SF school board kills p.e. credit for JROTC
SF Chronicle ^ | Thursday, June 26, 2008 | Nanette Asimov

Posted on 06/26/2008 8:27:04 PM PDT by buwaya

(06-26) 19:20 PDT San Francisco -- San Francisco public high schools will no longer award physical education credit to students enrolled in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, the Board of Education voted today in a hastily scheduled meeting.

The 4-to-1 vote will likely cripple the 90-year-old military education program that serves 1,200 students because most use it to satisfy their p.e. requirement.

"If students really love the program, they'll take it anyway," said board president Mark Sanchez, who has led opposition to JROTC because of its ties to the military.

Gregory Wing, who will be a sophomore at Lowell next semester, said he loves JROTC, but the board's vote "messes everything up for incoming freshmen and sophomores" who have no room in their schedules for the required p.e. and for JROTC.

"It's completely unfair," he said. "What am I going to do for credit?"

...

JROTC has been on death row in San Francisco since 2006, when the board voted to eliminate the military program. But the board had since agreed to let it continue through spring 2009.

...

Meanwhile, JROTC supporters say they haven't given up trying to save their program. Johnny Wang, spokesman for Choice for Students, said that by Sunday the group of parents and others who want to keep JROTC will have collected the 7,200 signatures they need to place a nonbinding measure on the November ballot intended to show support for the program.

"Eliminating p.e. credit is their way of neutralizing JROTC," Wang said of the board. "But we're in this for a bigger fight."

But board President Sanchez said the district will eventually offer an alternative to JROTC within the ethnic studies program.

"There will be opportunities for leadership," he said.

Note - this is just step 1 in a move to eliminate JROTC in all of California, using the courts, its just that in SF they had an easy first victory.

"Ethnic studies program" my a**.

Whats needed is a powerful national reaction. This needs to be an election issue. The narrative is ideal - patriotic immigrant kids (JROTC is very popular with Asian kids) oppressed by an out-of-control Obama-loving liberal establishment.

As long as my son has enough advance warning, if the terrorists are going to hit us again, let it be San Francisco.

I keep trying to remind myself...the reason why we haven’t surrounded San Francisco and Berkeley with 20 FT tall razor wire fencing and re-designated it as ‘hostile enemy territory’ is what, exactly?

I feel sorry for the great kids who won’t be exposed to this tremendous opportunity as a result of all this.

No big deal.

Almost all of SF’s high school students are illegal aliens who can't qualify as officers anyway.

Damn the lib a**es in SF! My brother-in-law was a leader in JROTC at Lowell High in SF, graduated with honors. JROTC is extremely popular with kids in San Francisco, and they work very hard in their activities. All physically fit, and they score high academically. Isn’t that supposed to be the objective? The libs want fat stupid sheep!

That is not true, you halfwit.

SF’s best students are LEGAL Asian immigrants, and they are just plain brilliant and patriotic citizens. Much smarter than you are, and of much finer character, for certain.

what saddens me is that these policies are doomed to failure, as liberal policies always are, but the time frame to set things straight is on the order of generations. We can only sit numbly by and watch, like a slow motion train wreck. After it’s over, we’ll have to go in and pick up the pieces. So sad...

buwaya,

USA military officers MUST be USA citizens.

IQ has zero to do with that.

SF advertises itself globally as a “Sanctuary City,” so you have NO idea how many students are legal and how many are not legal.

What I’m asking you for is something other than snarky comments.

You've got to expect such mild, poignant commentary at a Conservative news discussion forum.  Please don't become upset when people respond to truly awful, anti-American news with less than the utter contempt and revulsion it deserves.  I would think that most healthy people would be delighted to see that there are still people who are willing to stand up for what's right and register their profound displeasure at such terrible occurrences.

 HELP US !

What sort of help would you like?  Advice on how to repopulate the voting demographics of the City of San Francisco with a sane majority, so that you won't have elected officials who pull crap like this?

JROTC cannot be used for a PE credit in our schools, and that's okay, because while they do a day or two a week of marching and PT, physical education ought to involve some sort of work out every day.

JROTC is still one of the most popular programs in our school, but then again, we aren't in San Francisco.

Actually, the probably killed it for after school sports being given PE credit also.

There’s a new state regulation that kids have to actually take PE and other activities will not count.

Here’s the website that San Jose Unified has about the new restrictions:

You aren’t wrong, but ...

Weirdly, the government of SF is pro-JROTC, or the mayor (Gay-marriage Newsom) is anyway.

The School Board is MUCH further left than the mayor.

That may be an odd concept to get around, but its so.

I'm sure that PE is offered as a separate course, and if they are just taking JROTC as an easy PE credit, I'm not sure what that accomplishes for the military.

I don't know what California school requirements are. Here, P.E. is required, and JROTC is an elective, but the kids have at least one elective each year, so there's no problem if they really want to take JROTC. My niece, who will be in 9th grade next year, is taking JROTC and band as electives.

I would like to think we conservatives actually possess brains and a sense of reality. Or we should.

And I would like to think that people who call themselves Conservative would know enough of basic courtesies and decency to understand that suggesting that others with whom you are conversing don't "actually possess brains " is not regarded as a congenial form of social interaction, and is the sort of statement that is not likely to gain friendship opportunities among thoughtful people.

And, by the way, you started this thread merely with the article posting and a statement of your thoughts on the matter, not the 'request for help' that you did in later posts.  If you had begun this thread with a sincere request for advice and assistance then that is precisely what you would have received from this forum, and we would not be having this particular discussion.

Agreed, and what a magnificent mental image this creates!  I fear, however, that the prospect of wearing dog collars that occasionally produce a mild electric shock would be an absolute delight for a significant percentage of San Franciscans, and so would most likely not produce the desired result....

There is little room for non-academic electives in SF, in the challenging (mainly Asian) schools where JROTC is strong.

What does JROTC achieve ? Consider this - these JROTC kids (in SF) are disproportionately academically top-notch. They really are that cliche, the leaders of the future. Aren’t we all going to be better off that they went through the JROTC experience, as a countermeasure to the anti-American brainwashing they get all through the rest of their academic experience ? It does seem that way to me. These kids WANT the opportunity to feel American.

buwaya,

I apologize - I didn't understand you were referring only to kids already enrolled in JROTC.

My somewhat sarcastic point was this.....

Pew Research, a center-left pro-immigration endowment, estimates that one third of the students in SF and LA are not US citizens.

And, SF votes about 75% Democratic and is probably the most anti-military city in the country.

Thus, the SF school system did not strike me as fertile ground for America's future military leaders.

I tend to agree with this statement. Since when does extracurricular activities count as credit for graduation. PE is separate from JROTC. Yes I have 21 years in the military and support JROTC, but still find PE a separate class from JROTC.
