Woman arrested after baby is cut out of victim's womb

KENNEWICK — A 23-year-old Kennewick woman is accused of stabbing to death a pregnant Pasco woman and then cutting her unborn child out of her womb and trying to pass the baby off as her own.

Blue mechanic's gloves soaked in blood, a box cutter, bloody paper towels, a baby bottle and a mucus bulb are among items suspected of being used to kill Araceli Camacho Gomez and steal her nearly full-term baby.

Details of the slaying were revealed Monday afternoon when Phiengchai Sisouvanh Synhavong made a preliminary appearance in Benton County Superior Court. She was ordered held without bail in the Benton County Jail on suspicion of aggravated first-degree murder.

Camacho Gomez was found dead in Columbia Park about 1 a.m. Saturday with her hands and feet bound by yarn and "massive trauma to her stomach area," court documents said. The 27-year-old, who was about 8 ½ months pregnant, was stabbed multiple times in the chest.

The infant boy was recovered about two hours earlier and is on life support in critical condition at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, said Kennewick Police Chief Ken Hohenberg.

Sisouvanh Synhavong, who was arrested late Friday, is expected to be arraigned this morning. If convicted she faces life in prison without parole, or prosecutors could seek the death penalty.

Defense attorney Christopher Swaby was appointed by Judge Robert Swisher to represent Sisouvanh Synhavong on an interim basis until an attorney approved to handle death-penalty cases can be found.

Prosecutor Andy Miller has 30 days to decide if he'll seek the death penalty.

Few details about Friday's slaying have been released by officials since Camacho Gomez's body was found...

Sisouvanh Synhavong

Ugh.

Sisouvanh Synhavong might be a Laotian citizen, Miller said, adding that the Laos consulate has been notified.

Can't help but think if only our government could spell "d-e-p-o-r-t-a-t-i-o-n" would that pregnant mother still be alive?

She self-aborted. So I'd like to ask the compassionate liberals: what is this woman's crime? She was just following your gospel.

Was Araceli Camacho Gomez subject to deportation?

Are you trolling for a response or do you really not get it?

“Phiengchai Sisouvanh Synhavong”
That’s a mouthful! And it looks as if she’s had way to many mouthfuls!
Ghastly crime. We had a similar case in Ohio a few years ago.

Do you understand sarcasm directed at liberals? They're ones who believe abortion on demand is holy grail. So why was she arrested and charged? This is what they live for, folks. So why don't they celebrate it?

When I was pregnant with our little miracle and getting close to being done, my husband was very, very paranoid about something like this happening. Me...not so much.
This is so sad, I can only imagine what that mother went through. I am so thankful that the child is alive, and I'm sure the mom would be, too.

30 seconds ought to do it.

Um...she murdered a woman not an unborn child. I see your point but you’re using the wrong story to illustrate it.

Some of the members of her church saw her beforehand and thought she seemed possessed.

I don’t doubt it at all.

Thanks for my daily reaffirmation of the beauty of mankind.

For every act such as this, there are millions and more that go unnoticed just because they're commonplace. It's the exceptions that make the news.

(Which is not to say I believe in the inherent goodness of mankind, just that most can be brought up to be good.)

And I have not even STARTED commenting on her looks.

"Looks" won't matter with a life sentence. Or death, for that matter. But this looks a lot like an "insanity" plea, for all the calculation that went into it.

But one would like to know: "Why?"

On Friday a Hindu member of our parish will become an American citizen. I plan on being on hand to observe and celebrate with her -- our gain and India's loss.

They also said Synhavong had spoken to her spiritual leader shortly before the alleged murder. She was acting strangely in such a way that made them suspect she may be possessed, they said

That's a bold statement for any religous leader to state, so I'll accept it as genuine. They must be traumatized as would anyone who found there was a demon in their midst. Prayers for that congregation, along with the child, his mother's soul, and his family.
