Presumptive Republican presidential nomine John McCain criticized his Democratic rival Thursday, accusing Barack Obama of having "elitist" gun views.
The comments came after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns and ruled that Americans have the right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, The Financial Times reported.
McCain hailed the ruling as a "landmark victory" for gun rights. Referring to remarks Obama made during the primary campaign, McCain said Obama is out of touch with Americans on gun rights.
"Unlike the elitist view that believes Americans cling to guns out of bitterness, today's ruling recognizes that gun ownership is a fundamental right -- sacred, just as the right to free speech and assembly," the Arizona senator said.
In the court's majority opinion, Justice Antonin Scalia said an individual right to bear arms is supported by "the historical narrative" both before and after the Second Amendment was adopted.
Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign, a gun control advocacy group, said the court had ruled against the extremes on both sides of the argument by striking down an outright gun ban but affirming the ability of local officials to impose "common sense" restrictions on gun ownership.
Well, he got it up. Let’s see if he can keep it up.
Nice, Mad Jon is finally throwing Conservatives some bones here.
MJ and Rove are correct, Obamao is an elitist anti capital snob who’d rather see Americans made poor through taxation, and defenseless via victim disarmament laws ala the UK.
Obama needs to understand that we can own guns for any reason we want and we don’t owe him any type of explanation.
Obama needs to understand that we can own guns for any reason we want and we dont owe him any type of explanation.
You got that right. Where would this Country be if not for the right to arm ourselves? A UK territory, that’s where.
Right turn, Clyde!
All aboard!!! The train’s leaving the station...
Direct Hit.
You forgot “Hard to Starboard”.
Excellent. Keep it up, McCain.
With 70% or more of the country in favor of individual gun rights, he needs to do all that he can to turn this into a major issue this fall and point out just how anti-2A Obama really is.
Not bad Johnny Boy. Keep it up and I’ll start to believe you have what it takes.
He wants to be POTUS and if it takes a few broken bones to get there he'll have no problem doing it. Despite his flaws, and they are major flaws, McCain is a tough guy. JMHO of course.
Here's a priceless quote from the Queens, NY DA Richard Brown:
“While the court has limited the authority of Congress to control guns, it does importantly acknowledge that the Second Amendment only applies to the federal government ... thus allowing state and local government to enact reasonable laws to keep guns out of the hands of criminals,” Brown said.
Did you see the thread where McClintock wants McCain to take Thompson as VP?

I heard the one from daly today,a classic.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
As much as a McClintock fan as I am, that would be as bad a choice as Dick Cheney was and for the same reason: Thompson is too old to move up to the presidency after McCain's term.
“As much as a McClintock fan as I am, that would be as bad a choice as Dick Cheney was and for the same reason.”
Well, I happen to think Dick Cheney is the best VP in American history, and, if I had my “’druthers,” I’d much prefer he were the prez and GWB the vice prez. But, GWB did at least three things right: (1) Dick Cheney; (2) Chief Juatice John Roberts; (3) Justice Sam Alito.
Actually McCain is more an elitist, while Obama is 100% stealth fascist on this particular issue.
And we haven’t been hit since 9/11
Beautiful. Just beautiful.
I keep recalling how Mike Dukakis was 17 points ahead of Bush. And I see Obama trying to "trinagulate" ala Clinton. The libs will take anything he says, as they just want to win win win, but...I wonder how long his poll numbers will hold when he has to start answering yes or no questions about policy.
Did he ever get back to McCain about those town hall meetings? I thought Obama was all about hanging with "The People"?
