As Barack Obama's candidacy comes under increasing scrutiny, his account of his religious upbringing deserves careful attention for what it tells us about the candidate's integrity.
Obama asserted in December, "I've always been a Christian," and he has adamantly denied ever having been a Muslim. "The only connection I've had to Islam is that my grandfather on my father's side came from that country [Kenya]. But I've never practiced Islam." In February, he claimed: "I have never been a Muslim. … other than my name and the fact that I lived in a populous Muslim country for 4 years when I was a child [Indonesia, 1967-71] I have very little connection to the Islamic religion."
"Always" and "never" leave little room for equivocation. But many biographical facts, culled mainly from the American press, suggest that, when growing up, the Democratic candidate for president both saw himself and was seen as a Muslim.
Obama's Kenyan birth father: In Islam, religion passes from the father to the child. Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. (1936–1982) was a Muslim who named his boy Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. Only Muslim children are named "Hussein".
Obama's Indonesian family: His stepfather, Lolo Soetoro, was also a Muslim. In fact, as Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng explained to Jodi Kantor of the New York Times: "My whole family was Muslim, and most of the people I knew were Muslim." An Indonesian publication, the Banjarmasin Post reports a former classmate, Rony Amir, recalling that "All the relatives of Barry's father were very devout Muslims."

The Catholic school: Nedra Pickler of the Associated Press reports that "documents showed he enrolled as a Muslim" while at a Catholic school during first through third grades. Kim Barker of the Chicago Tribune confirms that Obama was "listed as a Muslim on the registration form for the Catholic school." A blogger who goes by "An American Expat in Southeast Asia" found that "Barack Hussein Obama was registered under the name ‘Barry Soetoro' serial number 203 and entered the Franciscan Asisi Primary School on 1 January 1968 and sat in class 1B. … Barry's religion was listed as Islam."
Barack Obama's public school in Jakarta
The public school: Paul Watson of the Los Angeles Times learned from Indonesians familiar with Obama when he lived in Jakarta that he "was registered by his family as a Muslim at both schools he attended." Haroon Siddiqui of the Toronto Star visited the Jakarta public school Obama attended and found that "Three of his teachers have said he was enrolled as a Muslim." Although Siddiqui cautions that "With the school records missing, eaten by bugs, one has to rely on people's shifting memories," he cites only one retired teacher, Tine Hahiyari, retracting her earlier certainty about Obama's being registered as a Muslim.
Koran class: In his autobiography, Dreams of My Father, Obama relates how he got into trouble for making faces during Koranic studies, thereby revealing he was a Muslim, for Indonesian students in his day attended religious classes according to their faith. Indeed, Obama still retains knowledge from that class: Nicholas D. Kristof of the New York Times, reports that Obama "recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them [to Kristof] with a first-rate accent."
Mosque attendance: Obama's half-sister recalled that the family attended the mosque "for big communal events." Watson learned from childhood friends that "Obama sometimes went to Friday prayers at the local mosque." Barker found that "Obama occasionally followed his stepfather to the mosque for Friday prayers." One Indonesia friend, Zulfin Adi, states that Obama "was Muslim. He went to the mosque. I remember him wearing a sarong" (a garment associated with Muslims).
Piety: Obama himself says that while living in Indonesia, a Muslim country, he "didn't practice [Islam]," implicitly acknowledging a Muslim identity. Indonesians differ in their memories of him. One, Rony Amir, describes Obama as "previously quite religious in Islam."
Obama's having been born and raised a Muslim and having left the faith to become a Christian make him neither more nor less qualified to become president of the United States. But if he was born and raised a Muslim and is now hiding that fact, this points to a major deceit, a fundamental misrepresentation about himself that has profound implications about his character and his suitability as president.

If the Obama campaign and MSM are going to insist that Obama was really a Christian when he attended the Catholic school as a small boy, would they care to show when and where he was baptized as a boy?
Has he been baptized and confirmed at his new church of 20 years? Do they even have such rituals at that church?
Or is it considered just another “flag pin” sign for OTHERS of how religious you are?

The thing that blew my mind was the WaPo article used the the Swift Boaters as a previous example of an unfair attack on a Democrat candidate. I found Swift Boater = Freepers as the convincing factor that made me believe the Freepers.
One fact is totally clear about the SwiftBoater attacks. Kerry has never revealed all of his military records. The so called Swift Boaters time and time again asked Kerry to allow the press to look at his military records. And Kerry a couple of times said he would.. Then went back on his word.
I served in the military in the 1960s.. I would not for a moment have any reason to deny anyone permisison to look at my military records. My military records would show when I went in .. when I was honorably discharged and that I got promotions at about the normal rate. There were no real commendations and no repremands what so ever. The conclusion of anyone who knows military records is that I did what I was told to do when I was told to do it. Never got in trouble and was just a normal ordinary soldier.
So what is in Kerry’s records that cause him to refuse to allow access? IT can’t be that he was a good trooper who served his time and then out out with an honorable discharge. If what Kerry claimed about his military service was true, then he would have no reason to not allow the media to look at his records.
If Kerry had been telling the truth about his military service he would have gotten and handed out copies of his military records. Only a liar needs to keep people from seeing the proof of the matter.
My Dad spent a lot of his life in law enforcement. He used to say that innocent men never object to the cops confirming that he was on the phone talking to his wife when the crime occured. Only a liar’s wife would exercise her right to refuse to testify against her husband.
So when the so called WaPo expert says this FR stuff was on the same level as the Swiftboat accusations about Kerry, I would bet a lot that the FR accusations about Obama are true and their “EXPERT” fact checker damn well knows it.

Perhaps they should start first, by (re)educating Muslims throughout the world who actually believe - because of his Muslim genetic HERITAGE, by way of his Muslim father; that Obama is indeed a Muslim; no matter by what name he calls 'Allah'.
More immediately; these totalitarian-loving, Obama devotees may want to hunt down the brother of the woman who was denied a seat behind Obama last week; beause she was wearing her hijab. (. . .and probably already have.) Doubt they missed the verbal gaff made by the brother when he said; he could not understand why Obama. . ."as a Muslim", would refuse his Obama-supporting, sister a public seat behind him.
(Wondered if they approached Fox News to insure that this mention of mistaken religious identity was not replayed; lest the public get confused'.) Of course, there was never a comment about the brother's perception; rather, only his Muslim sister's rejection.)
All to say, NOT that Obama IS a Muslim (though, Islam, perhaps less than a few degrees separation from Obama's own Black Liberation 'Theology' - a 'Christianity' so-called' - and so perhaps; an acceptable(convenient?) 'shoe to wear'. And we are continually challenged - and in by turn; 'we' challenge others' to take a 'look/see' at Obama, through Muslim eyes. And our own; after considering all possibilities.
Meantime; the Obamanation Delegation fearing a truth of the 'mind's eye'; is determined to 'pluck it out'; when and wherever they see it and by whatever means possible.
A claim like that will need something to back it up. Without it, it is just another whisper campaign rumor.
As to the other issues of Obama’s heritage, Michael Medved finally put it back in the Obama campaign’s lap by pointing out that they deny ANY Islamic education growing up despite his own remarks on the record. What is the Obama campaign afraid of in acknowledging that at least some of the statements in the disputed email are true?
