'Cool Fuel': Brew It Yourself Teen's Basement Biodiesel Lab Not So Unusual
The Washington Post ^ | July 1, 2008 | Lori Aratani

Posted on 07/01/2008 7:40:43 AM PDT by Virginia Ridgerunner

Gabe Schwartzman, a tall, lanky high school senior from Montgomery County, can fill up the tank of his 1980 Volvo sedan for less than $20.

And he's happy to share his secret: "I take what would be thrown away and turn it into fuel."

Over the last several months, Gabe has been hunkered down in the basement of his parents' Garrett Park home, converting used fryer oil from a restaurant up the street into fuel for his car.

Brewing biodiesel, once a quaint hobby for green-minded citizens and budding chemists, is becoming more mainstream. The spike in gas prices is making fryer oil, the messy aftermath of super spuds and mozzarella sticks, a hot commodity. It has even spawned a crime wave. Law enforcement officials have reported a surge in fryer oil thefts. Officials suspect the culprits are finding a ready market for the waste oil.

Great idea that I've been exploring for myslef, but this kid is about to bring down the full force of both the EPA and the State of Maryland upon his head for openly bragging about his use of biodiesel since EPA does not yet consider home-brewed biodiesel as an acceptable fuel and Maryland will want all of those back road-usage taxes that he has not paid.

He should have just kept his mouth shut. Now, he's going to be looking at thousands of $$$$$$$ in fines.

This is true...it is a fact in all states. Trick is not to let anyone know you are using biodiesel. By fuel with cash to set a precedence. Then make the switch.

He should have paid the tax, if he has not done so.

The smarter drug dealers buy a tax stamp to avoid a stiff penalty when they are eventually caught.

Ethanol is fine as long as your get a BATF permit (easy enough, believe it or not) and file quarterly usage returns with accompanying tax check with your state department of revenue. In fact, you can get a .53 cent per gallon of Ethanol produced as a federal tax credit, under current law.

During my regular commute over the past three weeks, I’ve seen a big jump in the number of old 1980s vintage diesel Mercedes and VW Rabbits on the highway, rust and all. I bet they either run on home-brewed biodiesel or have been converted to run on waste vegetable oil.

Yeah I am looking at an older 1982 300D right now as I toasted a set of injectors in my cummin dodge ! I have the bio diesel refiners from freedom fuel and make it for friends . As well I am in the process of stuffin / shoehorning an older 6BT cummins into my old FJ80 Landcruiser SUV ! Right now I commute with a buddy and his wife who I make the fuel for. Their car an older 1980 Mercedes they own.

I want too get back into my own WVO or home brew rig vs commutting with others as car pooling ties one down too strict hours and I don’t like such !

Well lets just hope there are enough fast food restaurants for all of us. It's going to take a lot of used fry oil to power a nation.
Otherwise french fries are the next thing to get hit by the speculators. Can you see it now? Heading through the drive through and fries reach $4.50 for small, $5.01 for regular, and $5.95 for premium...I mean large.

Of course the Dems are already against this, at their convention they aren't allowing ANY fried foods. Damn, they don't even want you to have the energy produced by their convention.

You can actually make build the processors yourself for about half the price of the one shown in this ad, using common plumbing parts, a plastic tank, and an old water heater.

So do these home biodiesel refineries have to meet EPA and OSHA standards? There’s a reason John D. Rockefeller was able to run the old mom and pop refineries out of buisiness in the 19th century. Refining is very capital intensive and has tremendous economies of scale.

The law is very murky on this issue, but for small-scale pruivate home production, I would say no. However, technically speaking, you would have to get permission from your local county or township government to build and operate your own ethanol still or biodiesel reactor.

I have added 10% fryer oil to my old 1976 truck and it smokes at first but ran normally after it warmed up. I plan to run it straight in my bulldozer. All I have to do is to heat it up so the lard does not plug the fuel filter. I could add 20% motor oil to it also. All I need to do is to let the ash settle out and filter it good. No need to go though all the mess and expense for old vehicles.

No that is a 4BT ......and if you go the 4BT you want one from a delivery vehicle that has all the alternator and other fittings vs just a engine used for pumping or off road forks etc ......

The 6BT is a really tight fit yet has been done by a few folks determined as well the frame of the 92 FJ80 is well capable of handling the weight. I have the body off my frame right now and am looking for two Volvo portal axles etc ........it will not be a quick project as I want everything too fit and function on and off road !

I have the primary 38 and aux 34 gallon fuel tank is for the FJ80 and am looking at starting with bio diesel and running WVO and then purge with bio diesel and park so I don;t Crisco up the lines etc .........

On going project .....weekend and dime at a time per se !....:o)

Stay safe !

Yes, they nailed me back in the seventies. The fine is $10,000...the same as the cost of the permit to operate a still. To be honest, I didn't have to pay the fine but I did have to dismantle the still and was told that if I get caught again I will share a cell with a drug lord.

I’d say, you better pay the tax man his cut per gallon you use.... fuel tax payments don’t generally have exemptions for fuel you make yourself. Gubment still wants their .40 a gallon.

Pretty stupid to be yapping about it over the ‘net. Our son, stationed in Ft. Benning, GA, has seen officers “dipping tanks” of obviously private diesel P/Us in order to determine what kind of diesel fuel is being used and bio-diesel? No sweat, easily proven. Besides a $1,000.00 fine, the violators are reported to IRS and State for various tax evasions.

Farm diesel is common in the South, the technology is not that new and the results can ruin you. Probable Cause for pulling one over? Doesn’t seem to matter anymore does it? So what’s the answer? We’ve given the country away anyway, PAY THE PRICE—or—DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW, PAY LESS!! There ya go...

The law changed after 1980. The federal government, rightly or wrongly, is actually encouraging people to home-brew ethanol. See here for precise details and permitting requirements.

Is it legal?

Why do these people keep acting as if this was something new. Lots of people have been using used fryer oil for fuel for years, even before the "Great Global Warming Swindle" hit us. It is a good idea and has merit, however, there is only so much fryer oil out there to be used by motorists. Once people start jumping on the band wagon restraunts will probably start charging for it.

I mean what would you do. You have a by product that you can't get rid of and have to pay someone to haul off for you and suddenly people start mobbing your establishment looking for used fryer oil, now you don't have a waste product any longer you have a viable fuel source. It will no longer be free for the asking, at least not at a place I owned if the demand was big enough.

That is called free enterprise, supply and demand and the law will kick in when the demand gets big enough which will be soon at the rate they are printing stories about it these days.
