Keller cyclist's road rage brings trouble

ROANOKE — Call it two-wheel road rage.

A Keller bicyclist was cited for simple assault Saturday after he threw a water bottle at a motorist who he believed had cut him off.

Several cyclists were riding about 9:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Ashley Lane when a Toyota driven by a 43-year-old Trophy Club woman veered in front of them, according to a police report.

One bicyclist pursued the motorist and got her to stop a few blocks away, the report states.

The bicyclist threw the bottle, which went through a window and struck the woman.

“Cyclists can be so asinine. So many of them think they own the roads.”

I understand that we have to share the road with them, and I’m respectful of that but when you get into a situation where there may be a close call, etc, the biker should logically back off....two ton car vs 50 lb bike...no brainer there.

So what’s a “Trophy Club” woman? Is she some kind of topless dancer or something ???

Cyclists have as much right to be on the road as cars, and they are supposed follow the rules of the road like other vehicles. But, throwing your water bottle or anything else at someone is wrong, period. He should be cited. If she cut him off, she should be cited as well for reckless endangerment.

By the way, those of you who are teaching your children to RIDE on the WRONG side of the road against the traffic are also wrong and you’re going to get your kids (or the adults that are still doing it) KILLED.

You WALK on the opposite side of the road, against the traffic, you RIDE your BIKE WITH the flow of traffic.

Picture this:

Sitting in the turn lane of a busy street before dawn waiting for your light to turn green so you can turn. It turns green, you beging to move forward and then SLAM on your brakes because some idiot on a bike decides "hey! I don't have to pay attn to that RED light!!" Needless to say, if my sister, who was sitting next to me, had not seen the guy, he'd be dead.

Yes, and an even larger number of car drives are the same, if not worse. I'm not one of those spandex and helmet wearing bicycle freaks. But any time I try pedaling my old Schwinn to the grocery store, I'm thankful to arrive home alive.

How does a bicyclist catch up to a car and then how does he get her to stop?

I understand that some bicyclists can get going at a pretty good clip but still.
And then to get her to stop, what did he do, pull in front of her?

Sounds to me like he chased her to a stop sign or stop light, approached, and then threw the water bottle.

But what do I know. I wasn't there.

Bikes should be restricted to the sidewalk or other bike paths distinct from the road. If they insist on riding on roads, they should be forced to have PIP insurance.

Cyclists have as much right to be on the road as cars, and they are supposed follow the rules of the road like other vehicle.

But there is the rub. There are a lot of cyclists in my area, and they in a large majority expect you to share the road with them (which is fine) but at the same time have no regard for traffic laws. There is a four way stop at the corner by my house, and several times this spring/summer I have nearly run over a cyclist who made 0 attempt to stop for the sign. I also on a daily basis see them riding the shoulder on a busy road into town here and just blow through red lights like they don't exist. Once they start playing by the rules, I'll begin to respect their right to use the roads. Plain and simple, it works both ways.

There’s been a rash of bicycle fatalities here in Chicago. I steer wide around any bike on the road because you just don’t know if they will veer off. And if you splat a bike, you might as well just sign your house over to their heirs.

When at sea, and considering right-of-way, the rule of thumb is “yield to tonnage”. I’ve always tried my best to apply this while on terra firma as well.

Exactly. When a semi is coming through the intersection, as a pedestrian I yield to him no matter what the Walk/Don’t Walk sign says. lol

Got to giggle myself silly last week with the twin nuisance: a bicyclist who couldn’t follow rules AND was talking on a cellphone. I’m cruising up one of our little no account streets that only gets stoplight because of the grid, guy on a bike holding a cellphone to his ear decide to blow the stop sign, we both jam on the brakes so as to not kill the idiot but it turns out he’s holding the phone in his right hand, so he squeezes the left brake, front wheel stops and he flies over the handlebars, luckily far enough away that I don’t run him over. He got up and walked his bike away, and I laughed and laughed.

When do I get to have people arrested for people flinging stuff at me when I’m riding on the road and obeying all the rules? An object thrown from a car at 45 mph can be lethal. As you point out, notice how the woman who cut him off is not cited.

OK, as a longtime cyclist, I see both points of view.

Bikes are NOT to ride on sidewalks, those are for pedestrians. Bikes ride WITH the flow of traffic at the edge of the road or on a bike lane. Cyclists should obey traffic laws as if they were any other vehicle. Cyclists who ride like idiots all over should be corrected by cyclists who obey the laws; police should also ticket idiot bikers. Here in LA, the biggest problem is all the third-world bicyclists riding everywhere and in every direction.

That said, I have had many confrontations with autos, mainly from terrible, inattentive drivers, and I fully understand the impulse to chase down a car and throw a water bottle at the driver. I have had many fistfights with motorists right out in the street because they think it amusing to throw things at me or see how close they can ride past me. Considering how exposed you are on a bike, when a car nearly kills you, the adrenaline takes over and I don’t hesitate to chase down some idiot and give them an earful.

I was on a jury in an assault case involving two drivers. One was a high school football coach, all dressed up for dinner with his wife and friends in one car, and a burly private investigator that cut them off at an offramp.

There were some hand signals passed between drivers just before a red light stopped both cars. While stopped, the coach stepped out, went to the other driver, and clobbered the burly guy.

The fury’s first vote was 6 to 6, men voting one way and women voting the other.

After about 15 minutes of deliberation, the jury was called back by the judge ... who asked how things stood.

Upon hearing that it was a 6 to 6 vote, the judge declared a mistrial.

American justice ... happened.

I stopped riding my bike on public roadways and, eventually, altogether because too many drivers tried to kill me. No matter how far I rode on the right side of the street, it wasn’t far enough for many drivers.

I can sympathize with the cyclist.

If only bicyclists were properly armed with good firepower they wouldn’t have to rely on tossing a water bottle in such road rage incidents. /s

fwiw, I used to bike race (amateur only) during some of my 20s, and I did observe traffic laws carefully — but having to dodge insanely reckless Masshole drivers back in the ‘80s in eastern Mass. made me finally decide to give up the sport after a couple of overly close calls. There were times when I wanted to have my own shoulder-launched missiles for some of the more reckless and dangerous drivers, who are a great danger to themselves and everyone on the roads, not only bicyclists.

The name Trophy Club came from the city origin as a planned community. First step was having a golf course designed by famous golfer Ben Hogan. It was his first and last design. Then they built the community pool on the wrong plot of land and had to disband the home owners association.

It is a nice place to live despite the odd name.

Actually, this is utter BS. I'm a hardcore conservative and I've been riding bicycles for longer than you perhaps have been alive and it's got NOTHING to do whatsoever with "being green". It has to do with "low impact exercise" - and if you try to run someone off the road, you ought to get charged with attempted murder.

Stop.

Before you go any further, if they don’t follow the rules, call the cops on them and get them cited. Don’t act like an idiot yourself.

I drive an SUV, and I ride a lot, but I ride for exercise and it pisses me off too when I see someone breaking the law (on bicycles) as well as in cars.

So, it makes little sense that people in cars act aggressively with people on bikes when it’s not necessary.
