Republicans on Wednesday assailed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's request for access to an Air Force transport plane as an extravagance, though former Speaker Dennis Hastert flew in a military jet as well.
Republicans are taking issue with the size of the plane Pelosi has requested. Pelosi had asked for access to a C-32 plane, a military version of the Boeing 757-200.
A Defense Department spokesman said Wednesday that the Pentagon informed Pelosi's staff that she would be provided with a plane but that its size would be based on availability.
After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Pentagon agreed to provide the House speaker, who is second in the line of presidential succession, with a military plane for added security during trips back home.
Hastert, an Illinois Republican, flew in a small commuter-sized jet. Pelosi and her aides say that because her congressional district is in California, her security would require a larger plane that can fly coast to coast without refueling.
"It's not a question of size, it's a question of distance," Pelosi said Wednesday. "We want an aircraft that can reach California."
Navy Cmdr. Jefrey Gordon, a Pentagon spokesman, said Wednesday that Pelosi would be offered "shuttle service for no more than 10 passengers between Washington and San Francisco only based on aircraft availability."
"This does not guarantee nonstop transport," Gordon said.
Rep. Adam Putnam of Florida, the No. 3 Republican leader, said he supported the tradition of House speakers having access to secure airplanes with secure communications in the post-9/11 era, because of their spot in the presidential line of succession.
But he called Pelosi's desire for a large transport "an extravagance of power that the taxpayers won't swallow."...

I think it’s time for a March on Congress - until and unless they get out of the way and allow Americans to drill for American OIL asap - We should shut Washington DC down.

There ought to be enough people up in arms about this issue to make it a huge “movement”....we need courageous leaders and one or two billionaires or a few millionaires...or tens of thousands in the former “middle” class of Americans who work hard to provide homes and food and provisions for themselves and their families...who would contribute.

If some 527s or PACs don’t completely assail the democratic leadership this year on energy, defense, and out of control government, I will be very disappointed. They tore down the GOP in ‘06, it is time to return the favor.

I envision a Congress paid minimum wage for the honor to serve..
Provide them sleeping facilities, free bus transportation to and from Congress and meal vouchers in addition to security.
No longer will they be treated as celebrities.
No limos, no closed door meetings outside of national security issues, no insiders or lobbyist and all television interviews will be conducted in the same room at Congress. No more endless interviews on the major networks. They're offices can simply put out daily press memos.
That's all we need from them. Not limousines, nightly trips to CNN, Larry King, makeup, and all this slanted, orchestrated media horsesh*t.
All will be subjected to random financial background investigations and drug tests. They will get no more perks, benefits or pensions exceeding those of the average American making the same income.
This goes for all levels of public government service, including the local level, county and state level. Don't like it? Don't apply for the job or run for election.
Lets focus the eyes of the law and scrutiny on them, instead of Americans.
We need kill the ever growing government machine at all levels except the military, and put it back on track with our priorities being border security and our military, followed by a national drive for energy independence.
We need to dramatically reduce and downsize government at ALL levels and America really needs to do this quickly.

I’ve seen congress members on commercial flights from LAX to DC. Why does she or any other member need a special jet. This is a made up perk that has no particular justification and another example of how they are “too good” for us. We need to term limit them out and give them social security for retirement, and medicare for medical.
