Fenty Expresses Dismay at Ruling on Guns
Washington Post ^ | June 26, 2008 | David Nakamura and Paul Duggan

Posted on 06/26/2008 11:44:12 AM PDT by 3AngelaD

D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty expressed disappointment today with the Supreme Court's decision striking down the city's gun law, warning that, "More handguns will lead to more handgun violence."

At a news conference two hours after the court overturned the city's ban on handguns, Fenty (D) said he viewed today's ruling as narrowly tailored to guns in the home and not on the street, emphasizing that the city can still bar handguns from being carried outside of the home.

The District now must create new regulations detailing the process for registering handguns, which the Supreme Court said can be kept in homes for self-defense.... Fenty said the city's police department will take 21 days to develop the requirements for registering a handgun in the District.

...the mayor added that he believes he speaks for District residents in saying, "We are disappointed in the ruling. We wish it had gone the other way, but we respect the court's" decision....

The District's law, passed during a crime wave in 1976, was widely viewed as the most restrictive in the country...The city has had 85 homicides so far this year, one less than at the same point in 207....

In the majority opinion, written by Justice Antonin Scalia, the court stressed the importance of the right to own guns as a means of self-defense. The opinion said the handgun ban violated the Second Amendment, and said that the restrictions on other weapons in the homes, rendering them inoperable, also went beyond legal boundaries....

Doesn’t DC have one of the worst murder rates in the country? Also incompetent police and corrupt, left-wing judges?

If there was ever a place where people need to defend themselves, DC would seem to be it.

What willl be fun is the collision course between all the liberal rulings that say bum’s boxes in the street are “homes” and the right to have a weapon in your home.

Ha-Ha.

Yes, the handgun ban in D.C. has led to such a safe, gun and crime free city has it not Mr Mayor-With-His-Head-Up-His-A**?

I wouldn’t register anything and take my chances if I ever had to defend my family.

My personal belief is that young Fenty couldn’t care less either way, but he clearly has Obama-sized ambitions and is busy currying favor with Darth Soros and the dem sith-lords for their future support.

The days of rugged-individualist, idiosyncratic democrat politicians are over. From now on, they will be cookie-cutter leftists who faithfully recite the Book of Statist Prayer.

Democrats REFUSE to hold a vote on drilling for more oil in America.

Democrats REFUSE to hold a vote on building more oil refineries.

Democrats REFUSE to help Americans struggling with the high price of gasoline.

AND they didn't want you to own a gun.... and they want Barack Hussein Obama in the oval office.....these Socialists really aren't too smart..............

I wonder what the actual odds are that a gun-owner will need to use his weapon to defend himself/family?

"More handguns will lead to more handgun violence."

If you define "handgun violence" as a citizen defending himself or herself from a criminal, then yes, it will, at least at first. Subsuming both criminal activity and self-defense under the label "gun violence" is the artifice of a liar and a con man.

Yeah, Adrian, that ban was a good thing. I mean, just imagine if somebody brought a gun into the District and shot the President. That sure can’t be allowed to—

—oh, wait a minute. I’m sorry. That actually DID happen.

Oh, the humanity of it all. Guns running wild in the streets firing indiscriminately at anyone in the way. Of course, there’s no one standing behind any one of these guns pulling the trigger, because, as we all know, it’s not people who kill people. /sarc

Would any lawyer care to chime in on this question - in "lawyer speak", is this ruling today comparable to "strict scrutiny", or more properly characterized as some lesser level of scrutiny?

As a non-lawyer, I hope I phrased the question correctly. Thanks...

You don't understand. About half of all inhabitants of this country have a deep hatred for the USA, period. That number just happens to match the percentage of liberals/socialists/communists.

Pray for the future of this Republic.

warning that, “More handguns will lead to more handgun violence.”

Dolt! The only additional handguns will be in the hands of the law-abiding, and recently defenseless individuals.

May I quote Nelson from the Simpsons when I say “HA HA”

> the city's police department will take 21 days to develop the requirements

Does this give DC residents a 21-day window of opportunity to "go to town"?

Dear Mr mayor. Do you have security guards or police protecting you? What kind of elitist are you to try to prevent normal people from protecting themselves?
Time for you to resign.

Oh, by the way, Adrian, I’ve taken the liberty of writing John Hinckley and telling him you’re making the beast with two backs with Jodie Foster. Of course, I know Jodie likes the womens, and YOU know Jodie likes the womens, but I figured why spoil it for Junior?
