Late-Period Limbaugh (Long read)
NYT ^ | July 6, 2008 | ZEV CHAFETS

Posted on 07/02/2008 8:33:05 AM PDT by vietvet67

At one time, Limbaugh did his program from a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper he dubbed, with tongue-in-cheek grandiosity, the Excellence in Broadcasting Building. These days, he mostly broadcasts out of a studio in Palm Beach, Fla., which he calls the Southern Command, and describes on the air as a “heavily fortified bunker.”

In fact, Limbaugh’s show emanates from a nondescript office building on a boulevard lined with tall palms. There isn’t even a security guard in the lobby. The elevator opens directly onto a pristine anteroom furnished in corporate glass and leather. An American flag stands in the corner. Only a small, framed picture of Limbaugh, bearing the caption “America’s Anchorman,” reveals that this is the headquarters of one of the country’s most admired and reviled figures.

The anteroom was empty when I stepped off the elevator one afternoon in mid-February. Limbaugh receives very few visitors at work, and no journalists from the hated “mainstream media.” When I was buzzed into the control room, I was met by Bo Snerdly — a very large man in a Huey Newton beret — who glared at me. “Are you the guy who’s here to do the hit job on us?” he demanded in a deep voice.

“Absolutely,” I said.

Snerdly, whose real name is James Golden, held my eyes for a long moment before bursting into emphatic laughter.

“It’s just that we aren’t used to seeing reporters here,” said a woman named Dawn. She is a stenographer whom Limbaugh hired in 2001, after he went deaf. These days he has a cochlear implant that enables him to hear callers, but Dawn sends him real-time transcripts of on-air conversations, just in case.

Don’t you love that they made sure to note there are no security guards.... all they need do now is send Hinckley a letter saying that Rush is dating Jodie Foster.

The NYT screws up the first sentence.

Rush did not call his New York building, the 'Excellence in Broadcasting' building, he called it the 'EIB' building.

There is a difference, which is lost on the nations largest gay-daily paper.

Pretty good article, except that he didn’t mention the security door code (4491).

There is nothing too low or too sneaky for the NYT to do to give aid and comfort to America’s enemies.

Because he did not see a security guard does not mean there wasn’t one. I suspect Rush has pretty good situational awareness.

“Snerdly introduced himself as an “African-American-in-good-standing-and-certified-black-enough-to-criticize-Obama guy,” and declared that he was speaking, “on behalf of our E.I.B. brothers and sisters in the hood.” The bit was typical Limbaugh — confrontational, deliberately insensitive and funny. It was also a declaration of independence. Whatever special courtesies John McCain might plan to extend to Barack Obama, Limbaugh is going to conduct his air war, as he always has, by his own rules of engagement.”

Too true. When is McLame going to get in the game?

I believe he did at first, but the town didn't allow it and he had to relocate to a commercial area? I read something about it ....

That you could see.

Mr. Snerdly and Dawn are however armed to the teeth. You'd be surprised what sort of weaponry a large man can secrete about his person. And a woman..well.. lots of good places to conceal stuff there as well.

I read the article this morning and the bit about Rush’s broadcasting studio being open and unguarded really jumped out at me, too. My first thought was cynical - here was an attempt by the reporter to make it clear to any crazy that Rush was an easy target.

However, I would imagine that Rush’s hate mail and death threats would be legion, and that he’s got the best protection money can buy.

Otherwise, not a bad read. Not a lot of new information, either. LOL

At dinner the night before, Bill O’Reilly’s name came up, and Limbaugh expressed his opinion of the Fox cable king. He hadn’t been sure at the time that he wanted it on the record. But on second thought, “somebody’s got to say it,” he told me. “The man is Ted Baxter.”

That article was as fair a deal as Rush could ever hope for from fishwrap like the New York Slimes. The article was a long read but the quote about O'Reilly found on the last page was PRICELESS.

Reasonably fair article. Much more balanced than I would expect from the NY Slimes. It might have something to do with it being published in the magazine. Still has to give its digs in to Rush. Go the article online and look at the interesting pictures.

Rush is the best. He needs to expand his Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies so that Republicans can take notes.

If you click on the link to the whole, fairly lengthy article, I'm sure you'll enjoy it immensely. I did.

Here's a quote that really tickled me: "At dinner the night before, Bill O’Reilly’s name came up, and Limbaugh expressed his opinion of the Fox cable king. He hadn’t been sure at the time that he wanted it on the record. But on second thought, “somebody’s got to say it,” he told me. “The man is Ted Baxter.”

Rush tells it like it is, and clearly doesn't spend much time considering consequences. LOL.

Overall, I would think it would arouse the curiosity of some (here to for nonlisteners) to tune him in.

Sean Hannity is proof that all you need is a good smile and consistent delivery and you will go far with persistence. Sean doesn’t pretend to be the sharpest knife in the draw, but he works twice as hard as others with more talent, and it pays off for him. Never liked his show, but the ladies seem to think otherwise.
