Romney tops McCain veep list
Politico ^ | Monday June 30, 2008 | Mike Allen

Posted on 06/30/2008 9:01:16 AM PDT by AngelesCrestHighway

Surprising many Republican insiders, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is at the top of the vice presidential prospect list for John McCain. But lack of personal chemistry could derail the pick. “Romney as favorite” is the hot buzz in Republican circles, and top party advisers said the case is compelling. Campaign insiders say McCain plans to name his running mate very shortly after Barack Obama does, as part of what one campaign planner called a “bounce-mitigation strategy.”

I post this rule from time to time. The first rule of selecting a vice-presidential running mate is:

Never select someone who is smarter, more competent, more attractive, and generally just more appealing than you are.

This rule puts the RINO relic in a box, Romney would clearly outshine the train wreck that is the presumptive nominee.

Romney helps energize the Mormons in Colorado and Nevada. He puts Michigan very much in play. He is a solid conservative in general and also helps bolster McCain's economic credentials.

I don't know that he would be my personal number one pick, but he would be a solid choice.

Yes. He needs to pick a Conservative. More likely he'll pick someone like Graham or Romney instead.

Romney would bring parts of New England into play as well as the upper midwest, at a minimum, possibly even Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Dont worry about the South....the word from Georgia’s election officials in back rooms is that there has been no surge in black voter registration that is out of proportion with other groups. Its a myth, to use their words. Obama will not carry a single Southern state.

Yeah, but in this case, that rule might be a bit tough to follow. It means finding a candidate who is dumber and less competent than McCain, is less physically attractive (that’s a tall order!), and has less personality than Mr. Monotone-Drone-A-Thon.

I dunno...

Agree 100%. I really don’t expect McCain to live much longer. I will be surprised if he survives the rigors of campaigning. We really really need a VP choise who will be ready on day one to take over. Romney is the only person out there that (in my opinion) fits that description. I would be more likely to vote for McCain if I could be voting for Romney as well, because I would feel like I was voting for Romney for president.

I hope conservative and libertarians will be pleased with Romeny getting the nod for VP.

Not even close. First Romney isn't even close to being conservative - he believes in the power of big government to solve the country's problems, and is no different than any other statist. Second anyone who would associate with McCain automatically loses all credibility.

McCain's VP pick is going to make no difference to the majority of paleo-conservatives and libertarians. A great deal of us have woken up to the fact that there is little, if any, difference between the GOP and Dems.

Romney would make a fine VP choice for Obama.

Romney could continue the socialist work he started in MA, bankrtupting the entire nation, instead of just the state with socialized medicine.

Romney record on gay rights, support of gay marriage, general support of abortion, tax payer funded abortion $50 co-pay for abortions!), support of gun control, and general
nanny stateism is wonderful in the Democratic platform.

Romney’s father’s betrayal of this country in Vietnam and his fundraising for Planned Parenthood for years is great evidence that Romney is no Johnny-come-lately to liberalism -— he was raised as a big government liberal from birth, so he’s a natural among the elites in the Dim party.

Seeing the name JOHN THUNE in the top 3 excites me. He's been my first pick all along - but never saw his name brought up.

He's a great, solid, personable CONSERVATIVE - from a state full of ‘bitter, bible reading, gun clinging’ states. He's a solid family man with a personable family. He's ‘old stock’ America.

Go to his official site for his stances...and then go to his site with videos from his last campaign...
“ for a look at how personable he would be on the campaign trail.
Official site:
http://thune.senate.gov/public/

site for videos:
http://www.johnthune.com/index.php?content=comm04

scroll down and watch:
“Important We Work Together”
and
“Unique People “
and

“Grow the Economy”

His genuineness would resonate. And the camera loves him...much more personality than the obamination.

I can see him sliding comfortably into the presidency next election...

My list: first, John Thune
second, Mitt

Political spinners continue the mantra that McCain harbors animosity toward Romney. If we compare and contrast the ‘unity’ speech event of McCain-Romney last February, with what we saw on the stage with Obama-Clinton last week, we can see that there was more genuine feeling and respect between the two Republicans than ever between the two dems.

I think McCain’s face showed respect, and perhaps surprise, at how gracious and supportive Romney’s words were.

Political spinners don’t like reality to interfere with their preferred version of events. Hence, “lack of personal chemistry” becomes the mantra.

“— Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), who would delight conservatives and is at the top of the list of the party’s prospects for the presidential race in 2012 or 2016. He was described to Politico by a McCain confidant as a possible “compromise” if the senator can’t stomach picking Romney.”

Thune would be an attractive candidate, but IIRC he was a strong opponent of all the amnesty nonsense of McCain/Kennedy, and which Juan just declared to be his top priority for the first 100 days of a McCain administration.

How would the two square that difference, and if Thune did such a huge flip-flop, it might turn a large chunk of Republican voters against him.

This amnesty crap has damaged the party tremendously, but Juan is pigheadedly determined to cause even more damage to get his way. And if he succeeds, he will have given the Dems. millions of new voters for the foreseeable future.

Romney is a lifetime liberal who ran to the right in a transparent effort to be elected.

One example I love is his joining the NRA two weeks before running for office.

For a millionaire’s wife to give $150 to PP is truly a token gesture. Yeah, it was empty pandering and they shouldn’t have done it but oh well. 1994 donations that barely qualify for triple digits aren’t an issues to me 14 years later. Especially when the primary is over.

Great to hear such baloney from a freeper of less than one month.

Would you prefer people parrot the same old party line or would you like to engage in an intelligent discussion of the issues?

Both the GOP and Democratic party support big government statism. The GOP is no longer a party of limited government, and those within the GOP that support it (for example the Liberty Caucus group) are buried within the party ranks. It's shocking that self-described conservatives cannot see this after the past 8 years of run away spending and growing entitlements.

Romney ran as a liberal in 1994 and 2002 but he governed as a downright conservative (for Massachusetts) and ran as a conservative this last primary season. It’s good enough for me. Do I support MittCare? No. Has he been disingenuous and dishonest (like every politician)? Yes.

But I also recognize he’s an intelligent and successful businessman, sharp debater, youthful (for his age), and has traction in several swing states. I’d be a fool to pass all that up on a VP ticket.
