Beach pizza shop employee fatally shoots robber, police say
The Virginian-Pilot ^ | June 29, 2008 | Patrick Wilson

Posted on 06/29/2008 2:33:18 AM PDT by csvset

VIRGINIA BEACH

An employee of a Virginia Beach pizza restaurant shot and killed a masked robber who had come in the back of the shop to rob it Saturday night, police said.

The shooting happened about 10:08 p.m. at Dominick's Pizza & Pasta, in the Timberlake Shopping Center in the 4200 block of Holland Road.

Employees had opened the back door to let a breeze come in, and the robber came in the door to the kitchen and pointed a gun at them, said Sgt. Rene Ball of Virginia Beach police.

An employee then shot and killed the robber, she said. No one else was shot.

Detectives and forensic analysts are on the scene this morning to interview store employees and investigate. There was apparently one customer in the restaurant, Ball said.

The name of the man killed was not immediately released.

It seems to be cyclic.
Some large pizza chains don’t allow guns (Pizza Hut for one), not in the stores and not with the drivers. Bad guys learn that pizza shops and drivers are easy marks - until they try it at the smaller operations. A couple robberies with the bad guy ending up dead and the robberies stop until a new crop of bad guys start.

How stupid to be killed trying to stick up a pizza joint :-(

One of the first rules of security by any franchise operation is: Don’t unnecessarily open the back door, especially for ventilation. It’s an open invite for a burglar.

In the good old days the very last place to hold up was a pizza parlor. The mob was pretty unforgiving.

A little bit of additional information on this from another source:

Police Beach pizza parlor worker kills would-be robber TOP STORIES WVEC.com News for Hampton Roads, Virginia

(edit)

Workers at Dominick's Pizza and Pasta in the Timberlake Shopping Center on Holland Road told 13News a masked man came in through a back entrance brandishing a gun and demanding cash.

According to employees, a worker opened the safe and took out a loaded revolver instead of money.

The worker reportedly returned to where the alleged thief was and opened fire.

Police say the shooting happened around 10:00 p.m. Saturday, and that workers called 911 at 10:08.

By the time officers arrived the masked man was already dead.

Police have not identified the suspect, and have not said whether charges will be filed against the employee.

What ‘victim’? All I see here are the laws of natural selection extracting worthless DNA from the gene pool. I think prosecutors and ambulance chasers are going to have a much more difficult time filing such a suit.

“Don’t unnecessarily open the back door, especially for ventilation”

Have you ever worked in bakery before? In addition, the were close to closing where trips in and out the back door were probably necessary for closing procedures. I think the owner should be given a tax-break for relieving the tax-payer of a future judicial/penal burden. Moreover, it shows the ultimate respect for his crew by giving them the means to protect themselves. I’ll bet they do a whole lot more bidness now.

Yes, I *know* this! LOL

Anyody who grew up in the town where there was a ‘mob’ presence knows that the very last place you would rob was a place run by the boys. If the management didn’t ventilate you there were always a couple of boys having dinner in the dining room who would.

Growing up the safest place in town was the area near the pizza parlor and bowling alley. Also, the area around where the boys and their families lived.

A few years ago I was flying into Las Vegas, sitting next to a guy and his adorable Asian wife (who had held his panama hat in her lap for the entire trip.) We never talked for the entire trip until we had to circle Las Vegas for an hour. It turned out he was from Providence, RI, home of the Raymond Patriaca family - the *alledged* head of the mob.It was clear to me from talking with him that he had connections so I mentioned 3 or 4 names of our local guys. He looked surprised and he elbowed his wife and said, “Hey, she knows the boyz!” He was right. That’s all I’m going to say.

Just being a bit contrarian... However, I was making the point from a sole-proprietor POV as I believe that particular business happens to be. In addition, they were closing the store at the time. I as well have experience in the food franchise sector and not all rules made by the home office are necessarily well thought out, efficient and ultimately sacrosanct in the eyes of many effective managers. Sometimes it is hard to fathom that some of these companies still make decent profits even ‘in-spite’ themselves and their compulsion towards PC home office dictates. If I am not mistaken, the major pizza retailers don’t allow employees proper personal defense (ie guns). I am sure you are quite aware of that policy. It is my experience, if someone wants to rob a pizza joint or rob a pizza guy, they are gonna do it one way or another.

“Back in another life, I managed a pizza joint. Back door security was always enforced.”

Bottom line is, the owner was enforcing proper back door security when released that protoplasm from this temporal plane.

Fyi... It was the actual owner of the establishment that did the much needed dispatching.
