You cannot raise live HIV in Human subjects beyond two weeks because the immune system kills the virus.
I think that HIV is not the cause of death, but is a simple, low grade viral infection that is passed along with multiple immune diseases.
By focusing on HIV we are targeting the wrong issue and that is why the most studied disease in mankinds history has been evading our cures.

HIV wasn’t believed to be the cause of death. AIDS was. HIV was believed to have caused AIDS.
Magic Johnson has had HIV for the better part of 20 years and he’s yet to contract AIDS or suffer any noticeable ill effects.
I was agreeing with part of your point about HIV (that it doesn’t kill) and making my own (that it probably doesn’t cause AIDS, either).
