Mugabe Tells African Peers To Examine Own Records
Washington Post ^ | July 2, 2008 | Ellen Knickmeyer

A defiant President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe on Tuesday fended off an effort by African leaders to sanction him for his country's recent election violence, telling them that their claims to power were no more legitimate than his.

President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal said Mugabe chastised another head of state during a closed-door session Tuesday night for having "worse elections than I did."

A two-day summit of the 53-nation African Union that was dominated by talk of Zimbabwe's political crisis ended with leaders issuing no public rebuke.

Instead, African leaders encouraged Mugabe to enter into dialogue and form a power-sharing government with Zimbabwe's opposition. After intense Western pressure to do more against Mugabe, the leaders failed to hold a planned news conference and left without speaking to reporters.

African leaders traditionally have avoided public criticism of one another's internal affairs, out of reluctance to see their own records on rights and governance scrutinized.

This was the African leaders' "moment of truth," ...

A lot of people did not dare speak out because they were afraid they would have Mr. Mugabe's harsh response."

"Mugabe let people know he is not the worst-elected head of state,"

Yep there’s something for Mugabe to talk about. Many African countries are in the toilet, and other leaders have been worse than him.

not really

No one has taken something so good and made it so horrible

Other states had far less to begin with.

Mugabe premised himself as a human rights activists which others did not.

Yes, but they've got to start somewhere. Colonialism is long over. The cold war, where either side would overlook various sins for expediency, is over.

Now we have the internet, instant communications, and a vast population that is used to seeing peaceful democratic principles, but only in other countries. Time's up, Africa.

How long can this guy hang on? They had 1,000,000 percent inflation last year and finally the German company that has been supplying him with blank anti counterfeit money has cut him off. When his loyal supports no longer get paid, even in super inflated currency his party will be over. Mussolini tried it and it didn't work for him either.

Robert Mugabe is obviously an uncle tom, because he is opposed to homosexuality, and everyone knows that only racist rednecks and their toadies are opposed to homosexuality. We need to send Jackson and Sharpton over there to see to it that the Black man’s natural sympathy for oppressed “gays” prevails in the Sacred Mother Land.
