Amid policy disputes, Qaeda grows in Pakistan

WASHINGTON: Late last year, top Bush administration officials decided to take a step they had long resisted. They drafted a secret plan to authorize the Pentagon's Special Operations forces to launch missions into the snow-capped mountains of Pakistan to capture or kill top leaders of Al Qaeda.

Intelligence reports for more than a year had been streaming in about Osama bin Laden's terror network rebuilding in the Pakistani tribal areas, a problem that had been exacerbated by years of missteps in Washington and the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, sharp policy disagreements, and turf battles between American counterterrorism agencies.

The new plan, outlined in a highly classified Pentagon order, was designed to eliminate some of those battles. And it was meant to pave an easier path into the tribal areas for American commandos, who for years have bristled at what they see as Washington's risk-averse attitude toward Special Operations missions inside Pakistan. They also argue that catching Bin Laden will come only by capturing some of his senior lieutenants alive.

But more than six months later, the Special Operations forces are still waiting for the green light. The plan has been held up in Washington by the very disagreements it was meant to eliminate. A senior Defense Department official said there was "mounting frustration" in the Pentagon at the continued delay........"

Meanwhile Seymour Hersh has a hit piece:

Preparing the Battlefield The Bush Administration steps up its secret moves against Iran.

It is hard to fight the War on Terror with Traitors in the Media.

They should find those who leaked the info charge them with treason, and put them on trial, along with the NYT, who, I am sure was warned that publishing the article will damage natioanal security and help our enemies.

The Hersh piece actually mentions that he got some of his classified info from a Democrat Senator.

They should all be charged with treason.

That is the only way these leaks for political purposes,— to make the Bush administration look bad, even if it helps our enemies, — would be stopped.

***It is hard to fight the War on Terror with Traitors in the Media***

I remember a quote from Gen Tecumseh Sherman during the Civil War that “reporters are scum and traitors and should be shot on the spot.”

Besides, we’ve had this “Bush will attack Iran” for the past year now. Let Hersh smoke his weed and roll the dice, he might just get his...

Nothing will happen to them. It is an outrage but they always
get away with it. I think Hersh gets off on doing it.

One reason for this, according to two former intelligence officials directly involved in the Qaeda hunt, was that by 2006 the Iraq war had drained away most of the CIA officers with field experience in the Islamic world. "You had a very finite number" of experienced officers, said one former senior intelligence official. "Those people all went to Iraq. We were all hurting because of Iraq."

Really? CIA's pashto speakers are in Iraq? Really?

Or is CIA merely signallying that they don't have any pashto speakers, that they haven't developed the expertise they need to go after Bin Ladin even after 7 years of trying? They were using their arabists and now the arabists are deployed to an arab country?

Or is this just more of CIA trying to politicize their failures?

This is liberals trying to make the Bush Administration, the CIA and everyone involved look bad, so then they can promote Obama, who has a “fresh outlook”.

Wake up and smell the propaganda.

This article was published for one reason, the "pull quote" at the end of page 1:

"the US war in Iraq consistently diverted resources and attention away from the tribal areas".

It doesn't matter, that later...another US Official "vehemently denied this accusation".... They have their quote. Most likely, this was just whining from Richard Armitage.

When I read this article, the "consistent" theme I see is... Politically concerned officials running a war. They are more concerned about the press and world reaction than they are to accomplishing their mission.

Can you imagine the frustration of the Special Ops forces who, were on a plane ready to go capture Zawahiri... but, got stopped because Rumsfeld was fired?

God bless those men.... God keep them from turning bitter.

Coffee required- need to read the whole article. Wondering if it’s a set-up or the real deal. Of course- given the nature of politics inside the CIA and assorted intel shops it’s tough to tell shadows from objects..

I read the whole article and there's nothing in it to prove this so-called “highly classified Pentagon order” really exist. The article is written like a he said, she said with no substantiating facts around it just more should’ve, could've, would’ve. The last part of the version I read in the Dallas Morning News written by the Slimes reads that the “order” remains unsigned. If it is not signed then it's not an order. There could be other orders authorizing air-strikes in Pakistan because there has been air-strikes there and some within this year. If someone said there was an so-called order and the Slimes have the so-called order then someone needs to be in jail. The whole problem with the Slimes article is that anyone could have laid some plan out and it got turned down for some other plan but it doesn't mean it's an “order”.
Every time the media claims the Taliban or Al-Qaeda are getting the upper hand then they always mysteriously get their butts kicked. Right now Pakistan is pounding the Taliban.
The MSM can't claim that President Bush lost Iraq anymore so they're again moving on to President Bush can't beat the terrorist.

Another confidential source says the President doesn’t push hard enough. /s

That didn't sound right to me either. I mean, I'm no middle eastern linguist (my hubby was a Urdu linguist), but it sounds to me as if they don't have any native speaking agents. I know the Pushtu's in Waziristan don't speak the same language as Iraqis. I am afraid all our CIA agents are of the Plamesque variety. None of them seem capable of finding their backside with both hands and a flashlight.

These people are supposed to be bright and resourceful? I think we could find better agents if we recruited off street corners! These folks are also supposed to be adept at foreign languages. What do they speak? French? Good grief.

You would think our intelligence agencies (LOL!)would have gotten the message that we REALLY NEED for them to do their job! Not so, these fools still think they are playing Monopoly! People shouldn't wonder why 9/11 happened.

That didn't sound right to me either. I mean, I'm no middle eastern linguist (my hubby was a Urdu linguist), but it sounds to me as if they don't have any native speaking agents. I know the Pashtuns in Waziristan don't speak the same language as Iraqis. I am afraid all our CIA agents are of the Plamesque variety. None of them seem capable of finding their backside with both hands and a flashlight. The warring between field offices is inexcusable!

These people are supposed to be bright and resourceful? I think we could find more dedicated agents if we recruited off street corners! These folks are also supposed to be adept at foreign languages. What do they speak? French? Good grief.

You would think our intelligence agencies (LOL!) would have gotten the message that we REALLY NEED for them to do their jobs! Not so, these fools still think they are playing Monopoly! My heart bleeds for our Special Ops people who must depend on these big mouthed, inept, dummies to help them. I guess we really shouldn't wonder why 9/11 happened.

I totally agree, but it would sure help if the indiscreet Armitage, CIA folks, Democrat Senators, et al, would keep their big mouths CLOSED. The time to discuss tactics and missteps publicly is AFTER the war is over.

Thanks for the PING, Ernest.

It seems the NYSlimes is up to their old tricks. They evidently thought enough time had passed since their last traitorous article.
