Obama works to mobilize 'Christian left'

CNN) -- Democrats have usually conceded the evangelical vote during presidential elections, but Sen. Barack Obama is trying to change that by mobilizing what some call the "Christian left."

As part of his outreach to evangelical voters, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Tuesday will tour the Eastside Community Ministry in Zanesville, Ohio, and give an address on how he plans to build what he calls a "real" partnership between faith-based organizations and the White House if he becomes president.

Obama's outreach to evangelical voters has also included private summits with pastors, an effort to reach out to young evangelicals and a fundraiser with the Matthew 25 political action committee, which describes itself as a group of moderate evangelicals, Catholics and Protestants committed to electing the Illinois Democrat president.

Matthew 25's name is inspired by a biblical passage, in the 25th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, in which Jesus says, "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink." The name is meant to signal the group's focus on social justice concerns about hot-button cultural issues.

Brian McLaren, a former pastor who spent 24 years in the pulpit and is now an informal adviser to the Obama campaign, believes a significant portion of evangelical voters are ready to break from their traditional home in the the Republican Party and take a new leap of faith with Obama.

Matthew25 also ignores the first half of the chapter. I guess it smacks too much of capitalism. If you take the way they read the second half as an example, they would be mortified at the bridesmaids in the first section or the profit-making in the second.

From the sounds of it, “Bishop” Benke will be first in line (as long as a papist will walk him up to the Obamassiah...)

Oh, there are numerous studies and writings on the evidence that socialism is totally against God’s will.

Biblical concepts:
Two of the ten Commandments (direct from God) state that you shouldn’t steal or want to have (or control) others’ property.

The sin nature of all humans precludes giving them too much power over others - and that’s what socialism is, centralized power over others.

If a man WILL NOT (not “cannot”) work, he shouldn’t be allowed to eat.

Teach a man to fish, etc.

Everyone should learn a skill so that he can provide for himself, his family, and have something to give the needy.

Charity should be voluntary and joyful, not coerced.

A man who doesn’t provide for his family has denied the faith and is not a Christian.

There are more - I need to compile these with references.

Here’s my favorite poke in the eye to the left:
Ecc 10:2
A wise man’s heart directs him toward the right, but the foolish man’s heart directs him toward the left.

I just think we need to be carefull as Christians about mixing politics in this way and making divisive statements about people who are, right or wrong, our brothers in Christ.

I used to bring up politics in a bible study I attend, assumeing everyone was fairly like minded and I learned indirectly that I was incorrect in that assumption and I regreted if I made someone feel uncomfortable because we weren’t there to perfect our politics.

I guess "young evangelicals" would be some of those people born because their parents were "punished with a child," in Obamunist newspeak.

I agree that mixing politics and faith is a bad idea. However, Paul wrote that if you see a brother falling you should gently restore him. I merely try to point out errors in judgment when I see them.

Not only voluntary,

INDIVIDUAL, PERSONAL, and JOYFUL giving.

Supporting the coercive/forced confiscation of others’ property to feed the poor doesn’t count at all.

Obama's Church: Gospel of Hate
Kathy Shaidle, FrontPageMag.com
Monday, April 07, 2008

In March of 2007, FOX News host Sean Hannity had engaged Obama’s pastor in a heated interview about his Church’s teachings. For many viewers, the ensuing shouting match was their first exposure to "Black Liberation Theology"...

Like the pro-communist Liberation Theology that swept Central America in the 1980s and was repeatedly condemned by Pope John Paul II, Black Liberation Theology combines warmed-over 1960s vintage Marxism with carefully distorted biblical passages. However, in contrast to traditional Marxism, it emphasizes race rather than class. The Christian notion of "salvation" in the afterlife is superseded by "liberation" on earth, courtesy of the establishment of a socialist utopia.

Catholics for Marx
By Fr. Robert Sirico
FrontPageMagazine.com | Thursday, June 03, 2004

In the days when the Superpowers were locked in a Cold War, Latin America seethed with revolution, and millions lived behind an iron curtain, a group of theologians concocted a novel idea within the history of Christianity. They proposed to combine the teachings of Jesus with the teachings of Marx as a way of justifying violent revolution to overthrow the economics of capitalism.

The Gospels were re-rendered not as doctrine impacting on the human soul but rather as windows into the historical dialectic of class struggle. These "liberation theologians" saw every biblical criticism of the rich as a mandate to expropriate the expropriating owners of capital, and every expression of compassion for the poor as a call for an uprising by the proletarian class of peasants and workers.

From Jeff Head's website...
One notable quote from [James] Cone describing his Black Liberation Theology is as follows:

"Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community ... Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love." - "Divine Racism: The Unacknowledged Threshold Issue for Black Theology", in African-American Religious Thought: An Anthology, by William R Jones, ed Cornel West and Eddie Glaube (Westminster John Knox Press).

From the New York Times, April 28, 2008
Reverend Wright at the National Press Club
"In the late 1960s, when Dr. James Cone's powerful books burst onto the scene, the term 'black liberation theology' began to be used. I do not in any way disagree with Dr. Cone, nor do I in any way diminish the inimitable and incomparable contributions that he has made and that he continues to make to the field of theology. Jim, incidentally, is a personal friend of mine."

Being a "true Christian" is having faith in Christ, not being free from sin. None of us are.

Oh, contraire (if you have faith in Jesus Christ as the risen Lord and Savior)...

Romans 6

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

5If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. 6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. 18You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

19I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. 20When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[b] Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gee, the “Emergent Church” lines up with Obama. What a shock. *sarcasm*

No surprise McLaren is involved with this. His buddy Shane “capitalism creates poverty” Claiborne and his happy heretics are currently doing a bus tour for their book Jesus For President... which is really an Obama for President traveling rally, as, don’t you know, Republicans aren’t REALLY for Jesus. Don’t mention any sin other than “social justice” sins though. That’s judgmental to the Emergents, although voting for Republicans is one of the few things they recognize as sin.

Matthew 25's name is inspired by a biblical passage, in the 25th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, in which Jesus says, "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink."

"I was pregnant and you ripped the child from my womb." Somehow I don't recall reading that in the Scriptures.

“‘Moderate Christians’”

Claiborne’s group proudly call themselves “radicals”. “Marxist Christians” is a pretty fair description of a lot of these people. At their rallies, they do powerpoint shows mocking American and the flag, hinting that we’re a Rome against Christ. Patriotism is taught to be un-Christian by these people.

“Christian Communism is a form of religious communism centered around Christianity.”

Communism only works if it is voluntary. Even then, there are individuals that are ‘more equal’ than other.

A good example of it this is when you go camping with friends. Your friends forgot some supplies so you (voluntarily) offer some of your supplies.

In fact, this is what Jesus teaches. Individuals helping individuals. The true Christian government is a monarchy; with God the Father/Jesus/Spirit as the King.
