It surprised me, all right, but quite a few of the Connecticut Republicans I spoke to at the annual Prescott Bush Awards Dinner (June 27th) would not have a problem with "Independent Democrat" Joe Lieberman as Republican John McCain's vice presidential running mate.
The only ones who dismissed the scenario of McCain being the first Republican Presidential nominee since Abraham Lincoln in 1864 to select a Democratic running mate (Andrew Johnson of Tennessee, who had broken with fellow Southern Democrats over secession) were those who consider themselves committed conservatives.

Shall we break out all the “Sore/Loserman” tee shirts?
While I admire some things about Joe Lieberman, this would be a bad idea.
Congressman Eric Cantor (R-VA) would be a much better choice. He has much of Lieberman’s appeal, but would be acceptable to conservatives, as well.
Ann Coulter, VP.
Oh yeah, the sponsor of the moronic Cap (Tax) and Trade Bill....
Ok, let’s decide now: ... it’s Sarah Palin!
...or her male counterpart...John Bolton!!!
My fellow Connecticut GOP members must have lost their sanity.
I like Lieberman but I don’t want him for the Republican V.P. selectee.I want a real Republican conservative or thats all folks.
I’m from Ct.
It’s very hard to distinguish a Connecticut Republican from a Democrat to the right of Moveon, org. They’re happy to grow government and raise taxes.
I am with you.. Sarah for VPOTUS,
McCain should choose Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice for Vice-President. That would probably take votes from some Obama and some Hillary supporters.
Other than the fact she wont have any part of it
As democrats go, Joe is among the best. He is still, however, a freakin’ democrat. No thanks
Bingo. At this point in time I'm guessing that I will hold my nose (or maybe wear a gas mask) and vote for McCaine, hopefully with a real conservative on the ticket with him. If he picks a D@mocrat (or 'independent') for VP, I simply will not bother. At that point, he can count on the D@mocrats & 'independents' to vote for him, for all the good it will do - and we'll all see what happens...
Pro-partial-birth-infanticide Lieberman won’t get the pro-life vote, which is one of the deciding factors.
If Senator McCain picks a liberal like Lieberman, or Charlie Crist, as running mate, we can’t trust him to pick originalist judges, either.
“Here’s a wacky idea, put at least one republican on the republican ticket.”
Haha... that would be so much more funny if it wasn’t so disgustingly true.
I don’t care if he chooses the Lord God Almighty as his running mate; I wouldn’t vote for McCain for dogcatcher.
I used to have some respect for Lieberman, he’s obviously intelligent, and it took courage to split from the Dem party.
But since he’s gone over to Al Gore’s carbon carousel because he’s obviously jealous of how much ManBearPig is making off his scam, Joey is just another POS sellout twerp as far as I’m concerned.
“Connecticut GOP: Lieberman for Veep?”
Oh do it Juan, just so that I can watch yer supporters here and elsewhere try to spin Lieberman into a conservative. That alone would be worth you kicking those gullible ones in the grapes yet again.
Pretty please?
No.
The last time McCain and Loserman got together, they co-sponsored a bill that would outlaw gun shows.
No thanks.
“While I admire some things about Joe Lieberman, this would be a bad idea”
Agreed.
That isn’t to say that Lieberman might warrant some other position in a McCain administration. But not the VP. There is a very possible chance that whomever McCain chooses as VP may end up ascending to the presidency. For that reason, he must choose more carefully.
By the way, I’m _in_ Connecticut. I didn’t vote for Lieberman like many “Republicans” here. I’m guessing that most of them did so with more intent on defeating the leftie Ned LaMont rather than electing “an independent”. I joined the 10% or so who actually voted for the Republican candidate (what WAS his name?).
Imagine this in YOUR state: the Republican candidate garnering the grand total of 10% of the registered voters!

Oh Lord no.
Lieberman is in many ways a decent and respect worthy man but I can’t vote for McCain if he has a pro-abortion Democrat as his VP no matter how honorable the guy might be about national security and so on. No way. I’m stretched to my limit voting for McCain as it is.
Connecticut Republicans are basically Democrats in any other part of the country.
Well, it passes the “reaching across the aisle” test, so, maybe.
I suspect that the novelty of the GOP running conservatives has worn thin.
Pity.
I’m not voting for that ticket.
McCain/Lieberman I mean. Cantor is fine.
Lieberman, Bloomberg or any other non-Republican are deal breakers for me.
