Think you paid too much for your Playstation 3? Don't expect any sympathy from Sony.
In the company's fiscal 2008 annual report, Sony revealed that they've now lost roughly $3.3 billion (that's billion with a B) on the Playstation 3 since its launch. That breaks down to $2.16 billion in 2007, followed by a notably smaller but equally daunting $1.16 billion loss in 2008.

Strategy is to make up the difference with video game sales and increased market penetration.
IIRC, you follow the console battles
Good.
I hope they suffer.
I bought a 2 year ~extended~ warranty on my Vaio laptop when the factory one year warranty was up only to be told it was actually only *one* “extra” year because they counted the *first* year ~in~ the -2- year ~extended~ warranty.
The screen is messed up from magnetism because of a known, flaw in this model’s speaker shielding [this is from their tech people] and they won’t honor the 2 year warranty I paid for and fix it.
Have a lot of Sony stuff here [some of it, insanely expensive] but I’m never gonna buy another thing from them.
Apparently the best option for a future-proof Blu-Ray player as well as a fine gaming console.
What I'd like to know is why all these third party video game companies keep releasing games for the failed PS3 instead of the successful Wii. Why are all the Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, and Call of Duty game series being released on PS3 and not Wii?
Just guessing, it might be exclusive agreements with Sony were signed for those titles and now they are locked in.
boo-hoo
Let me try again...
Boo-Hoo!
Was that good?
You bet. The PS3 Blu Ray works real good, and no need for another component.
Cough...I used to work for Sony “some” time ago, and I agree with ya. The reason why I had PS1 in the first place was to play Gran Turismo with my little brothers.
They even whup Dell in the “screw over your loyal customers” department.
I did not think that possible.
“Anti-Christian Sony”
Backstory details, please?
[not that I really *need* another reason to detest them even *more*, right now]....;)
Boo hoo for Sony. I’ll skip anything with that name on it because of their track record. Blue ray is a tech system I will bypass. There will be a better, cheaper system that is not Sony proprietary in a year. It’s not always smart to be the first to own something. I’ll let the Jones’s eat the cost of this one by themselves
Anyone who has a PSP has too much time and money on their hands.
**They even whup Dell in the screw over your loyal customers department**
HP beat both of them. I have a lemon laptop that I paid 2 year warranty and HP won;t honor their contract. I already notified the Atty General etc, and pondering filing suit with the L.A. Small Claims Court for X amount.
HP already won the Harris Poll as the worst in computer customer satisfaction.
But now with the siutation reversed, all these game companies keep tossing their best titles on the PS3 and ignoring the hugely successful Wii. It's very frustrating for me as a Wii owner. Haven't these companies ever heard of supply and demand? It's like they want to go down with the ship. The only way I can play these games is by buying the Windows version.

Oh, great.
Guess what I bought to replace the Sony.....:-\
[How does one go about doing the atty. general/claims dealy? If I gain nothing else, annoying them will suffice]
Resident Evil 4 is the best game on the Wii, and you’re saying that Resident Evil 5 is PS3-exclusive? That’s no good.
Are you frigging nuts?
The Wii is a toy.
the PS3 is an unbeliveable piece of machinery.
Give me a break.
I bought it thinking i was still into games. the multi-media aspect is what i ended up using. It plays almost all formats, if i’m too lazy to burn or copy i just stream wirelesly from my pc to the ps3.
Sony “Home” which will be out soon is about to tranform millions of losers into on-line zombies.
Oh yea, Wii is a nice “toy” but please. PS3 games now and in the future completely blow it away.
But you say the Wii cost 1/3 the price?
Yea it does.
You ask why are the Huge game companies making the incredible games that work best on the ps3?
Because the PS3 is the best machine to play them!!
Duh!
Look at sales charts, Sony has sold a crapload of machines this year, and while people start realizing the 360 is actually the failed product expect a hell f a lot more sales to come.
Again the WII is a toy for little kids and their ignorant parents.
“Again the WII is a toy for little kids and their ignorant parents.”
Yuck. A fanboy.
It’s a huge company with many long tentacles...

Please
Their "tech" people sure are a funny lot, if they think magnetism can affect liquid crystal displays!
Which Vaio model was it, by the way?
Fujitsu is the better laptop brand, quality-wise. In fact, it's probably the best out there.
The capabilities of a PS3 far outshines the Wii or any other competition.
The reason why Wii became a hit was that it was more affordable, and also released early.
You’re not going to compare the performance of a PS3 with a Wii, are you?
Thank you.
That said,
No game on the PS3 can break my 2 year addiction to Battlefield 2142 on my PC.
It’s worse than Heroin.
I wish i could find a Freeper partner to kick ass with!!
VAIO VGN-A790
In the beginning of June, “Malcolm” told me about the magnetism thing and said the warranty issue was fixed and that I should await the arrival of the return box.
Last week, I called to see where the box was and got re-screwed.
Frankly, I don’t care if gamma-rays caused it so long as it got -fixed-.
[not holding my breath, though]
Not really into games, I must admit though.
I was watching South Park the other day, and this advert caught my attention:

I'm a home theater early adopter and have both 360 and PS3. I watched a DVD after watching HDDVD and wanted to poke my eyes out, so I got my PS3 on ebay cheap. I've been picking up HDDVD movies on ebay ever since the "format war" was won by bluray. Bluray will be gone in 5 years too as everyone goes to content delivered on demand or over the internet.
Microsoft is nearly breaking even on the 360s now. PS3 is losing oodles of money, but won the format war they HOPE recoups their costs and turns a profit. I still have not bought any games other than the 5 that came in my ebay deal, so they aren't getting any of the back end costs back from me.
And with COD4 on Xbox live being the single best FPS game in the history of the world (just my opinion), I doubt my PS3 will see any gaming time at all for the better part of this year. If any Freepers are playing COD4, let me know what your handle is and we can go play some Hardcore.
Agree.
Ack.
I wasn’t kidding about how much Sony stuff we own.
I feel somewhat unclean, now.
Thank you for answering.
I did not know.
I got both the Wii and the PS3 when they came out.
The Wii is okay, I guess, if I could get Wii Fit I might actually turn it on. But the PS3 is the real deal. No comparison for games or blu-ray movies or anything else, and it’s only going to get better.
People who don’t have both, side-by-side, may not be able to make an informed comparison. If they did they’d understand the superiority and future-orientation of the PS3 much better.
Looking forward to Home and Little Big Planet, among many others.
It might be hoping for a lot, but if this “Malcolm” has mailed you anything about the magnetism problem, you should forward that to as many Sony customer service email addresses as possible. Even if you don’t have an email to forward, just send them a detailed explanation about what you endured, including the explanations they gave you.
Someone usually replies.
Yep, that's the case. The Wii version of Resident Evil 4 got across-the-board reviews as THE definitive version of the game (clearly SUPERIOR to the Gamecube, PS3, and PC versions of the same game), and now the suicidal fools at Capcom want to make Resident Evil 5 "exclusively" for a system that sold half as many units. You have to wonder why no one bought the Playstation version of Resident Evil 4 if it was made for such a "superior" piece of hardware.
We Wii owners get the "spinoff, sidegame" Resident Evil: Umbrella Chroniciles instead.
Also, you will note that the Wii version of The Godfather: The Game (released as "The Don's Edition"), also received unanimous reviews as the BEST version of the game out there, outshining the PS3, XBox 360, and PC version in content, game control, smoothness, and sheer fun. The Wii version had all kinds of features that simply weren't possible on the "superior" PS3.
Interesting how whenever third party developers do release Wii and PS3 versions of a game side-by-side, the Wii version always does better and gets better press.
Of course anyone who actually owns a Wii and has played games like Scarface: The World is Yours, Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime Corruption, and Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None knows they weren't designed as "children's toys".
Seeing an insult where there is none, IS fanboytown!
All I did was mention that the capabilities and performance of the PS3 being far ahead of any other gaming console. It's just the specs, really.
Oh, and I don't play too many games. If I did want a solid gaming rig, I'd rather have a souped-up PC with the latest graphics card, than a TV-based console.
It was all by phone but at this point, I’ll give anything a shot.
The laptop was probably the nicest machine I’ve ever owned but the screen has “crop circles” all along the sides of the LCD.
A Google search brought up a *lot* of Sony LCD issues that are just like mine.
It was a bad batch of screens....and they don’t care.
Meh. I still like the Atari 2600. Thirty years old but there are still new games being written for it.

You shouldn't let them get away with this. Attach a good resolution photograph or two of the problem in the LCD, with the email to Sony.

PS3 port
The PlayStation port of Resident Evil 4 was released after the original version was designed with the Gamecube in mind. Critics stated that the PlayStation 2 version's ported graphics were actually inferior to those of the GameCube, even though Play station’s version was released almost a year later. Side-by-side comparisons revealed the original GameCube version looked sharper and offered deeper colors.
Additionally, almost all the GameCube’s real-time cut scenes were converted into FMV movie files in order to maintain a better quality on the lower-spec PS2 & PS3. In other words, the players character will appear (in higher-polygon GameCube model) wearing their default costume, regardless of which accessories or outfits were actually chosen. The gameplay balancing present in the PAL GameCube version applies to the PlayStation 2 version as well (though the North American release has no Easy option).
Additionally, voices and sound effects quality outside of the cutscenes had been reduced due to audio RAM constraints
A second special-edition chainsaw-controller was also made for the PS3, on which ripcord itself doubled as the Start button. The controller was designed for use on the PS2 and PC, and could only be used with a PS2 controller-to-USB adaptor, meaning it can still be used on a PlayStation 3.
IGN gave the game a 9/10 overall, but a score of 7/10 when compared to the Nintendo version. “Due to differences in processing power, Playstation’s Resident Evil 4 is not as quick, clean, or clear”, they noted.
Wii Edition
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition includes Wii Remote and Nunchuk compatibility for numerous exclusive gameplay features such as aiming and shooting, reloading and a “search knife” function that aims the knife at the nearest enemy. Players can easily switch back and forth between the Wii Remote and Nunchuk and the Classic Controller at any time, depending on their preferred style of play.
When playing with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, the laser sight on guns is replaced with a reticle that flashes red (enemy) and green (no target) when a gun is drawn. The reticle is always present on screen, remaining a faint grey color that keeps track of the player's aim. This allows the player to aim and draw the gun, retaining the original aim.
The North American and European versions retain all the uncensored features designed for the game's original release.
The Wii Edition also includes the extra content from both the PlayStation 2 and PC versions. The special Wii edition also includes a trailer for Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. In addition, the Wii edition supports 480p and 16:9 widescreen, as opposed to the 480p and 4:3 letterbox format of the NTSC GCN version. The game also maintains a consistent 30FPS, as opposed to the PS3 version which had occurrences of slowdown in hectic moments. The visual quality remains very similar to the Gamecube iteration. Like the Gamecube version, the game features in-game cutscenes rather than the pre-rendered variety.
Game Rankings currently scores it 91% after 51 reviews. The Japanese magazine Famitsu reviewed the game, with two editors giving the game a perfect 10 score, and the remaining pair giving it a 9, resulting in a score of 38/40. The reviewers noted that the game's improved controls offer something fresh and different. One reviewer said that the game offers the feeling of being closer to the action as well as upping the tension. Multiple reviewers agreed that even those who own the original will find something fun and enjoyable in this version. British magazine NGamer gave the Wii edition a score of 96%. They praised the visuals, controls and features and commented on the fact that such an “exceptional package” was on sale for only 29 (£20). IGN gave the game a 9.0, stating it was the best version of the game, but that it didn't even push the Wii like it did with GameCube and PS2. The Wiire gave the version an A-, and an “Editor's Choice” award. GameSpot gave the Wii edition a score of 9.1 Got-Next

Nintendo found something great with the touch screen DS and motion sensors with the Wii.
Also to be honest I did not see a need to launch new consoles as the PS2 era ones were just fine.
so I'm makin due with a PS1.
what can I say? I have simple tastes!
Every game should have a big head mode and a Final Fight car destroying bonus level.
All modern laptop computers have LCD screens.
LCDs are immune to interference from magnetism.
Your laptop may have display screen problems, but the chances of them being caused by magnetism from the speakers is virtually nil.
And that's going to hurt them even worse. The "perception" is that the PS3 just doesn't have as many great or even good games to justify it's purchase. They counted on people buying in on the technology such as the Blue Ray and promises of great new releases in the future. While Blue Ray was attractive, the perception of too few games was at first correct, even through the first year of sales.
It's slowly coming around however, but we are now close to 1.5 years following release and many people have made their decision at this point. True, Blue Ray may continue to tip the scale on future buyers, it's a nice bundle, but gamers are also looking at their wallet and the immediate ROI in gameplay value (especially with the recent skyrocketing of standard expenses.) That's where the Wii and the XBOX 360 really hit the PS3 hard on competition.
It will be interesting to see how the failure of the PS3 impacts the future of the console market, as the console moves closer and closer to offering competative functionality with the standard home PC.
The quality and features of the device are tremendous. It even has a feature for donating excess CPU power to medical researchers when you're not using the system - which I think is kinda cool.
And the games are as impressive as any I've seen - though I'm no connoisseur.
The Sony Play Station 3 is the best Blu-ray player for the money. What many do not know is many set-top Blu-ray players will not play the BD-R and BD-RE versions of Blu-ray discs. These are the only discs consumers can buy as blanks and burn on available Blu-ray burners. The PS3 CAN play all variants of Blu-ray discs.
We had a Battlefield II squad for awhile that regularly played. Had a thread devoted to games that started it. Ping DocRock or Zena to see if anything is still happening.
