Mexico City - An estimated 500,000 illegal immigrants from South America, the Caribbean and Central America pay Mexican gangs to help them transit Mexico and cross into the United States every year, Mexico's National Human Rights Commission said Wednesday.
This illegal trade brings 'extraordinary earnings' since each person pays 4,000 to 15,000 dollars. In total, this would mean some 2 to 7.5 billion dollars a year, the commission said.
The commission, which also said Mexican officials deport an estimated 200,000 illegal immigrants every year, released the report just two weeks after a high profile illegal transit case made headlines.
An armed commando stopped Mexican authorities transporting 37 illegal migrants to an immigration center, and disappeared with many of them. Eighteen of the group later resurfaced in the US.
'The earnings in the illegal trade in people can only be compared to those of arms trafficking, human trafficking for the purposes of exploitation and drug trafficking,' the commission said.
The institution asked the Mexican Congress to implement legal reforms so that the state can prosecute offenders of its own accord and so that offenders can be punished more harshly.
The commission said it is essential that witnesses be protected and that migrants who are victims of human traffickers get the same legal protection that those who have been victims of trafficking for subsequent exploitation.
Every year, an estimated 1.7 million illegal immigrants enter the United States, most of them across the Mexico border. In 2005, US officials arrested and deported 1.2 million illegal immigrants, 85 per cent of them from Mexico. An estimated half a million manage to elude detection every year.
where do these “struggling” people from central america and mexico, get thousands of dollars to pay someone?
i work hard, pay taxes, and don’t have anything like that
if they have that much money, why don’t they stay and start some kind of business in their home country?
For a business to succeed there has to be a ‘consumer class’ ... Mexico is a destitute population overseen by a couple of dozen extremely wealthy families. Peones don’t make up a ‘consumer class’ when they’re subsisting.
A man with $4,000 can live in modest comfort for a year in most Central American countries.
So, these same people are risking up to $15,000 for a chance to work like slaves in America?
Something is badly wrong with this story.
Ya gota figure in all the U.S. Gov perks for illegals.
War? Terrorism? Threats? And our national security is?
No where in sight.
right, there is little middle class in mexico, i’m still trying to figure where they get the money to pay a coyote, i assume some of it is from their relatives who are already here in the states?
I agree. Certainly no one would pay that amount if they were not counting on more in the USA. So, what is the value of US citizenship, free housing, welfare, free medical care, food stamps, etc? Add maybe 12 or so an hour? I do not know?
“Gangs Traffic Some 500,000 Foreigners A Year Across Mexico”
And if you don’t think that includes terrorists, I’ve got some gas free frijoles to sell ya.
Some? uh, the vast majority of the cash is generated in the USofA and wired down to Mexico for payment of coyotes. After having a couple of lengthy conversations with the honcho on the landscaping job at my house, my eyes were opened to the underground functioning as a highway to usher Mexicans North. I also learned about vehicle transfers, where used vehicles are worked on and driven South for sale, and most of that money is funneled to the coyote criminal class. Surely there is a book written on the facts of this actiuvity, but I haven’t come across it yet.
ping
The Chinese pay from $30 to $50,000. Where do they get the money?
Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Only the most hard core Bush fan would dispute that.
An invasion of this country.
Buh, buh, but....there are restaurant owners in California who NEED these illegals to staff their tables and kitchens....can’t we cut them a break and look past this for the sake of their ‘just makin’ a buck?’
agree with what you said
We have a winner!!
what do i win! what do i win! :)
