McCain fights for conservative support (Conservative activists say that's a big problem)

McCain fights for conservative support
From Dana Bash
CNN Correspondent

(CNN) -- Sen. John McCain took his "Straight Talk" straight to conservatives Thursday night as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee looked to shore up support from the party's base.

At a Cincinnati, Ohio, town hall meeting, McCain talked in depth about a bevy of issues, from Iraq to taxes. He reiterated his proposal for a gas tax holiday to help Americans deal with soaring prices at the pump.

He spoke for more than an hour but never mentioned issues that social conservatives skeptical of McCain want to hear about: his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage, or appointing conservative judges to the Supreme Court.

Conservative activists say that's a big problem.

"John McCain needs to talk about life more often, he needs to talk about marriage," activist Phil Burress said. "If the senator thinks he is going to run the campaign appealing to the middle by avoiding to talk about the social issues, he is going to lose Ohio."

Burress delivered that warning to McCain personally Thursday. He was one of a handful of Ohio conservatives invited to meet privately with the Arizona senator. Watch more on McCain's appeal to conservatives »

"He did take detailed notes and was very sincere ... heard us loud and clear," Burress said.

"I think it's just a normal thing to do. We all know that Ohio is a very crucial state," he said.

But he has reason to worry about conservatives coming out for him.

In a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll out this week, nearly one in five self-described members of the religious right said they would vote for someone other than McCain. The same amount are undecided.

Idiotic. It’s been months now. How can any conservative not support McCain when faced with the spectre of Obama and his vile wife ascending to power over this nation? And how any conservative could pull the lever for that ACLU assclown Bob Barr is beyond me. I never wanted McCain, but I will be damned if I will willingly assist the first Marxist takeover of the White House in our history.

That is John McCain.

And this is coming from a life long Republican.

Many family members have gotten phone calls from the RNC looking for a donation giving us the party line about how we have to defeat Obama and this is the most important election of our lifetime.

My mother said...”And the best the GOP could come up with was John McCain to get behind?”

Obviously the voters picked this guy and everyone quit without giving him a fight.

Not a dime to the RNC. Not until we see who he has in the VP slot...because McCain has already said before he isn’t interested in 2 terms.

This is a waste of time and money.

And if I'm getting tired of the POW guilt trip, I'm not the only one. He is owed honor and gratitude for his service and sacrifice. What else is he owed? If Obama selects a bonafide military man for his veep...

THANK YOU! Finally someone says exactly what we are faced with. After all the threads of many saying they could/would/ not vote for McCain, it all comes down to what the alternative is. He may not be our first choice or even in some cases our last choice, but dear God considering what's left how could anyone do anything else, but vote for him.

Guess I'd better get out and vote, eh?

Gotta be sure to send the message that conservatism really doesn't matter!

And how any conservative could pull the lever for that ACLU assclown Bob Barr is beyond me.

"Yeah, doodz, get with the program... 'conservative' now means 'Nanny-State, National ID, Big-Intrusive-Government, Statist!'"

I can't imagine voting for someone with a 98% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union! After all, they support things like what conservatism used to mean!

</sarc>

Besides, the ACLU points out that they don't agree with him on much, but they are glad to welcome him to fight for Americans' privacy (just like the ACLU has teamed up with NRA, the Christian Coalition, GOA, etc.) I suppose you want someone more to the left, eh?

I believe the answer is to mobilize to help some conservatives get elected to the House, and maybe help out a couple in the Senate. Write off McCain.

I have rec’d one call asking for money for that backstabbing pr*ck. I got the whole Bambi scare mongering story. I told the lady, “I was married, Bambi don’t scare me. Give me a reason to vote FOR the POS, I will.”

One very good reason would be a trustworthy, known, hard-right VP pick. Why do I keep getting this nagging feeling that he’s going with “Closet” Crist or “Light Loafers” Lindsay?

Conservatives supporting McCain are every bit as sick as women who endure abusive and cheating husbands while making excuses for his behavior.

McCain screwed the GOP every chance he got and now has GOP faithful begging to stand in line to bend over for him so he can do it again.

Simply amazing!

Yeah, hold your nose one more time.

Then do it again in 4 years. And again and again.

Every election is critical and every election is worth voting for whatever chump the GOP nominates....and as long as you believe that you’ll continue voting for chumps.

I cannot believe we are in this place.

I knew we were headed here long ago, and became sure of it in 2004, when I heard Republican after Republican grab the clothespin for the last time.

All the self-delusion and "Optimism" of the Ostrich Brigade can't change the reality that the nation's voters--including Republicans--are sick of what they perceive as conservatism. Unfortunately, true conservatism has been mugged and stuffed into a trunk by neocon liberalism, and we're getting the brickbats that should be directed at them! And people are turning to the far left for an alternative to the mere liberalism/statism of the current administration/Congress!

Calling him an assclown because he fought FOR US on one issue with the ACLU, is like calling a person who’s had one drink of alcohol in their entire life, a drunk!

When conservatives like me have been saying we won't vote for McCain, he has a problem. He needs to shore up the base? He should have attended to it during the primaries. And all I've heard about his economic policies is that they're Algore Lite - carbon trading, more regulation, higher fees and whatnot. Its not a terribly effective way of distinguishing himself from the other candidate, Obama. He's needs to declare he's for freedom, faith, family and opportunity. Get rid of the Leftist New Age nonsense.

I'm sorry, but RINO's and moderates put the republican party in this position, you're going to have to live with it! You would have thought the dumbasses might have gotten the message after 2006, but no they have led the nation down this path of a namby-pamby moderate socialist scheme.

Just one short year ago......

Poll Update: Thompson leads in New GOP poll

Posted on June 20th, 2007 by Jason Easley in 2008 Election Coverage, All News, Government News, US News, US PoliticsRead 1,171 times.

The avalanche of momentum for soon to be declared GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson of Tennessee continued in this week’s Rasmussen Reports poll. Last week, Thompson was tied with Giulaini at 24%, but this week he has moved ahead of the former New York City mayor 28%-27%. His lead is still within the margin of error, which is 4 points, so the net result is a statistical tie.

Mitt Romney and Sen. John McCain continued their slides closer to also ran status this week by falling into a third place tie with 10% each. This week marks the first time all year that someone besides Giuliani is at the top of the Rasmussen Republican weekly poll.

Giuliani remains the candidate with the highest approval rating in either party. Eighty two percent of Republicans approve of Giuliani, and only 15% of those asked have an unfavorable opinion of him. Thompson has a 59% approval rating, while Romney and McCain bring up the rear at 56% and 55% respectively. There is a simple reason why voters like Giuliani, but they aren’t giving him their full support. He isn’t conservative enough. Only 21% of those surveyed viewed Giuliani as politically conservative, but double that number said that they viewed Fred Thompson as a conservative. The Rasmussen Reports polls are a little different from most others because they take into account the ability of Independents to vote in the primary of their choice in several states.

This poll includes both Republicans and Independents who say that they are likely to vote in the Republican primary, but when the Independents are taken out of the poll, Thompson’s support increases. Among only Republicans, Thompson leads Giuliani 29%-24%. Romney and McCain remain virtually unchanged with each receiving 11% and 10% respectively. Even though voters don’t know exactly where he stands on the issues, Fred Thompson has an advantage because he has been able to sit back and see what kind of candidate Republican voters want. In my opinion, if Thompson runs a very conservative campaign, he has a strong shot at the nomination.

I think Thompson would probably lose to any of the Democrats in November, but if Bloomberg enters the race as an independent, enough support could be split, so that if the conservatives came out strong they could put him in the White House. It is still uncertain if this support of Thompson is based on actual support for the candidate, or just a protest vote against what the voters have been offered as alternatives. Fred Thompson is going through his flavor of the month phase right now, but it is clear that GOP voters want a more conservative candidate than Giuliani, and if Thompson offers that, he will be a major player in this nominating process.

Agreed and hoping that the SCOTUS ruling yesterday was the spark the Republican Party needed to get things going. Seriously. Things have been so freaking depressing because of this election cycle and the douchebag we are left with.

However, the GOP once had the Senate, The House, and The White House and did ZILCH.

Screwing us into this corner. People are afraid to run as real conservatives and act like it in D.C.

Why can’t the GOP find as many radical right wingers to become popular as the DNC can with their party. They always seem to win and the media winds up loving all of them?

When the far left fringe claimed Gore wasn’t a true enough hippy, was no different from Bush, etc, we could hardly believe their bad judgement.

They threw their little tantrum and votes to unelectable lunatics like Nader, they lost because of it, and Kyoto Gore went back to Tennessee to follow his true calling of eating 5 gallon tubs of ice cream and growing a beard like the Unabomber.

Yet when our fringe throws the exact same tantrum with the exact same reasoning, handing the election to Barack Hussein Hamas somehow becomes a dignified and principled stand?

Makes sense to me.
