at Church)
Dont you know youve got to shock the monkey?
The 1980's seem so calm and innocent compared with today. "sigh"
I see things a bit differently Stoat, the more they try to keep us down, the more we press on, in china for example, a “illegal” Pastor or Christian can be arrested and tortured, yet our Faith grows in China, we in the West have grown soft and comfy in our Sanctuaries, let the Troubles come, the grain and the chaff will be winnowed one from the other.
Our task is to remain true, no matter the stupidities we’ve seen the ending, we win...if we withstand the rain.
Would the apes be able register as Democrats under the Motor Voter Act?
And I'm delighted that you do. Sometimes it's hard to maintain an optimistic, positive attitude about things and it's refreshing to encounter a view that's not quite so negative as my own is about some things....particularly things that are so very important as this.

Very nicely put, and I sincerely hope that your optimism is borne out and that my pessimism is proven entirely wrong in the end.
I suppose we could view it as the ultimate triumph of Good over Evil, and I confess that sometimes my faith falters. It's difficult sometimes, with so very much in the way of bad news in the world and so much oppression against those who follow God. Thanks very much for your perspective :-)
Nice Stoat, I suppose I could quote some Scripture here, but I think the better idea is that if we remain true to Christ, he will remain true to us, and we operate on a small unit basis, if we are individually positive, then others around us will be as well, and they will look for the source of that optimism, and for the us, it is found in Christ.
My worry isn’t “The next outrage” my worry is that the Faithful will lose Faith, mankind doesn’t change Stoat, is “gay marriage” any different from the pagan practice of burning us as torches?
What we do need though, is consistency, always always always consistency, we are built on bedrock, the world is built on sand, we should not deviate from the bedrock to embrace the sand model.
All excellent points, and essential advice that all should take to heart.
Thank you again :-)
There's your problem, right there.

This calls for a photoshop of the super-imposed face of an ape doing Spanish flamenco dancing with castanets photo.
This is just the sort of foreign precedent that Justice Kennedy will consult for his “evolving standards” of jurisprudence.
Three monkeys sat in a coconut tree
Discussing things as they are said to be.
One said to the other, “Listen here, you two.
“I just heard a rumor that CAN’T be true.
“That man descended from our noble race!
“The very idea is a big disgrace.
“No monkey ever cheated his wife,
“Starved her baby, and ruined her life.”
Yeaaaaah.
The monkey speaks his mind!
“You’ll never see a mother monk
“Leave her child with others to bunk.
“Passing him off from one to the other,
“Till the poor child sca’cely knows his mother.”
Yeaaaaaah.
The monkey speaks his mind!
“And here’s another thing you’ll never see -
“A monkey build a fence around a coconut tree.
“Letting good coconuts go to waste
“While forbidding all others to come and taste.
“Why, if I built a fence around a tree,
“Starvation would force you to steal from me.”
Yeaaaaah.
The monkey speaks his mind!
“And here’s one more thing a monkey won’t do -
“Go out at night and get on a stew.
“Or use a gun, or club, or knife
“To take another monkey’s life.
“Yes, man descended, the worthless bum.
“But brothers, from us HE DID NOT COME.
Yeaaaaah.
The monkey speaks his mind!
