Will Earth's Future Be a FROZEN One? 27-Jun-2008

...rather than a hot one? -

The future? The disappearance of sun spots was the hot topic at a recent international solar conference held at Montana State University. For the past two years, the sun has undergone a phase of relative inactivity, meaning usual solar phenomena such as sun flares, sun spots, and solar eruptions have all but disappeared. "It's a dead face," researcher Saku Tsuneta says of the solar surface. Tsuneta is with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and was one of the participants at the MSU conference The good news is that without such intense solar activity disruptions to space technology and even our beloved gadgets here on earth have been minimal. While this provides some relief to those of us whose cell phones dropped calls at the tiniest solar flare, scientists are concerned that this means bigger things to come for Earth's climate.

Dana Longcope, a solar physicist at MSU, explains that the sun generally runs on an 11-year cycle and that there is usually a minimum of activity as the cycles change. The last cycle peak was in 2001 and the next cycle is predicted to peak around 2012. The sun is now as inactive as it was two years ago, and scientists aren't sure why. Some have even suggested that the inactivity portents the beginning of a new ice age.

Geophysicist Phil Chapman, the first Australian NASA astronaut, confirms that there are indeed no sun spots currently on the solar surface. He also notes that the earth has cooled by about 0.7 degrees Celsius between January 2007 and January 2008, and says, "This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record, and it puts us back to where we were in 1930."

Oleg Sorokhtin, a fellow at the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, is also certain that it's an indication of a coming cooling period. He warns that climate change caused by man is "a drop in the bucket" compared to the fierce cold that can inactive solar phases can bring.

In fact, 350 years ago, the sun experienced its longest recorded period of inactivity lasting over 50 years. During the same period, approximately 1650-1700, the earth experienced a "mini" ice age. Some scientists maintain that this was only a coincidence, but others are not as sure.

Dr. Sorokhtin's advice: "Stock up on fur coats."

You know I read somewhere that the equator used to be the polar ice caps and vice versa. I wonder if the volcanoes under the ice caps had anything to do with it or if it was a major asteroid cause it to spin?

I am beginning ti tire of worrying about the future of America, and Earth. I think the nuts, and Dims, have won. Since I believe we are about to see a huge decline in society, I have decided to enjoy today, and let the future be what it will.

Wacky weather indeed...We had 100 yesterday and it is supposed to hit 94 today. Of course next week the temperature should revert to the mean.

I agree. There seems to be a fad with constantly worrying about things that are out of our control. Like you, I’m done with it too. I have enough angst in my life without taking on something like “climate.” Too old for that nonsense.

Only to the degree of continental drift moving continents from lower latitudes to higher ones. The poles have always been colder than the equator.

Just last week I watched a fascinating documentary on the History Channel called "How the Earth was Made." It covered 4.5 billion years of the planet's history, including one point where all the continents had converged at the south Pole, causing the entire planet to ice over. It blew enormous holes in every one of these nonsensical "climate change" theories without even intending to. The bottom line is that the Earth is currently between ice ages, which happen about every 10,000 years or so. The era of Humans is very limited here as it is, so drive your SUV all you want to, it's not going to make a hill of beans worth of difference.

I just went over to history.com to look it up, and had to wade through two pages of "Earth in Crisis!" "The End is Near!" crap before I could find the listing. Unfortunately, it's not playing again anytime in the next two weeks. I recommend it.

Core samples taken from the arctic show fossil remains of tropical plants and animals. Among the things they found:

* Evidence of ice in the Arctic Ocean was found much earlier than formerly believed, about 45 million years ago;
* At one time about 55 million years ago, Arctic temperatures rose to subtropical levels (about 23 degrees Centigrade);
* At one time about 49 million years ago, the Arctic was green, with fresh surface water and large amounts of fern covering the water, at least in summer months.

The more 'they' look, the more they find out that they don't know what the he!! is going on with the climate.

Colder? Tell us about it. Here in Alaska we are experiencing the coldest summer I’ve seen in 30 years. Only a few days have we not had the heater going. Some of you folks from the south would think it was winter.

I think there is something to this lack of sunspots thing. Makes sense, as huge as the sun is in comparison to the earth, any slight change on the sun would have great repercussions here on earth. When the sun sneezes we all catch cold.

Here in Seattle we are going through our second consecutive day of record temps - near 95 degrees.

On the other hand, for 100,000 of the last 120,000 years, there was a half mile of glacial ice directly on top of the place where I am now typing.

All things considered, maybe global warming is not such a bad deal.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

It could not possibly be as you say because the equator is a line cirling the full circumference of the globe while the polar ice caps are like small circles at opposing points on the globe. Just what is it you really mean?

The Earth is a circle. The area of earth that is now covered in ice, was once an area that is where the equator is.

We could draw a line going in a cross around the earth just as the equator is now, except the polar ice caps would on either side of the middle. Basically, tilt it sideways.

Read “Fallen Angels” by Niven/Pournelle. They construct a future where the looney Greens are in charge. By then, there is an ice sheet covering all of Canada and advancing on US cities (like Minneapolis and Milwaukee). Despite this, the Government is still worried about global warming, so people can’t burn coal to save themselves from freezing to death. Very scary.

Thank goodness for global warming. What with record snowfalls in the Rockies and the ice in Antartica 40% greater than last year we'd be in a heap of trouble if we ever get global cooling.
