While on the flight deck of the Forestall (sp?). I believe that there was a short circuit in the fire control of another plane on the flight deck, and McCain's A4 was hit by what was I believe a Zuni rocket. His plane was fully fueled and armed, and he was waiting to take off. McCain got out of his plane and had to crawl through fire to get to safety.

McCain was absolutely blameless, and anyone who says anything different is beneath contempt. A lot of good men died that day.

I don’t think anyone will try to attack McCain with this. The Forrestal Fire is on video. You can see with your own eyes exactly what happened and the sequence of events clearly exonerate McCain. The cause of the USS Forrestal fire had nothing to do with John McCain. A Zuni rocket launched accidentally from an F-4 (Phantom), NOT an A-4, and it came from the opposite side of the flight deck compared to where McCain was sitting in his A-4 readying for take-off. McCain’s A-4 was not the plane involved either in launching the Zuni rocket or getting hit by the Zuni rocket, but he was very close to the conflagration and easily could have lost his life. Many did perish in the ensuing fires, but for anyone to assert that John McCain bore any responsibility is completely contrary to the findings of extensive investigations and witness reports. These scumbags will not stop smearing anyone who doesn’t share their far-left derangement.

Oh, yeah. Everybody going through Damage Control school in the 70's got chapter and verse on the Forrestal. It was one of those cascades of events that you couldn't make worse if you tried.

McCain is lucky to be alive. The guy next to him made it to the flight deck and was killed when the first bomb cooked off. A Chief had the brass ones to try cooling it with a hand-held fire extinguisher and paid for it with his life. 134 guys lost that day.

His plane fired the rocket. This is a common danger in naval aviation, even today. There is so much high-power radar around, it can jump the ignition gap on a rocket motor, and start the motor.

There are electrical shunt clips that "safe" the motor, but they have to be removed before flight. Best practice is to then have the aircraft pointing to the side of the carrier, aimed at empty ocean. But once they start lining up for launching, your have some twitchy electrical circuits waiting for a stray electrical pulse, rather than the pilot pushing a button.

The rocket, a 2.75 FFAR, came from McCain's A-4, but it was shown to have been a freak accident, and he had nothing to do with it. It's just a lousy smear by swine who know better, but figure they can convince enough dummies to keep the libel circulating.

Oh, and accidental rocket firings still happen today, even after 40 years of technological improvements.
