INDEPENDENCE, Missouri (Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama on Monday rejected questions about his patriotism even as he drew fire for a supporter's attack on Republican rival John McCain's military record.
Obama kicked off the week leading up to the July 4 Independence Day celebration with a broad-ranging speech extolling American virtues. He said questions about patriotism were a poisonous remnant of the 1960s culture wars.
In a clear sign the issue is a worry for the campaign, Obama said he would not sit back and watch his love of country questioned by political rivals.
"I will never question the patriotism of others in this campaign. And I will not stand idly by when I hear others question mine," he said in a speech at the Harry Truman presidential library in Missouri

He has no defense against an accusation of not being patriotic/loving America - so his response is to tell people to shut up and stop asking. This from the crowd that are supposed to be so much more intelligent an nuanced than all of us “hicks” in the Republican party. For someone whose appeal is supposed to be his niceness, Obama spends a lot of time smearing other people. On Sunday he sends his hit-man Wesley Clark to slime McCain, and today piously pretends to be above all that.

Obama can reject questions about his patriotism all he wants. In the end its not his thoughts on his patriotism or lack of it that matters but our thoughts on the subject.
He can make political speeches on patriotism now that he is a candidate for the Presidency. But I am more interested in his actions as a Senator and a citizen for the past 20 years then what some speech writer tapped out for him this week.
From everything I have seen and been able to locate on record is that Obama has little about him that is patriotic.
His agenda is fore most for himself and his ideaology and not “for the Country”.
Patriotism is very much like faith. You either walk the walk or you are all just about talk. Obama is a talker..........
I know it is little black boy. Now here’s a quarter so you can go call someone who cares.
I expect that B.O. will be alternating between "How dare you criticize my patriotism!" and "How dare you make a racist attack!"
For example:
1. "B.O. is a liberal." - "How dare you criticize my patriotism!"
2. "B.O. has no experience." - "How dare you make a racist attack!"

This is all a strategy to use the Fourth of July holiday as a photo op for the Obama campaign.
