Breaking News from Louisiana:
BATON ROUGE -- Gov. Bobby Jindal announced today that he has vetoed the legislative pay raise.
After days of saying he would not reject the unpopular measure, Jindal said this morning that he had rejected the measure.
Lawmakers in the most recent session voted to raise their annual base salary from $16,800 to $37,500.
Jindal has been criticized for his inability to stop the raise before it was passed and his refusal since then to veto the pay raise bill. He pledged during his gubernatorial campaign last year to prohibit an immediate legislative pay raise. The governor had until July 8 to veto the bill or it would have become law.
The governor and five lawmakers already have been targeted with recall petitions, a clear sign of voters' unhappiness.

Sorry for the lack of details, but these stories are breaking. I will link more articles about these two stories when they become available.
I think he did the right thing. Too much politicking and waffling around before-hand, though.
Maybe this experience will stiffen his spine for the next time he needs to show true leadership.
Will his veto be overridden?
Mr. Jindal possibly doing a little politicking for the VP?
I’m not nearly local to LA, but it sounds like he’s belatedly done the right thing, moving from something that could have choked off a promising career to just an unfortunate muddle that we can hope will be a come-to-fiscal-jesus moment to refocuse his career.
He’s new to the job, and let’s face it: He had no working example from which to work.
ROFL
LOL!!
Better late than never. He was actually pretty apologetic to the public in his press conference...he said he had made mistakes in trusting the legislature to do the right thing and pretty much acknowledged that he had waited longer than he should have, but that it needed to be done. Likewise, during the delay while he made up his mind, a lot of legislators showed their true colors in the local media, and may turn out to be a good thing.
This is a good sign, and Jindal showed that he's going to stand with the *little people*.
Will his veto be overridden?
Isn’t the special session over?
Ping list time...
[laughing hysterically]...awesome...
I like Jindal, but it is way too early for him to be VP, he needs to serve out his term as governor, and he certainly should have a high profile at this year’s GOP Convention (much like Obama did in the 2004 Rat Convention), to set him up for 2012.
Praise Jesus. Gov. Jindal has redeemed himself.
Yes, I find all the Jindal for Veep talk hard to understand. The guy may have promise, but he’s only 37 and in his first year as governor. Let him wrestle with the legislature and clean up the mess in Louisiana before he even considers VP or President.
Agree 100%. He's barely older than Obama.
Scratch that last comment. He is much younger than Obama, actually.
Actually, Obama is almost 10 years older than Jindal.
Not sure how LA is set up for that process. But if the LA legislator believes in political suicide, then they will try.
It took a while, but Jindel finally did the right thing.
He did the right thing — this was a promise he had made publicly to the people who elected him — but he took a long time to arrive at the decision. This may turn into an instance where doing the right thing (but at the wrong time) can still come back to bite you. Hope it doesn’t, as I really like this guy and see an important future for him.
I agree. It’s Romney’s turn for VP this time.
The regular session ended last week.
of US now,,,;0)
I’m not crazy about Romney, but at least I’d take him over Huckster.
I’m wondering this. Did he wait until the special session was over to veto it?
Ohhh yeah!
Mccain better think long and hard about his VP pick.
Because with that one pick he could end up alienating a lot of voters.
Romney is the best choice. Seeing as how he was the runner up. And got more votes than anyone.......
Did I mention Romney could get Michigan. And with Georgia as a possible swing state and Bob Barr entering the picture..
We need to pick off Michigan. And Romney’s the one to do it.

Never mind my last. It was answered as I typed.
I can’t rule Jindal out “this time,” but I certainly prefer him to wait 4-8 years to see what he can do in La. (Should McCain win and serve only one term, then perhaps Jindal could be the VP nom for whomever NEXT gets the GOP presidential nomination, in 2012.)

Governor Jindal Vetoes Legislative Pay Raise Bill
STATEMENT AS ISSUED BY JINDAL’S OFFICE:
11:57:41 AM
Monday, June 30, 2008
BATON ROUGE At a press conference announcing his line item vetoes in the supplemental spending bill today, Governor Bobby Jindal announced that he has vetoed the legislative pay raise bill to more than double legislators pay, SB 672.
I have opposed this pay raise at every turn and from the very beginning. A doubling of legislative pay is clearly excessive and it takes effect prior to the next election, which I believe is bad policy, Governor Jindal said. This bill would also have set up a system to give legislators automatic pay raises in the future without additional legislative votes - which is a lack of accountability that we cannot accept.
The Governor had previously said he would not veto the pay raise to allow the legislature to conduct its own internal affairs. I clearly made a mistake by telling the legislature that I would allow them to handle their own affairs, Jindal said. As with all mistakes, you can either correct them or compound them - I am choosing to correct my mistake now.
I have said that I was not going to stop legislators from more than doubling their own pay by vetoing this because I did not want to give them any excuse to slow down the momentum of our reform movement here in Louisiana. It turns out this is an unsustainable position. I have come to realize that the reforms I have been fighting for are simply incompatible with this legislative pay raise.
I was trying to preserve our reform agenda and our momentum by tolerating this legislative pay raise that I knew was completely excessive. But the two cannot coexist.
The bottom line is that allowing this excessive legislative pay raise to become law would so significantly undercut our reform agenda, and so significantly diminish the peoples confidence in their own government, that I cannot let it become law. So, I have vetoed the bill.
The Governor continued to say that, The sideshow over massive legislative pay raises has already taken up far too much time. Its time to get back to doing the peoples business. There is a tremendous amount of work to be done in our state there are roads to build, jobs to create, business to open, and kids to educate.
The Governor also called for legislators to direct any anger over the veto of the pay raise to him, and not the people of Louisiana by impeding future important reforms for the state. Jindal said, I know that some of the legislators are going to be upset that I broke my word to them to stay out of their business. But I am asking them to take out their anger on me not on the people of Louisiana.
The Governor concluded his remarks by calling on the public to continue their close involvement in government and the political process. The Governor said, to all the citizens of Louisiana who have become so vocal on this issue and so involved in the process - stay involved. There is a lot more to do. Dont tune out or stop paying attention to the political process now. This government belongs to you; it is your business. Im going to need your help.

That’s it Mr. Jindal, go over the heads of the pols directly to the people.
Yea ya’ right!!!Thank you Bobby!!

That is a very good statement.
True.
I still hold out hope that he will learn from this experience and stick to his principles the next time he is faced with a similar decision.
I absolutely refuse to be faulted for expecting politicians to uphold their campaign promises. If more of you spineless whiners - and you all know who you are - would DEMAND your elected politicians behave, they would do so. Whenever citizens stand around and say “Oh, well (even though he/she lied) there’s nothing we can do about it and we must support the ‘home team’ regardless” - then you wind up with weasels in office every time.

I think he has great promise as gov of LA, and I hope he won’t be thrown away in a stupid VP bid under McQueeg.
I agree.
That would be a waste of his considerable talents and potential.

Maybe he finally got it through his noggin that 54% of the
Voters have HIS back as long as he has OURS !
The blogs are on fire with this,,,
In other news : TUCKER’S HEAD JUST Ka’SPLODED!...LOL;0)
I am pretty sure that this is not how Bobby planned this from the beginning, BUT....
By not acting quickly he has allowed the attention to this to build to an absolute frenzy, focusing on the fist-pumping legislators and their greed and disregard for the will of the people who elected them.
He didn’t react quickly and so allowed the anger and disappointment to grow even bigger, even though alot of it was focused on him. Now he has done the right thing, fulfilled his campaign promise to us, and shifted all of that animosity squarely to where it belongs... the legislators. Everybody’s going to be watching now and attribute any future obstruction on their part to sour grapes.
Like I said, I don’t think this was his original plan, and he had me worried for a while, but I think I am going to believe that Bobby is as smart as I thought he was in the first place. I think he played this perfectly (in hindsight of course).
O2
They’re gonna be pissed.

BUMP DAT!!!
OUTSTANDING JOB my FRiend!...
You may now Walk Like An Egyptian...;0)
If they had any intellectual honesty (and were not mindless cheerleaderssheep with a fixation on a single letter of the alphabet), they would be denouncing Jindal as a promoter of graft and other corruption. LOL!
Way to go Bobby!
