Tobacco ban wafts into Amsterdam pot shops

Cannabis lovers will be exempted from a public smoking ban in the Netherlands from next week onwards. Marijuana is technically illegal in the Netherlands but has been decriminalised, with small quantities sold in coffee shops, making them big attractions for tourists.

Cutting the Cannabis with tobacco which some smokers do, could land the shop owners a fine of up to 2,400 euros (3,778 US dollars).

Not a problem, says coffee shop owner Arjan Roskam whose marijuana strains have won 31 Cannabis Cup prizes over the years and who count Hollywood celebrities, members of Europe's royal families, lawyers, judges and police officers among his clients. The shop oqner says, "The English, Americans and Japanese are our biggest customers. Already for a very, very long time, they don't smoke tobacco because tobacco is the number one killer on this planet."

Wow...with that, truth not only is now stranger than fiction, it’s also taken a triple gainer off the cliffs of credibility. Thank you, fiction, for making sense.

I am smirking, because I am Dutch. I and my friends addressed this ‘problem’ already a couple of times. It’s beyond any rational discussion. Fact of the matter is, that in all coffee shops (sic) smoking of cannabis mixed with tobacco will continue, without fines, even if:
a) cannabis in itself is illegal, as well as the growing of it;
b) smoking in public places is too, and will be fined in all other bars and halls.
I could go on. E.g. at big dance events, young kids can not only drink themselves into delirium, but also have their ‘ecstasy’ pills tested by government-appointed officials, to find out whether these are mixed with dangerous other substances. Esp. the latter is diabolic: kids get the impression that if the government tests and says OK, then the use of MDMA (ecstasy) is harmless. Which they are not: it’s a fact that regular use of XTC causes irreparable damage to the serotonergic system in the brain, and will burden the user with major depression for the rest of his or her life.
There are short movies flying around at Youtube with youngsters in First Aid tents at such parties, who had three or four dozens of beers, combined with numerous ecstasy pills. What they go through is a prolonged type of epileptic fit, combined with total dehydration. For as long as this lasts they are beyond help, and only Divine help can prevent them from dying on the spot.
Our society finds this ‘normal’.

I forgot: the production and possession of XTC is prohibited in Holland and will land you in front of a judge (normally).
Now, if anyone still can make sense of all of this... I am pretty desperate (in an intellectual way).
A13.

The disconnect of the Nanny State mentality.........

libertarian27 is correct, smoke is smoke. If my tobacco smoke is so “dangerous” to others so than is any other smoke generated from the burning of any other organic substance.

I spell it H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E OR I-N-C-O-N-S-I-S-T-E-N-T. That’s the problem with our laws.

Silly Gabz,

Smoke isn’t smoke./s

Here in Ottawa, they have diesel buses belching smoke at the bus stop and bus stations, but light a cigarette within 27 feet of that bus stop and you’ll be fined.

We know, but maybe some nanny state liberal will do a google search, and find our posts, and stop and think, for just one second.......

Ah, forget it.

Good idea!

Light one, blow it out, and repeat.

Extinguished candles smoke something fierce!

Yep. When will people clue in to the fact that health is not a factor in these bans?

California has a problem with redwood smoke, maybe they’ll ban that, too.
