Gannett Co. Inc. said Friday it is reorganizing its U.S. Community Publishing division, reducing the number of regional groups by one to four and seeing off two retiring top executives.

Under the new structure, five regional groups have been reorganized into four: East, South, Interstate and West.

Interstate will be headed by Senior Group President Barbara A. Henry until Aug. 1, when she is retiring, Gannett said. Henry, 55, has also been president and publisher of The Indianapolis Star since 2000. She began her career at Gannett as a reporter at the Reno (Nev.) Gazette-Journal in 1974, and later became publisher of The Des Moines Register.

Also retiring is Denise H. Ivey, who is a group president of the Mid-South Group, and president and publisher of The Courier-Journal in Louisville, KY. Until her scheduled Jan. 1 retirement, Ivey will be the chairman of the Louisville business. A success to her as president and publisher will be named shortly, Gannett said.

East will continue to be headed by Senior Group President W. Curtis Riddle, who also is publisher of The News Journal in Wilmington, Del.

Heading South will be Group President Carol O. Hudler, who had been a group president of the Sun Coast group, and is president and publisher of The News-Press in Fort Myers, Fla.

The West group president will be Laura L. Hollingsworth, president and publisher of The Des Moines Register. Formerly known as the Pacific Group, its headquarters will move from Phoenix to Des Moines.

Gannett said The Arizona Republic, The Honolulu Advertiser and the Tucson Citizen will report directly to Robert J. Dickey, president of U.S. Community Publishing.

"This reorganization both refines our structure and puts our top people in key jobs with expanded responsibilities around the country," Dickey said in a statement.

Dickey also announced two executive appointments.

Evan Ray, who had been CFO of Phoenix Newspapers Inc. and group controller of the former Pacific Group, was named senior vice president/finance and operations of U.S. Community Publishing.

Michelle Krans was named senior vice president/strategy and development for U.S. Community Publishing. She had been president and publisher of The Desert Sun in Palm Springs, Calif and group vice president of the Pacific Group.

Replacing her as president and publisher of the Desert Sun is Richard A. Ramhoff, who was also named a group vice president of the West Group. He had been president and publisher of the Lansing (Mich.) State Journal and a group vice president of the Sun Coast Group.

For all the News Media people who are being ‘rightsized’, understand this:

WE DO NOT BUY YOUR PAPERS BECAUSE WE ARE SICK OF YOUR INCREDIBLY BIASED EDITORS.

That’s it in a nutshell. Pure & Simple.

I used to enjoy reading the paper(s), yes, more than one, every day.

Now I buy NO daily papers. NONE. ZERO. ZILCH. NADA. NULL SET. GOOSE EGG.

I do buy the Sunday paper for the advertising inserts and THROW AWAY everything else without so much as a glance.

Give me an honest newspaper and I will support it. As for the current trash, I’ll pass.

"This reorganization both refines our structure and puts our top people in key jobs with expanded responsibilities around the country," Dickey said in a statement.

"The bottom line," Dickey continued, "is that these folks will now be working 70 hours weeks instead of 60."

I been d'ere, I done that.
