No reparations. I am so damned sick of white guilt being shoved in our faces. I had family on both sides of the civil war. We bled at the ofice ... TWICE.

Even immigrants and people whose ancestral line contains no slaveholders should pay reparations...

Yeah, put a 50% tax on all the money illegal immigrants are sending to their home countries.

(Oh, crap, that will never work. Most of them aren't white and this is a soak whitey issue.)

Mrs. Submariner's Great-Great Uncle was with the Wisconsin Volunteers and left an arm at Vicksburg. Maybe it is time the descendants of the slaves started paying the descendants of those who fought to liberate them.

Let’s see, the British brought African slavery to the North American continent, so...thta’s the first place that reparations should begin.

No, the place to begin is with blacks. Everyone practiced slavery in older times. Slavery was simply an institution that was taken for granted as part of every society. Whites were the first to get rid of it, slowly, over a period of many centuries. Meanwhile, African blacks never even considered getting rid of it.

When the New World was being colonized, the idea of slavery, which had been dying in the white world, made an unfortunate comeback. The new lands seemed so vast that some felt slave labor was needed to develop such a huge land mass. But where could they get slaves? They had banned slavery in their own lands.

Africa turned out to be the place where slaves were a dime a dozen. Why? Because the Africans had never even considered getting rid of slavery. They practiced it with impunity, and it had never crossed their minds that there was anything wrong with it. So we bought slaves from there and brought them to America.

Eventually we realized our error and abolished slavery for good, but Africans would still be practicing slavery today if the European colonial powers hadn't stopped it. In fact, slavery is still practiced today, under the radar, in many African nations.

And, of course, black Americans today are net beneficiaries of slavery because they have the highest standard of living of any blacks on earth, thanks to the fact that they were brought here.

So just say no to reparations. Everyone on earth surely has both slaves and slave owners among their ancestors. It's ironic that the race that was the last to abolish slavery, and which would still be practicing it had others not forced them to abolish it, is the one demanding reparations for the practice.

An indentured servant is indentured as a payment for debt - the only way some people could pay their debts or raise money for other purposes was to indenture themselves.

Slavery is different from indenture. Indenture was a form of contract.

Since Obama won the Democratic nomination, I consider the ‘debt’ paid.

You stand in the midst of the greatest achievements of the greatest productive civilization and you wonder why it’s crumbling around you, while your damning its life-blood—money. You look upon money as the savages did before you, and you wonder why the jungle is creeping back to the edge of your cities. Throughout men’s history, money was always seized by looters of one brand or another, but whose method remained the same: to seize wealth by force and to keep the producers bound, demeaned, defamed, deprived of honor. That phrase about the evil of money, which you mouth with such righteous recklessness, comes from a time when wealth was produced by the labor of slaves—slaves who repeated the motions once discovered by somebody’s mind and left unimproved for centuries. So long as production was ruled by force, and wealth was obtained by conquest, there was little to conquer. Yet through all the centuries of stagnation and starvation, men exalted the looters, as aristocrats of the sword, as aristocrats of birth, as aristocrats of the bureau, and despised the producers, as slaves, as traders, as shopkeepers—as industrialists.

“To the glory of mankind, there was, for the first and only time in history, a COUNTRY OF MONEY—and I have no higher, more reverent tribute to pay to America, for this means: a country of reason, justice, freedom, production, achievement. For the first time, man’s mind and money were set free, and there were no fortunes-by-conquest, but only fortunes-by-work, and instead of swordsmen and slaves, there appeared the real maker of wealth, the greatest worker, the highest type of human being—the self-made man—the American industrialist.

“If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose—because it contains all the others—the fact that they were the people who created the phrase ‘to MAKE money.’ No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity—to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted, or obtained as a favor. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created. The words ‘to make money’ hold the essence of human morality.

“Yet these were the words for which Americans were denounced by the rotted cultures of the looters’ continents. Now the looters’ credo has brought you to regard your proudest achievements as a hallmark of shame, your prosperity as guilt, your greatest men, the industrialists, as blackguards, and your magnificent factories as the product and property of muscular labor, the labor of whip-driven slaves, like the pyramids of Egypt. The rotter who simpers that he sees no difference between the power of the dollar and the power of the whip, ought to learn the difference on his own hide-as, I think, he will.

I am a white person, descendent of poor Confederate non-slave holders, whose ancestors came to North America in the 1600s as Bond Slaves resulting from British debtor’s prison. The whole reparations issue is just wrong. Slavery is past history and should stay that way. Reparations is nothing more than a liberal scheme for redistribution of wealth the Marxist way.

I know exactly what an indentured servant was. Most of the British prisons were full of Irish who’s only way out was through indentured servitude. Those indentured servants in the colonies were horribly treated and usually worked and starved to death and the women repeatedly raped. They were enslaved and treated worse that owned slaves, they were treated like rented mules who hardly ever lived to the end of their contract.

“...America owes Blacks $700 billion to $1.9 trillion for unpaid labor...”

How many mules would that buy?

Actually, it was the Muslim slave traders that were “allowed” (by the power of their swords) to set-up shop in Africa that started slavery. They sold to the colonial Europeans.

It is highly likely that such activity is part of Opossum’s heritage from his Kenyan-Muslim father.
