Tropical ocean sucks up vast amounts of ozone [& methane; Al Gore not amused]
New Scientist ^ | 26 June 2008 | Nora Schultz

An important mechanism for sucking ozone and methane out of the atmosphere has been discovered over the tropical Atlantic. The finding reveals how the two greenhouse gasses are kept in check by natural chemical reactions.

The data collected in Cape Verde, off the western coast of Africa, suggests that 50% more ozone is being destroyed above the tropical Atlantic Ocean than previously thought, because of halogens released by the seawater.

The process also increases the amount of methane pumped out of the lower atmosphere by up to 12% each day. It could occur in tropical oceans worldwide and could considerably improve the forecasts generated by the models used to study climate change.

"At the moment this is a good news story: more ozone and methane being destroyed than we previously thought," says Alastair Lewis of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science in Leeds, UK.

Really, I thought there was a 'consensus' here already! 5 Billion years of Earth history vs. 20 some odd years of Algore consensus ... seems that nature wins yet again, much to Algore's chagrin .......

The Consensical Scientists were trying to figure out why
their Holy Climate Models can’t even predict the past,
and stumbled into it. They were probably looking for
some other smoking gun at the time.

They will never get around to step 4.
1. Is the climate changing excessively?
2. Is the change human-caused?
3. Can anything humans now do halt or reverse it?
4. Is there any chance of getting China and Russia to do so?

Too little, and way too late, but this seems to seriously damage the theory that man made CFCs are the culprits creating the ozone hole over the south pole.

There was also a peer reviewed paper in the 80's which correlated the ozone hole with the ocean currents. No one could ever predict the size of the ozone hole using industrial output of CFCs, but the paper found a strong correlation on the direction of ocean currents in tropical waters with the size of the hole. Combine these two findings, and it looks like the ocean was severly underestimated in its effect on ozone, and the ozone hole.

This is slightly on topic. If hydrogen cars are put into large scale production, what effect does their only exhaust emission, water vapor, have on the environment?
Water vapor is by far the largest the greenhouse gas currently in the environment. It seems that adding millions of tons of water vapor a day to the environment would increase the greenhouse effect. It certainly would make the earth a very humid place all the time.
Wouldn’t it be possible that on a cold, clear, winter’s day, for the roadways to be coated with ice caused by hydrogen cars’ emissions freezing as they condensed and fell onto the roadways?

The Global Hot Air Cultists are pretending not to know
this until all the petro cars are replaced by H2 cars,
then they’ll “discover” it, and take your H2 car away, too.

It's been some time since I took chemistry but my recollection is that the majority of present vehicle exhaust is water vapor.

I’m glad you weren’t so rude as to mention that during the last ten years of Algore’s 20 year consensus the planet has actually been cooling. I applaud your civility. ;^)

If you burn 228g of octane (C8H18), you will get 704g of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 324g of water (H2O).

On the other hand, if you burn 228 g of hydrogen (H2), you will get 2052g of water (H2O).

> 5. Has the climate ever been static?

Of course.
It was always “normal” prior to AGA (the Al Gore Age).

Wyoming was never a tropical region filled with dinosaurs.
How do we know? There weren’t any humans to blame for the
warming. The coal under WY was planted there by aliens.
We don’t even want to consider the heresy that it
might not even be “fossil” fuel.

Ice Ages are a myth promoted by studios trying to
sell movie DVDs. Frozen mammoth carcasses are merely
warnings of the hazards of warming.

Well, I’ve gotta run. Gotta go believe several more
contradictory things before morning, then cook some
climate data for Hansen.
