The State Duma has called on Lithuania to end what it calls anti-Russian activity. It came after the U.S. suggested the former Soviet republic could become a base for its planned anti-missile shield in Europe and also followed the adoption of a ban on the public display of all Soviet symbols - a move Russia describes as rewriting history.
From Thursday, relics of the Soviet Union such as the hammer and sickle flag, the Soviet army uniform or the USSR's national anthem are forbidden in public.
Lithuania says the new law gives them a chance to move on from what they view as years of Soviet occupation, to leave this history behind. For Russia, the Soviet ban in Lithuania is an insult to its history.
Silence descended in the State Duma as a statement was adopted calling for Lithuania to put an end to what it referred to as anti-Russian actions.
If they want to have good cooperation, good future, theyd better change their behaviour. This is the only way to have friends in Europe, said State Duma Deputy Andrey Klimov.
But Lithuania says it has a right to let go.
Vilja Abramikiene, a member of the Lithuanian parliament, said it was a time of two terrible and inhuman regimes. We dont need any propaganda for either of them.
But it is not just a question of symbols.
The Duma statement railed against U.S. suggestions Lithuania could become an alternative site for its anti-missile bases in Europe, saying this could force Russia to build up troops in Kaliningrad.
But Lithuania has its own gripes the Druzhba oil pipeline from Russia closed in 2006 for repairs and has yet to re-open. And in April Lithuania blocked Russias renewed talks with the EU due to concerns over energy security.
time to blockade the K. Oblast.

“And in April Lithuania blocked Russias renewed talks with the EU due to concerns over energy security.”
Is this an accurate statement? Sounds unlikely, or very poorly written.
Let’s see the Russian Duma pass legislation formally apologizing for years of occupation, terror, oppression (religious and secular) and tyrannical rule.
Lithuania does not need to kiss their big, still Commie-leaning @sses.
Lithuania's Motives In Blocking Russia Pact - May 15, 2008 - Last month, when Vilnius formally blocked an EU agreement to start strategic partnership talks with Russia, it cited as reasons a Russian freeze on oil deliveries to its Mazheikiu refinery; disappearances in Russia of a number of its businessmen; atrocities carried out by the Soviet Army in 1991, which Russia refuses to acknowledge; and Moscow's recent aggressive moves in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia.
Banning the Hammer and Sickle, Stalins uniforms, the Communist Anthem?
Don’t they appreciate that these are the symbols of their protectors and should be honored for perpetuity?
Where would they all be today without their benificent Mother, Russia?
Probably stuck in rush hour traffic on their Autobahns, thats where.
The Baltic states should also find a way to evict the large numbers of ethnic Russians Stalin planted in their countries to replace ethnic Balts exiled to remote places like Siberia.
And murder.
Why, what an ungrateful little former Soviet client state.
And just why are Russian troops still in Kalinningrad?
BTTT
Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan are fast becoming the USSR reincarnate.
Kalingrad should be given to Poland as reparations for the way the Soviets treated them, and a small part of Kalangrad should be given to Lithuania.
And the Russians never understand why their neighbors can’t stand them.......
And aren’t our resident Russian apologists always insisting that Russia had NOTHING to do with the Soviet Union? It was ALL a plot against the poor oppressed Russians...
